E9 G - Mediate work and travel information
E9 G - Mediate work and travel information
Mini description: You pass on the key information from a short work, travel or event situation. You do not translate everything. You choose what the other person really needs.
Du trainierst Mediation im Alltag und in der Berufswelt: verstehen, auswählen, weitergeben, nachfragen und verbessern. Der Kurs ist für Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Klasse 9, Baden-Württemberg, G-Niveau angelegt.
Course routine: English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again.
Alle Personen, Betriebe, Kontaktdaten und Situationen in den Aufgaben sind fiktiv. Nutze keine privaten Social-Media-Daten.

Media start
Look at the picture. Say three English words you connect with work and travel. Then answer:
- Key information: What can be important before a trip or a first work shift?
- Mediation: Which information would a friend really need?
- Questions: What would you ask if something is unclear?

Quick task: Do not read every detail. Find only three kinds of information: time – destination – platform.
I can
| I can ... | Check |
|---|---|
| find key information in a short work or travel message. | □ |
| pass on important information for one person. | □ |
| ask a simple follow-up question when information is missing. | □ |
| write a short, clear message with time, place and action. | □ |
| improve my message after feedback. | □ |
What you already know
60-second warm-up: Complete the English phrases orally.
| Situation | Start |
|---|---|
| You need a time. | What time ...? |
| You need a place. | Where ...? |
| You did not understand. | Could you repeat ...? |
| You need to know what to bring. | Do I need to bring ...? |
| You want to check information. | So, I need to ...? |
Hint: First try without help. Then look at the sentence starts.
Understand: Listening and Viewing
Before watching: The video is about a workplace situation. Predict three words you may hear.
First viewing: Watch only a short section chosen by your teacher. Do not use a transcript yet. Listen for:
| Listen for | Your note |
|---|---|
| Who is speaking? | ... |
| What is the situation? | ... |
| What is the next step? | ... |
Second viewing: Check your notes. Only after this attempt, use subtitles or a transcript if needed.
G-level focus: You do not need every word. Catch the main point and easy-to-find details.
Travel viewing
Watch a short teacher-selected part. Write down only words you understand. Sort them into place – transport – action.
Do not stop at every unknown word. Use the picture, situation and familiar words.
Understand: Reading
Fictional shift note
Green Harbour Café – Saturday helper
Your shift starts at 10:00. Please arrive at 9:45 and use the side entrance. Wear black trousers and closed shoes. Lunch is free. Bus 7 is delayed this Saturday. From Brighton Station, take bus 12 to Market Street. If you are late, tell the shift leader when you arrive.
Your reader: Sam speaks German and asks only:
Wann muss ich da sein? Wie komme ich hin? Was soll ich anziehen?
Task: Mark only the information Sam needs. Do not translate the complete text.

Respond: Mediate the key information
Use this simple strategy:
| Step | What you do | Helpful question |
|---|---|---|
| Need | Think about the person. | What does Sam need? |
| Pick | Choose the useful details. | Which time, place or action matters? |
| Pass on | Give the information clearly. | Can Sam act after my message? |
Possible mediation: Sam muss um 9:45 Uhr da sein und den Seiteneingang nehmen. Von Brighton Station fährt er mit Bus 12 bis Market Street. Er braucht eine schwarze Hose und geschlossene Schuhe.
This is a mediation, not a full translation.
One more situation: event volunteering
Fictional event card
Seafront Skills Day – Volunteer Info
Check in at 8:30 at the blue welcome desk. The team briefing starts at 8:45. The event opens at 10:00. Bring a water bottle. You get a staff badge at check-in. Do not take photos of visitors without permission.
Your reader: Lea asks: Wann soll ich da sein, wo muss ich hin und was soll ich mitbringen?
Task: Give Lea only these three points in German.
Ask: When information is missing
Sometimes the source does not answer the reader's question. Then ask.
| Need | Useful English |
|---|---|
| repeat | Could you repeat that, please? |
| time | What time do I need to arrive? |
| place | Where is the meeting point? |
| clothes | Do I need to wear anything special? |
| food | Do I need to bring lunch? |
| check | So, I should take bus 12, right? |
Mini-dialogue
A: The meeting point has changed.
B: Could you repeat the new place, please?
A: Yes. Meet at the blue welcome desk.
B: So, the blue welcome desk. Thanks.
Hint: Context vocabulary
Learn words in useful chunks, not as isolated lists.
| English | Simple meaning | Useful chunk |
|---|---|---|
| shift | Arbeitszeit / Schicht | start a shift |
| entrance | Eingang | use the side entrance |
| delayed | verspätet | the bus is delayed |
| platform | Bahnsteig / Gleis | platform four |
| change | umsteigen / ändern | change buses |
| arrive | ankommen | arrive at 9:45 |
| staff | Mitarbeitende | staff entrance |
| briefing | kurze Einweisung | team briefing |
| available | verfügbar | Is lunch available? |
| permission | Erlaubnis | ask for permission |

Picture task: Imagine this is a workplace reception. Use four vocabulary chunks to explain what a new helper may need to know.
Pronunciation and Fluency
Goal: understandable English, not accent-free English.
Speak in short chunks:
Please arrive / at nine forty-five / at the side entrance.
Stress the useful information: time, place, action.
For questions, keep the word order clear:
Where is the meeting point?
What time do I need to arrive?
Fluency practice: Read one sentence once slowly, once naturally, then say it without looking. Recording yourself is optional. Keep recordings private unless you actively choose to share them.
Speaking

