E9 G - Explain something from Germany in English

Mini-description: Explain a German school, leisure or everyday-life term to a fictional English-speaking person. Use clear English, give context, react to questions and improve your explanation. The model term in this course is Pfand. Then you use the same strategy for your own term.

Level: English as a first foreign language, Year 9, G level, Baden-Württemberg.

Learning route: English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again.

Media start: What is happening here?

Look first. Do not translate every word.

What can you see? What is the person supposed to do?

Use one starter:

  1. I can see ...
  2. Maybe this machine ...
  3. I think people use it to ...

Mini-hint: bottle – machine – return – money – supermarket.

Quick guess: Why are empty cans still worth money?

I can ...

After this aiMOOC, you can say:

  1. I can explain a German everyday term in simple English.
  2. I can give context so another person understands why the term matters.
  3. I can react when somebody asks a question.
  4. I can ask for clarification when I do not understand.
  5. I can give a reason with because.
  6. I can improve a short spoken or written explanation after feedback.
  7. I can use the same strategy again for a new German term.

Activate your knowledge

Imagine this situation:

Maya, 15, from Manchester, is visiting Germany. She sees a bottle-return machine in a supermarket.

Maya asks:

“What does Pfand mean?”

Do not look up a full translation. Try to explain the idea.

Use: It is ... / You pay ... / When you return ... / Then you get ... back.

Model: Explain “Pfand”

Pfand is a deposit you pay when you buy certain drinks in Germany. You pay a little extra for the bottle or can. When it is empty, you can return it. In many supermarkets, you put it into a return machine. The machine gives you a receipt. You can use the receipt at the checkout and get the deposit back.

For many single-use drink containers in the German deposit system, the deposit is 25 cents. Reusable bottles can work differently. For this English task, the important idea is simple:

pay extra → return the container → get the deposit back

Culture note: Explain what you can observe and verify. Do not say things like “all Germans always ...”. A system can be common without every person using it in exactly the same way.

Listening and viewing

First viewing: Watch without reading a transcript. Focus only on the main idea.

Choose three questions:

  1. What do people pay?
  2. What do they return?
  3. Where can they return it?
  4. What do they get back?
  5. Which English word helps you understand Pfand?

Second viewing: Watch again. Pause after important information. If needed, use subtitles or a slower playback speed.

Listening strategy: You do not need every word. Listen for key words and the order of actions.

Listening support after your first try

Use this short support text only after the first listening attempt:

A deposit system adds money to the price of some drink containers. After the drink is finished, the empty container can be returned. A machine or shop accepts it, and the customer gets the deposit back.

Now compare: What did you understand before the support text? What became clearer?

Real sound: What does the machine sound like?

Listen for a few seconds.

Say: I hear ... / It sounds like ... / I think the machine is ...

There is no need to identify every sound correctly. The goal is to connect language with a real situation.

Reading: A message from Maya

Hi! I bought a drink in Germany today. The price label was a bit confusing because I paid more at the checkout. My friend said the extra money was “Pfand”. Later, she put the empty bottle into a machine and got a small paper receipt. Can you explain what happened? Do I have to keep every bottle?

Reading task:

  1. Find the problem Maya has.
  2. Find the two objects she mentions.
  3. Underline the action that happens after the drink is empty.
  4. Answer her last question in one or two clear English sentences.

Hint: You do not need to explain every legal detail. Answer the question she actually asked.

Context vocabulary

English Meaning in this situation Useful phrase
deposit extra money that you can get back You pay a deposit.
container a bottle or can that holds a drink Return the container.
return take something back You return the bottle.
receipt a small paper from the machine The machine gives you a receipt.
checkout the place where you pay in a shop Use it at the checkout.
reusable made to be used again This bottle is reusable.
single-use made for one use before recycling This is a single-use container.
system connected steps that work together It is a deposit system.

Do not learn the table as a word list. Use the words in a short explanation.

Pronunciation and fluency

Say this rhythmically:

You PAY a deposit. → You reTURN the bottle. → You GET the money BACK.

Focus on the stressed words. Clear meaning is more important than sounding like a native speaker.

Fluency ladder:

  1. Say the three steps slowly.
  2. Say them again without reading every word.
  3. Add one reason with because.
  4. Explain the idea to a partner in about 30 seconds.

Functional grammar

You need only a few structures.

Present simple for how a system works: You pay a deposit. The machine gives you a receipt.

When for the next step: When the bottle is empty, you return it.

Because for a reason: People return the bottle because they get the deposit back.

If for a useful condition: If you are not sure, check the label or ask in the shop.

Accuracy focus: Keep the word order clear. Use a subject + verb. Do not translate German sentence structure word for word.

Speaking: Explain it to Maya

Role-play in pairs.

Person A: You live in Germany and explain Pfand.

Person B: You are Maya. Ask two questions.

Useful questions:

  1. What exactly do I return?
  2. Where do I take it?
  3. What do I get back?
  4. Is every bottle the same?
  5. Can you explain that again, please?

Useful reactions:

  1. Sure. The main idea is ...
  2. Let me say it more simply.
  3. It depends on the type of bottle.
  4. I am not sure about that detail. Let’s check a reliable source.

