E9 G - Understand travel information in English
E9 G - Understand travel information in English

Einleitung
Travel information is everywhere: on a departure board, a ticket, a map, a hostel page or at a visitor information point. In this aiMOOC lernst Du, die wichtigsten Informationen schnell zu finden und passend auf Englisch zu reagieren.
Dein Lernweg: English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again.
Du musst nicht jedes Wort verstehen. Suche zuerst nach time, place, price, platform, direction, rules und important changes.
Medien-Einstieg
Look at the board for 20 seconds. Do not translate every word.

- Quick look: What kind of information can you expect?
- Key words: Say five English words that may appear on such a board.
- Strategy: Which information would you check first if your train or flight leaves soon?
I-can-Ziele
Nach dem Kurs kannst Du sagen:
- I can listen for key travel information in clear, moderate English.
- I can read simple timetables, tickets, maps and accommodation information.
- I can ask short follow-up questions when information is missing.
- I can write a short, clear travel message or email.
- I can explain the most important travel information to another person without translating everything.
Vorwissen aktivieren
Think first, then compare with a partner.
- Places: station, airport, hostel, hotel, bus stop, visitor centre.
- Questions: Where? When? How much? Which platform? How long?
- Numbers: Practise times such as 8:15, 12:40 and 17:05.
Mini rule: First understand the situation. Then look for details.
Listening and Viewing
First listening/viewing: Watch a short part without using a transcript. What is the place? Who is speaking? Write down three words you understand.
Second listening/viewing: Watch again. Now focus on one purpose: buying a ticket, finding a platform or asking for help. Captions may be used after the first attempt.
Third round: Pause after one short useful sentence. Repeat it once or twice. Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit.
Respond: Choose one situation from the video and say a short answer such as: “Platform six, thank you.” or “So the train is delayed?”
Listening strategy
Listen for signal words: numbers, times, place names, platform numbers, prices and words such as delayed, cancelled, change, direct, single, return.
If you miss something, do not stop. Listen for the next key word.
Reading travel information
A simple departure board
Fictional practice board
| Time | Destination | Platform | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 09:10 | Westport | 3 | On time |
| 09:25 | Hillford | 5 | Delayed 10 min |
| 09:40 | Lake City | 2 | Platform change: 4 |
Answer in short English.
- Westport: When does the train leave?
- Hillford: Is the train on time?
- Lake City: Which platform do you need now?
A map

Use the map as a reading practice medium. Do not try to learn all stations. Find lines, station names and connections. For real journeys, always check current official travel information.
Task: Point to two stations and explain a possible connection with simple language: “Start at … Change at … Then take …”
A ticket
Fictional practice ticket
| TRAVEL TICKET | Information |
|---|---|
| From | Oakford |
| To | Westport |
| Date | 14 June |
| Departure | 10:32 |
| Coach | B |
| Seat | 24A |
| Type | Single |
| Note | Valid only on the booked train |
Understand: Where do you start? Where do you go? What time is the train? Which seat is yours? Can you use a later train with this ticket?
Accommodation information

Green Bridge Hostel – fictional practice text
Green Bridge Hostel is eight minutes on foot from Oakford Station. A twin room is £58 per night. Wi-Fi is free. Breakfast costs £6. Check-in is from 3 pm to 10 pm. There is no lift. The reception desk is open from 7 am to 11 pm.
Find five facts: distance, room price, breakfast price, check-in time and one important facility.
Visitor information

