Introduction
Academic writing is writing produced in higher education and scholarly contexts to develop, test, communicate, and evaluate knowledge. It includes essays, research papers, laboratory reports, literature reviews, case analyses, theses, dissertations, and journal articles. Although conventions differ across disciplines and genres, strong academic writing usually makes its purpose clear, develops a defensible line of reasoning, uses appropriate evidence, acknowledges sources, and helps readers follow how claims are connected.
You should not think of academic writing as a single rigid style. A historian, an engineer, a literary scholar, and a psychologist may organize evidence differently because they belong to different discourse communities. Your task is therefore both intellectual and rhetorical: you need to understand the problem, the evidence, the disciplinary expectations, the intended audience, and the genre.

The image above illustrates one possible structure for a social-science research article. It is useful as a model, but it is not a universal template. In many empirical fields, research articles commonly use forms related to IMRaD: introduction, methods, results, and discussion. Humanities essays and theoretical papers often organize their arguments differently.
This aiMOOC is designed for university students. It treats writing as a process of inquiry rather than a final act of transcription. You will practice moving from a task and research question to an argument, integrating and evaluating sources, building coherent paragraphs and sections, revising strategically, and documenting your work with academic integrity.
Learning Objectives

Understanding the Writing Situation
Purpose, Audience, Genre, and Discipline
Before drafting, identify the rhetorical situation. Ask what the assignment requires you to do, who will read the text, what kind of text is expected, and what standards count as convincing in the discipline. Words such as analyze, evaluate, compare, interpret, argue, and discuss signal different intellectual operations.
A useful first move is to rewrite the task in your own words. Identify the central problem, constraints such as word count and required sources, the expected citation style, and the criteria in the marking rubric. Then decide what the reader must understand or accept by the end of your text.

Bloom's revised taxonomy is not a writing formula, but it can help you recognize cognitive demand. University tasks often move beyond remembering and understanding toward applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating. Academic writing makes these higher-order processes visible through explanations, comparisons, interpretations, judgments, and original syntheses.
From Topic to Research Question
A broad topic is not yet a research problem. For example, social media is a field of interest, while a question such as How does short-form video use affect the study routines of first-year university students? is more focused. A useful research question is sufficiently narrow for the available time and word count, answerable with appropriate evidence, and open enough to require analysis rather than a one-word answer.
You can narrow a topic by specifying a population, context, period, concept, mechanism, text, theory, case, or comparison. In a literature-based paper, the question may ask how scholars explain a phenomenon. In an empirical project, it may guide data collection. In a humanities essay, it may focus interpretation of a text, event, archive, artwork, or concept.
Building an Academic Argument
Thesis, Claim, Evidence, and Warrant
A thesis statement expresses the central claim or controlling idea of a paper. It should match the task, be arguable where argument is required, and be appropriately limited. A working thesis is provisional: as you research and draft, you may need to refine or replace it.
A strong academic argument contains more than claims. It connects claims to evidence through reasoning. One useful model distinguishes:
- Claim: What you want the reader to accept.
- Evidence: The data, examples, texts, observations, or scholarship that support the claim.
- Warrant: The reasoning that explains why the evidence supports the claim.
- Counterargument: A plausible alternative interpretation, limitation, or objection that your argument should consider when relevant.