Pair task: Work information
Student A is a new helper. Student B has the shift note.
A asks: What time do I start? Where do I go? What do I need to wear?
B answers with short, clear information.
Then change roles.
Mediation round: A German-speaking friend asks one question. The mediator reads the English note and gives only the needed information in German.
Writing
Write a short message of about 50–70 words.
Situation: Your German friend wants to know the important details for the first shift at Green Harbour Café.
Use this structure:
| Part | Sentence starter |
|---|---|
| Start | Hi ..., here are the important details. |
| Time | You need to be there at ... |
| Travel | From the station, ... |
| Clothes | Please wear ... |
| End | Let me know if you need more information. |
Important: Keep your own text. Feedback should help you improve it, not replace it.
Functional grammar
Communication comes first. Focus on only a few useful points.
| Function | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| obligation | need to / have to | You need to arrive at 9:45. |
| polite question | Could you ...? | Could you repeat that, please? |
| reason | because | Take bus 12 because bus 7 is delayed. |
| result | so | Bus 7 is delayed, so take bus 12. |
| time | at | The briefing starts at 8:45. |
Accuracy focus: check question word order, time expressions and need to / have to.
Improve: Help levels
Use only as much help as you need.
| Level | Help |
|---|---|
| Help 1 | Mark time, place and action in the source. |
| Help 2 | Use sentence starters: The important point is ... / You need to ... / From the station ... |
| Help 3 | Compare your answer with a short model after your own first attempt. |
Rule: Try first. Get a hint. Improve. Use the skill again in a new situation.
Feedback
Give feedback on three things:
| Check | Question |
|---|---|
| Need | Did the answer fit the reader's question? |
| Clear | Are time, place and action easy to understand? |
| Language | Are the key sentences understandable? |
Useful feedback:
You included the right time.
The travel information is clear.
Add the meeting place.
Check the question order.
Avoid comments about having a “perfect accent”. Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger.
Error analysis
Read this mediation:
Sam muss um 10:00 Uhr da sein. Er soll Bus 7 nehmen. Außerdem ist das Mittagessen kostenlos und das Café hat einen Seiteneingang.
Find the problems.
Check:
- Time: Is the arrival time correct?
- Transport: Is the correct bus given?
- Information need: Is all included information useful for Sam's question?
- Missing information: Is the clothing information there?
Improve it: Write a clearer version in two or three sentences.
Use again: Transfer

New fictional message
City Media Workshop: Meet at 13:20 in Room B4. The workshop starts at 13:30. Bring headphones and a notebook. The café downstairs is closed today. You can buy drinks at the station shop. The workshop ends at 16:00.
Recipient A asks: Wann und wo muss ich da sein?
Recipient B asks: Was muss ich mitbringen?
Recipient C asks: Wo bekomme ich etwas zu trinken?
Give three different short answers. Notice: the same source creates different mediation because the recipients need different information.
Workplace video challenge
Watch a short selected section. Do not try to understand everything.
Task: Note one question the employee asks and one piece of information that matters before starting a job.
Then tell a partner the key point in simple English.
Safe media and AI use
- Fictional data: Use invented names, workplaces, addresses and application details in school tasks.
- Privacy: Do not copy private social-media information into tasks.
- Recording: Audio or video recording is voluntary. Keep it private unless you choose otherwise.
- Uploads: Do not upload classmates' texts, voices, pictures or personal data without clear permission.
- AI tools: Do not send school texts or personal data to an external AI service unless this is explicitly allowed.
- Fact checking: Check AI facts, sources and feedback. Keep your own text and make your own final decisions.
- Culture: Describe people and places from evidence. Avoid culture stereotypes.
Can-do check
| Can I ...? | Not yet | With help | Yes |
|---|---|---|---|
| find the important information in a short English message? | □ | □ | □ |
| leave out information the reader does not need? | □ | □ | □ |
| pass on time, place and action clearly? | □ | □ | □ |
| ask when something is missing? | □ | □ | □ |
| improve my message after feedback? | □ | □ | □ |
If you tick with help, use one help level and repeat the transfer task.
Follow-up course
Continue with E9 G - Ask and clarify workplace information. Reuse the same routine: understand → respond → ask → improve → use again.

- Feedback revision: Exchange short mediation texts, give feedback with Need–Clear–Language and revise your own text.
Schwer
- Two recipients: Use one English source but create two different mediation answers for two people with different questions.
- Information gap: Create a dialogue in which one important detail is missing. The learner must notice the gap and ask the correct follow-up question.
- Media task: Choose a freely licensed travel or workplace image and design a short viewing task that focuses on key information rather than decoration.
- Transfer project: Build a one-page fictional “first day abroad” information sheet with workplace, travel and event details. A partner chooses only the information needed for a new recipient.

Lernkontrolle
- Recipient focus: Read one short English work message and explain which three details are relevant for a given German-speaking recipient and which detail can be left out.
- Mediation transfer: Mediate a new travel update without translating the complete text. Explain why your answer fits the recipient's question.
- Clarification strategy: In a role play, notice one missing detail and ask a suitable English follow-up question.
- Error repair: Correct a mediation that contains one wrong time, one wrong travel detail and one unnecessary detail.
- Audience change: Use the same source for two different recipients and show how the mediation changes.
- Communication quality: Revise a short answer so that time, place and action are easier to understand without making the text much longer.