Help levels

Help 1 – words: deposit – bottle – can – return – machine – receipt – money back

Help 2 – sentence starters: Pfand is ... You pay ... When the bottle is empty, ... Then ... This means ...

Help 3 – mini-model: Pfand is a deposit system. You pay a little extra for some drink containers. When you return the empty container, you get the deposit back.

Use only as much help as you need.

Ask, react, improve

Maya says:

“So Pfand is just another word for recycling?”

A strong answer could make the difference clear:

Not exactly. Pfand is the deposit you pay and can get back. The returned container may then be reused or recycled, depending on the type.

Now continue:

Maya: “Why does the system use money?”

Answer with: I think the money helps because ...

A second media example

This video uses German in a real-life context and includes English support.

Viewing task:

  1. Watch for actions, not every sentence.
  2. Note three things people do.
  3. Compare the video with your own explanation.
  4. Add one useful phrase to your speaking notes.

Rule: Subtitles are support, not the first step. Try listening and watching before reading them.

Image sequence: explain the process

Put the process into clear English:

buy → pay deposit → use drink → return container → get receipt → get money back

Now turn the arrows into connected sentences.

Challenge: Use when, then and because.

Writing: A short message

Write 70–100 words to Maya.

Your message should:

  1. explain what Pfand is,
  2. describe what she can do with the empty bottle,
  3. answer one possible question,
  4. use at least one connector such as when, because or so.

Writing frame:

Hi Maya,

Pfand is ...

When ...

You can ...

The main idea is ...

I hope that helps.

Do not copy the model text. Keep your own wording.

Optional mediation

A German-speaking person tells you:

„Pfand ist ein zusätzlicher Betrag. Bei vielen Getränkeflaschen oder Dosen bekommst du ihn zurück, wenn du die leere Verpackung zurückgibst.“

Maya asks you in English what this means.

Do not translate every word. Give the useful information in natural English.

Starter: It means that ...

Feedback: Two stars and one next step

Give feedback on a partner’s explanation.

Star 1 – clear idea: What was easy to understand?

Star 2 – useful language: Which phrase worked well?

Next step: Name one change that would make the explanation clearer.

Choose only one main language point:

  1. word order,
  2. missing verb,
  3. unclear pronoun,
  4. wrong key word,
  5. too much detail.

Do not rewrite your partner’s whole text. Help them keep their own voice.

Error analysis

Improve these sentences:

1. You become your money back.

Better: You get your money back.

2. You give the bottle in the machine.

Better: You put the bottle into the machine.

3. Pfand is recycling.

Better: Pfand is a deposit system. Returned containers can be reused or recycled.

4. Because you return the bottle. You get money back.

Better: You get money back because you return the bottle.

Mini-rule: In English, get often means bekommen. Become means werden.

Transfer: Explain another term

Choose one German school, leisure or everyday-life term that an English-speaking visitor may not know.

Possible ideas:

  1. Schultüte
  2. Pausenbrot
  3. Jugendhaus
  4. Verein
  5. Freibad
  6. Wandertag

Use the same five-step pattern:

1. Name it.

2. Say what it is.

3. Give a typical situation.

4. Say why it matters in that situation.

5. Invite a question.

Example ending: Does that make sense, or should I give you an example?

Media transfer: Schultüte

Without using a dictionary first, explain what you think a Schultüte is.

Then check one reliable source and improve your explanation.

Important: Customs can vary between families and regions. Explain the practice without claiming that every child or family does exactly the same thing.

Safe and responsible media work

Use media actively, but protect privacy.

  1. Use freely licensed media such as Wikimedia Commons when possible.
  2. Use fictional names and fictional profile or application data in tasks.
  3. Do not use private social-media data.
  4. Audio or video recordings are optional and should stay private unless you have clear permission to share them.
  5. Do not upload a classmate’s work, voice or image without permission.
  6. Do not send personal data to an external AI service without permission.
  7. If AI gives you facts, sources or language feedback, check them.
  8. Keep your own text. Improve it instead of replacing it with an AI-written version.

Fact check

For the model term Pfand, check important facts before you present them.

Reliable starting points:

  1. Deutsche Pfandsystem GmbH: https://dpg-pfandsystem.de/
  2. Current German packaging law, § 46 VerpackDG: https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/verpackdg/__46.html
  3. Wikipedia overview: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pfand_auf_Getr%C3%A4nkebeh%C3%A4lter

Source question: Is your source current? Does it explain the exact detail you want to use?

Can-do check

Mark each point:

Yes / Almost / Not yet

  1. I can explain one German term in clear English.
  2. I can use an example instead of translating every word.
  3. I can ask and answer a follow-up question.
  4. I can connect ideas with when, because or so.
  5. I can correct one important language problem.
  6. I can check a cultural or factual claim.
  7. I can explain a second term with less help.

If you mark Almost or Not yet, return to the matching section and try again with one help level.

Follow-up course

Next step: explain a more complex German school or everyday concept in a short dialogue or mini-presentation.

Possible follow-up focus: compare two contexts → answer spontaneous questions → give an opinion with reasons → improve after feedback
