Ancient Mesopotamia
Introduction
Ancient Mesopotamia was a region in West Asia where some of the world's earliest large cities, writing systems, and states developed. The name Mesopotamia means "land between rivers." Much of the region lay between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, in an area that is mostly part of modern Iraq.
In this course, you will explore how rivers shaped farming, how cities grew, how people wrote on clay, how rulers organized kingdoms and empires, and what objects can tell us about everyday life. You will also practice reading maps, studying artifacts, comparing ideas, and explaining cause and effect.
By the end of the course, you should be able to:

- Describe early city-states and how they were organized.
- Explain cuneiform and why writing changed society.

Where Was Mesopotamia?
Mesopotamia was not one single country. It was a historical region with many cities, peoples, languages, and kingdoms over thousands of years. Its heartland lay around the Tigris and Euphrates river system. Southern Mesopotamia included places such as Ur, Uruk, and Babylon, while northern Mesopotamia included cities such as Assur and Nineveh.
Study the map below. Find the Tigris, the Euphrates, Babylon, Uruk, and Ur. Then compare their locations with the rivers.

The wider Fertile Crescent included Mesopotamia and other areas where farming communities developed early.

A map gives us clues, but it also has limits. Ancient borders changed often, coastlines were not exactly the same as today, and different maps may show different time periods.
Rivers, Farming, and Irrigation
The Tigris and Euphrates supplied water to dry land. Their floods could help farming, but floods could also be dangerous and unpredictable. People dug canals and built channels, banks, and other water-control works. This practice is called irrigation.
Irrigation could help farmers grow crops such as barley, wheat, dates, and vegetables. It also required cooperation. Canals had to be dug, cleared, and repaired. Communities needed rules about water use and labor. In this way, geography influenced both food production and organization.
Southern Mesopotamia had rich soil but fewer supplies of timber, stone, and metal than some neighboring regions. This encouraged long-distance trade. Merchants and communities exchanged food, textiles, crafted goods, and other products for materials they needed.

Cities and City-States
By the fourth millennium BCE, some Mesopotamian settlements had become large urban centers. Uruk was one of the most important early cities. In southern Mesopotamia, the Sumerians lived in city-states such as Uruk, Ur, Lagash, and others.
A city-state was a city and its surrounding land with its own government. City-states could cooperate, trade, or fight. They were not all ruled in exactly the same way throughout history.
Cities included homes, workshops, storage areas, streets, walls in some periods, and important religious buildings. Farmers worked outside and around cities, while people inside cities could have specialized jobs such as pottery making, metalworking, building, trading, or writing.

Ziggurats and Beliefs
Religion was closely connected with public life in many Mesopotamian cities. People worshipped many gods and goddesses. Different cities could have their own especially important deity. Religious beliefs changed over time and differed from place to place.
A ziggurat was a large stepped platform connected with a temple complex. It was not a tomb like an Egyptian pyramid. The Great Ziggurat of Ur was built in the early second millennium BCE during the rule of Ur-Nammu and his successors.

Look carefully at the photograph. Which parts appear ancient, and which parts may have been repaired or reconstructed? Archaeological sites often contain both original material and later restoration.
Writing: Cuneiform on Clay
One of Mesopotamia's most famous developments was cuneiform. Early writing in southern Mesopotamia appeared around the late fourth millennium BCE. Scribes pressed a reed stylus into soft clay, creating wedge-shaped marks. The word cuneiform refers to this wedge-shaped appearance.
Writing was used for many purposes: keeping accounts, recording deliveries, writing letters, recording laws, composing literature, and preserving school exercises. Not everyone could read and write. A trained writer was called a scribe.

Artifact detective task: Without translating the tablet, list three things you can observe about its material, shape, and marks. Then write one careful inference about how it might have been used. Label your statements either observation or inference.
Artifacts and Everyday Life
Archaeologists learn from buildings, tools, pottery, graves, seals, tablets, art, and food remains. A famous object from the Royal Cemetery at Ur is known as the Standard of Ur. It was made with materials including shell, red limestone, and lapis lazuli. Its scenes show people, animals, vehicles, goods, music, and social rank.

Artifacts are evidence, but they do not tell us everything by themselves. A scene may show an ideal, a ceremony, or a special event rather than ordinary daily life. Historians compare many kinds of evidence before making a conclusion.
Cylinder seals were small carved objects that could be rolled across wet clay to leave a picture or design. They could help mark ownership, identity, or authorization.

Kingdoms and Empires
Mesopotamian political history included many city-states, kingdoms, and empires. Control changed again and again.
Around the twenty-fourth century BCE, Sargon of Akkad built the Akkadian Empire, which brought many Mesopotamian cities under one ruler. Later, other states became powerful.
Babylon became an important center. King Hammurabi, who ruled in the eighteenth century BCE, is especially famous for a large written collection of laws. The laws cover topics such as property, trade, family matters, wages, injuries, and responsibilities. Punishments were not equal for every person, because Mesopotamian society was divided by social status.

In northern Mesopotamia, Assyria became a major power. Much later, the Neo-Assyrian Empire controlled a large area of the ancient Near East. After its fall, the Neo-Babylonian Empire became powerful, with Babylon again as a major capital.
Important idea: "Mesopotamia" covers a very long history. Sumerians, Akkadians, Babylonians, and Assyrians did not all live at the same time or follow identical customs.
Mathematics, Time, and Knowledge
Mesopotamian scholars developed advanced methods for calculation and measurement. Babylonian mathematics often used a base-60 number system. Later mathematical traditions helped preserve the use of 60 in time measurement and 360 degrees in a full circle.
Mesopotamian scholars also recorded observations of the sky. Over many centuries, they gathered careful information about the movements of the Moon, planets, and stars. Their goals were connected with calendars, scholarship, religion, and prediction.
This does not mean that every modern idea came directly from Mesopotamia. Historical knowledge usually grows through many cultures, exchanges, and later developments.

Dates in ancient history are often approximate. Different scholarly chronologies can vary, especially for early periods.