Argument maps make relationships visible. When planning, try writing your main claim in one box, major reasons below it, and evidence beneath each reason. Add objections and limitations. If an important reason has no credible evidence, you have identified a research problem rather than a finished paragraph.
Strong Claims and Appropriate Caution
Academic claims should be proportional to the evidence. Avoid turning a limited study into a universal conclusion. A claim about one sample, text, historical case, or dataset should not automatically be generalized to all populations or situations.
Writers often use hedging to express appropriate degrees of certainty. Verbs and phrases such as suggests, indicates, is consistent with, may, and under these conditions can make a claim more precise. Hedging is not simply weak language; used well, it shows that you understand the scope and limits of evidence. Conversely, when evidence is strong, excessive hedging can make a sound conclusion unnecessarily vague.
Research, Reading, and Source Evaluation
Finding Scholarly Sources
Academic writing is intertextual: it responds to, uses, and transforms existing knowledge. Start by identifying keywords and synonyms from your research question. Use your university library catalogue, subject databases, citation indexes, and scholarly search tools. Reference lists in relevant sources can help you move backward to earlier work, while citation tracking can help you find later work.
Do not judge a source only by whether it agrees with your position. Evaluate relevance, authority, method, evidence, publication context, date where currency matters, and possible limitations. A peer-reviewed article can still contain weaknesses, and a non-peer-reviewed source can still be useful for particular purposes such as official statistics, policy documents, primary sources, or current organizational information.
Reading Analytically
Reading for academic writing is purposeful. Before taking detailed notes, identify the source's research question, central claim, theoretical framework, method, evidence, findings, and limitations. Then ask how the source relates to your own question.
Separate three kinds of notes: what the source says, your interpretation of it, and ideas about how you may use it. Record full bibliographic information and page numbers while reading. This saves time and reduces citation errors later.
From Summary to Synthesis
A summary condenses one source. Synthesis connects multiple sources around a question, theme, method, finding, or debate. A literature review should therefore do more than present one source per paragraph. It should show relationships: agreement, disagreement, development, methodological difference, theoretical contrast, or an unresolved gap.
A synthesis matrix can help. Put themes or analytical questions in rows and sources in columns. Fill each cell with concise notes. Patterns become easier to see, and your eventual paragraphs can be organized around ideas rather than around individual authors.
Organizing a Paper
Macrostructure
Readers need a visible line of reasoning. Before drafting, create a provisional outline that gives each section a clear function. In an argumentative essay, a common sequence is introduction, context or conceptual framing, major analytical sections, consideration of alternatives or limitations, and conclusion. In empirical research, a disciplinary version of IMRaD may be expected. In a literature review, thematic, methodological, chronological, or theoretical organization may be more useful.
An introduction typically establishes the problem, explains why it matters in the context of the assignment or field, defines necessary scope or terms, and presents the paper's direction. A conclusion should do more than repeat the introduction: it should synthesize what the analysis has established, clarify implications, and, when appropriate, identify limitations or further questions.
Paragraph Structure and Flow
A paragraph should normally develop one main function within the larger argument. A topic sentence often signals that function, but not every discipline or genre uses topic sentences in exactly the same way. What matters is that the paragraph has unity and that readers can understand why each sentence is there.
A useful diagnostic model is point, evidence, analysis, connection. First state or establish the paragraph's point. Then provide relevant evidence. Next, explain the evidence instead of assuming it speaks for itself. Finally, connect the paragraph to the larger claim, next step, or section. You may need several pieces of evidence and several sentences of analysis; the model is a reasoning pattern, not a fixed sentence count.
Cohesion is created when sentences connect clearly. Use repeated key terms where repetition aids precision, controlled use of pronouns, logical transitions, parallel structures, and known-to-new information flow. Avoid adding transition words mechanically. A word such as however cannot create a contrast unless the ideas really contrast.
Reverse Outlining
A reverse outline is made after a draft exists. Write one short note beside each paragraph stating what that paragraph actually does. Then read only those notes. If the sequence does not form a logical argument, revise the structure. Reverse outlining is especially useful when a draft contains good material but feels repetitive, fragmented, or unfocused.
Academic Style and Clarity
Formality Without Artificial Complexity
Academic writing is often formal, but formality should not be confused with unnecessary complexity. Prefer precise verbs, concrete nouns, and sentences whose grammatical structure makes the relationships between ideas clear. Long words do not automatically make writing more academic.
Use discipline-appropriate terminology when it adds precision. Define specialized terms that your intended reader may not know. Avoid conversational fillers and unsupported intensifiers such as obviously, everyone knows, or completely proves. Such expressions often hide missing evidence.
Voice, Agency, and the First Person
Rules about first person vary. Some disciplines accept or encourage I argue or we measured; others prefer impersonal or passive constructions in particular sections. Do not remove the human agent when agency matters. Compare Mistakes were made in coding with We identified and corrected three coding errors. The second version may be more transparent.
Choose active or passive voice based on rhetorical purpose, not a blanket rule. Active voice can make responsibility and action clear. Passive voice can be useful when the process or object is more important than the actor, or when disciplinary convention supports it.
Concision and Precision
Revision often improves a paper by removing words that do not change meaning. Replace vague expressions with precise ones. For example, a large number of participants may be less useful than the actual number when the number matters. Replace strings of abstract nouns with verbs when possible. Compare the implementation of an evaluation of the program was conducted with the team evaluated the program.
Precision also includes defining the scope of claims, distinguishing correlation from causation, and using numbers, terms, and categories consistently.
Using Sources Ethically and Effectively
Quotation, Paraphrase, and Summary
A quotation reproduces exact wording and must be marked and cited according to the required style. A paraphrase restates a specific idea in genuinely new language and structure while preserving the meaning; it still requires citation. A summary condenses a larger body of material; it also requires citation when the ideas come from a source.
Good source integration has three stages: introduce the source or idea when necessary, present the borrowed material accurately, and explain how it contributes to your argument. Avoid dropping quotations into a paragraph without analysis.
Do not paraphrase by replacing a few words with synonyms while keeping the original sentence structure. Read for meaning, set the source aside, explain the idea in your own conceptual structure, compare your version with the original for accuracy and excessive similarity, and cite the source.
Citation and Referencing
Citation systems such as APA, MLA, Chicago, and IEEE differ in formatting and disciplinary use. Their shared academic function is to distinguish your contribution from borrowed material and to help readers locate sources.
You should cite direct quotations, paraphrases, summaries, distinctive ideas, data, images, and other source-dependent material unless the information is common knowledge in the relevant context. Follow the style required by your course, department, journal, or instructor. Consistency matters, but correct source use is more important than decorative formatting.
Academic Integrity and Responsible Use of AI
Academic integrity requires honest representation of authorship, evidence, methods, and sources. Plagiarism includes presenting another person's language or ideas as your own. Other integrity problems can include fabricated references, invented data, unauthorized collaboration, or misrepresentation of how work was produced.
If you use generative AI or other automated writing tools, follow the rules of your institution, course, supervisor, publisher, and discipline. Permitted use may differ across contexts. When disclosure or citation is required, provide it. Verify claims and references independently because generated output can contain errors or nonexistent sources. Do not upload confidential, personal, unpublished, or restricted material to a tool unless you have permission and the data handling is appropriate. Most importantly, you remain responsible for the accuracy, reasoning, evidence, and final wording of work you submit.
Literature Reviews and Scholarly Conversation
A literature review maps a body of scholarship in relation to a focused question. It may be a stand-alone assignment or part of a larger research project. Its purpose is not merely to prove that you have read many sources. It should show what is known, how knowledge has been produced, where scholars agree or disagree, what limitations exist, and how your own project is positioned.