Harbour Visitor Centre – fictional practice information
Open: 9:30 am–5 pm Walking tour: 2 pm Tour length: 60 minutes Student ticket: £5 Meeting point: outside the visitor centre Booking: recommended at weekends
Your decision: You arrive at 1:35 pm. Can you join the tour? What information would you still like to ask for?
Kontextwortschatz
Learn words in a situation, not as a long translation list.
| Word or phrase | Simple English clue | Use it |
|---|---|---|
| departure | when a bus, train or flight leaves | What is the departure time? |
| arrival | when it reaches a place | What time is the arrival? |
| platform | where you wait for a train | Which platform is it? |
| delayed | later than planned | The train is delayed. |
| single | one-way ticket | A single to Westport, please. |
| return | ticket there and back | How much is a return? |
| available | free to book or use | Is a room available? |
| reception | help desk in a hotel or hostel | Ask at reception. |
| entrance | place where you go in | Where is the entrance? |
| change | move to another train or bus | Do I need to change? |
Aussprache und Fluency
Practise useful chunks, not single sounds only:
Which platform? – stress the key word. What time does it leave? – keep a steady rhythm. Could you say that again, please? – speak clearly, not too fast. Is breakfast included? – connect the phrase smoothly.
Do a private 20-second recording only if you want to. Listen once and improve one point. No upload is needed.
Speaking
Use a short part of the video for a hotel or hostel situation. First watch for meaning. Then practise your own version.
Role A – traveller: You need a room, breakfast information and the check-in time.
Role B – receptionist: Give short information. One detail is missing, so the traveller must ask again.
Useful language: “Is a room available?” – “How much is it?” – “What time is check-in?” – “Could you say that again, please?”
Writing
Write a short travel message of about 60–90 words.
Situation: Your train is delayed and you will arrive at the hostel later than planned.
Include: your name, new arrival time, one question and a polite ending.
Writing frame:
Hello, My train is delayed. I now expect to arrive at … Is it possible to …? Thank you for your help. Best wishes, …
Mediation
A German-speaking friend asks: „Wann fährt der Zug, von welchem Gleis und gibt es eine Verspätung?“
Look at the fictional departure board above. Give the needed information in simple spoken English. Do not translate every line. Select only what the person needs.
Then switch roles: Your partner gives you one new travel detail in German. You pass on the key information in English.
Functional grammar
Use grammar to solve communication problems.
| Function | Useful pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ask for a place | Where is …? | Where is platform 4? |
| ask about time | What time does … leave? | What time does the bus leave? |
| ask about possibility | Can I …? | Can I check in after 10 pm? |
| polite question | Could you …, please? | Could you repeat that, please? |
| location | at / on / from / to | at the station; on platform 3; from Oakford to Westport |
Accuracy focus: Keep the word order in questions: question word + helping verb + person/thing + main verb. Communication comes first; improve these few patterns step by step.
Hilfestufen
| Level | Help |
|---|---|
| Hint 1 | Look for time, place, price, platform and status. |
| Hint 2 | Use a starter: “Where is …?”, “What time …?”, “How much …?” |
| Hint 3 | Use a model and change one detail: “What time does the train leave?” |
Start with as little help as possible. Use the next hint only when you need it.
Feedback und Fehleranalyse
After a task, use this short check:
- Meaning: Did the other person understand me?
- Information: Did I give the key fact?
- Question: Did I ask when something was missing?
- Improve: Choose one language point to improve.
Common corrections:
| Try | Improve |
|---|---|
| Where I can buy a ticket? | Where can I buy a ticket? |
| What time the train leaves? | What time does the train leave? |
| I wait in platform 4. | I wait on platform 4. |
Keep your own text. If a digital or AI tool gives feedback, check facts, sources and suggestions before you use them. Do not replace your own work automatically. Do not upload private recordings or personal data without a clear reason and permission.
Transfer

Imagine you arrive in an unfamiliar English-speaking city. You have only a ticket, a map and a short accommodation note.
Challenge: Find the three facts you need first. Then ask one useful follow-up question. Finally explain your plan in 30–45 seconds.
Avoid cultural stereotypes. Travel information can look different in different places, but your reading strategies still help.
Can-do-Check
Mark each statement with yes, almost or not yet.
| I can … | yes / almost / not yet |
|---|---|
| find times, prices and places in short travel texts | |
| understand the main point of clear travel announcements or dialogues | |
| ask for missing information | |
| use a few polite travel questions correctly | |
| explain key information without translating everything | |
| write a short structured travel message |
If you mark almost or not yet, repeat one earlier task with a hint. Then try a new example.
