E9 G - Give your opinion and two reasons

Einleitung

Your goal: Say what you think. Give two clear reasons. Ask one simple follow-up question.

Look at the speech bubbles. Think of a familiar topic: phones at school, homework, free time, sport, music or school trips.

Quick start: Choose one topic and finish this sentence aloud: I think ... because ...

Du arbeitest in kurzen Schritten: understand → respond → ask → get a hint → improve → use it again. Die wichtigsten Redemittel stehen zuerst auf Englisch. Deutsche Hilfen erklären nur das Nötigste.

I can ...

Am Ende kann ich ... Check
I can give a clear opinion. ☐
I can give two simple reasons. ☐
I can ask a follow-up question. ☐
I can react politely to another opinion. ☐
I can write a short opinion text. ☐

Vorwissen aktivieren

Say one sentence for each starter:

Starter Your idea
I like ... ...
I don't like ... ...
I think ... ...
My reason is ... ...

Mini-check: Can you already add because?

Your simple opinion pattern

Use this short pattern:

Step English Hint
Opinion I think ... Sag klar, was du denkst.
Reason 1 First, ... because ... Nenne einen einfachen Grund.
Reason 2 Also, ... because ... Nenne einen zweiten Grund.
Example For example, ... Ein Beispiel ist optional.

Model: I think school trips are important. First, we learn outside the classroom. Also, we spend time together. For example, we can learn about a city by visiting it.

Keep it short. Clear ideas are more important than difficult words.

Medien-Einstieg: Phones at school

Look first. Do not read a long text.

What can you see? What might the rule be? Give one opinion:

I think phones should / should not ... because ...

There is no single correct opinion. Your reasons must fit your opinion.

Listening and Viewing

First viewing: no transcript, no full translation. Listen for the main idea.

Listen for Your note
one phrase for an opinion ...
one phrase for a reason ...
one phrase you want to use ...

Second viewing: Watch again. Pause or replay short parts if needed. If the speed is difficult, reduce playback speed. Only after two listening attempts may you use subtitles or a transcript as support.

Respond: Say one new sentence with a phrase you noticed.

Listen again: polite reactions

Before watching, predict: Which phrase sounds more polite?

No. You are wrong. or I see your point, but ...

After watching, use one polite reaction in a mini-dialogue.

A: I think homework is useful.
B: I see your point, but I think we sometimes get too much.
A: Why?
B: Because we also need time to rest.

Reading: two short opinions

The profiles below are fictional.

Leah, 14: I think phones should stay in bags during lessons. First, I can focus better. Also, people talk more when they do not look at their phones all the time.

Sam, 15: I think phones can be useful in class. First, we can check a word quickly. Also, we can use them for a learning task when the teacher says it is OK.

Answer in short English:

  1. Main idea: What does Leah think?
  2. Reason check: Name one of Sam's reasons.
  3. Your response: Who do you agree with more? Give one reason.

Kontextwortschatz

Function Useful English
opinion I think ... / In my opinion, ...
reason because ... / My reason is ...
second reason Also, ... / Another reason is ...
example For example, ...
agree I agree. / That's true.
disagree politely I see your point, but ... / I don't agree because ...
ask Why? / What do you think?
clarify Can you say that again? / What do you mean?

Choose four phrases. Say them aloud twice. Then use them without looking.

Aussprache und Fluency

You do not need a perfect accent. You need to be easy to understand.

Speak in short chunks:

I THINK phones are USEful / because they HELP me LEARN.

FIRST, it is EASY. / ALSO, it saves TIME.

Practice this cycle:

  1. Slow speaking: Say the sentence slowly and clearly.
  2. Chunking: Pause after the opinion and after each reason.
  3. Stress: Stress the important words.
  4. Second try: Say it again a little more smoothly.

Optional recordings stay private. Record yourself only if you want to. Do not upload a recording unless you have clearly chosen to do so.

Speaking: 30–45 seconds

Choose one topic:

Topic Start
phones at school I think phones ...
homework I think homework ...
school trips I think school trips ...
sport after school I think sport ...
music while studying I think music ...

Speak for about 30–45 seconds.

Use this order:

Opinion → reason 1 → reason 2 → optional example

Your partner listens and asks one question:

Why? / Can you give an example? / What do you mean?

Then switch roles.

Hilfestufen

Level Help
Help 1 I think ___. First, ___ because ___. Also, ___ because ___.
Help 2 opinion → first reason → also → example
Help 3 Use only three note words. Speak freely.

Start with the help you need. On your second try, use one level less.

Functional grammar

Focus on only a few useful forms.

1. Opinion + sentence
I think school trips are useful.

2. Reason with because
I like group work because we can help each other.

3. Add a second point
Also, it can be fun.

4. Contrast
I like phones, but we need clear rules.

Remember: after because, use a subject and a verb.

Correct: because it helps me.
Not yet: because helps me.

Error analysis

Improve these short sentences. Keep the original idea.

First try Better version Why?
I think phones useful. I think phones are useful. The sentence needs a verb.
I like it because helps me. I like it because it helps me. After because, use subject + verb.
I think homework good because learn more. I think homework is good because I learn more. Add the missing verbs and subject.
I agree because same opinion. I agree because I have the same opinion. Make the reason a full short sentence.

Do not replace your whole text. Mark one problem, improve it, and keep your own wording.

Writing

Write 60–80 words about one familiar topic.

Use this frame if needed:

Hi ...,
I think ... .
First, ... because ... .
Also, ... because ... .
For example, ... .
What do you think?
Best, ...

Use a fictional name if you need a profile. Do not include private social-media data, addresses, phone numbers or real application data.

Mediation: key points, not full translation

A school notice says:

Im Unterricht bleiben Handys in der Tasche. Für Lernaufgaben kann die Lehrkraft die Nutzung erlauben.

A fictional exchange student asks what the rule means.

Give the two key points in simple English. Do not translate every word.

Possible start: At this school, phones ...

Feedback: one small next step

Use this after speaking or writing:

Check Yes / Not yet
The opinion is clear. ☐ / ☐
There are two reasons. ☐ / ☐
The reasons fit the opinion. ☐ / ☐
The message is easy to understand. ☐ / ☐
One question or reaction is included. ☐ / ☐

Give feedback like this:

Good: Your opinion is clear.
Next step: Add a second reason.
Try again: Say or write the improved version.

If you use AI for feedback, check its facts, suggestions and sources. Keep your own text and decide yourself which changes are useful. Do not send private recordings or personal data to external AI services without clear permission.

Transfer: use it again

Use the same language with a new topic:

Should the school day start later?
Is a class trip better than a normal school day?
Is gaming a good free-time activity?
Should students work in groups more often?

Your target stays the same: one opinion + two reasons + one response or question.

Can-do check

I can ... Yes With help Not yet
give my opinion clearly ☐ ☐ ☐
give two simple reasons ☐ ☐ ☐
ask a follow-up question ☐ ☐ ☐
react politely ☐ ☐ ☐
improve one sentence after feedback ☐ ☐ ☐