Open-access scholarship can broaden access to research, but access status is not itself a guarantee of quality. Evaluate the source, method, argument, evidence, and publication context.
When writing a literature review, organize around analytical categories rather than a list of authors. For example, one section might compare two methodological approaches, another might examine a recurring theoretical disagreement, and a third might identify a gap. Use synthesis sentences that bring several sources into relation with one another.
Revision, Feedback, and Editing
Revision as Re-Thinking
Revision addresses the meaning and architecture of a draft. Ask whether the thesis still matches the evidence, whether major sections appear in the best order, whether counterevidence has been treated fairly, whether key concepts are defined, and whether each paragraph advances the argument.
Editing is more local. It improves sentence clarity, wording, grammar, punctuation, and consistency. Proofreading is the final quality-control stage for surface errors, formatting, references, captions, headings, and submission requirements. Doing these tasks in separate passes is usually more effective than trying to solve every problem at once.

Peer Review
Useful peer feedback is specific, evidence-based, and connected to the writer's purpose. Instead of saying This is confusing, identify where your understanding changed and what question you had as a reader. Instead of rewriting the paper in your own style, explain the effect of the current draft and suggest options.
As a writer, treat feedback as data about readers. You do not need to accept every suggestion. Look for patterns across comments, compare feedback with the assignment criteria, and decide what revision will best serve the paper's purpose.
A Practical University Writing Workflow
A flexible workflow can reduce last-minute writing and make revision possible.
- Assignment analysis: Translate the prompt and rubric into concrete requirements.
- Research question: Define a focused problem that can be addressed within the assignment.
- Source evaluation: Find, assess, and record useful evidence.
- Argument mapping: Develop a provisional thesis, reasons, evidence, and possible objections.
- Outline: Give each section and paragraph a purpose.
- Drafting: Write for meaning before polishing every sentence.
- Reverse outline: Check what the draft actually does and reorganize where needed.
- Peer review: Gather reader feedback and identify revision priorities.
- Revision: Improve argument, evidence, organization, and explanation.

Because writing is recursive, you may move backward as well as forward. A new source can change your thesis; revision can reveal the need for more research; proofreading can uncover an inconsistent term that points to a conceptual problem.

A strong portfolio should show process as well as final performance. Drafts, feedback, source notes, revision decisions, and reflective commentary can demonstrate how your reasoning developed. The final text alone may show quality, but process evidence can show how deliberately you reached that quality.
