E9 G - Answer common interview questions
E9 G - Answer common interview questions

Mini-Beschreibung: In this aiMOOC you practise short, clear answers to common job interview questions. You learn to say why you are interested in a job, what you are good at and how to give a simple example.

Vorwissen
You already know many useful words: job, work, school, team, help, learn, like, can, good, friendly, organised.
Try first without a dictionary:
What are you good at?
Say one short answer. Example: I am good at working in a team.
Medien-Einstieg

Look at the picture for 30 seconds.
- Interview setting: Who can you see? Where are they?
- Body language: What looks friendly or professional?
- Prediction: What question could the interviewer ask?
Now compare your ideas with a partner. Use short English sentences.
Viewing mission: Watch a short part first without stopping. Do not try to understand every word. Listen for words about skills, job, experience and questions.
Model situation
Fictional profile:
| Name | Jamie |
|---|---|
| Age | 15 |
| Situation | school work experience |
| Place | Bright Bikes, a fictional bicycle shop |
| Strengths | friendly, reliable, good at organising |
| Experience | helps at a school event |
Jamie does not need perfect English. Jamie needs clear ideas, useful words and understandable sentences.
Common interview questions
Why are you interested in this job?
A useful answer has three small parts:
interest + reason + link to the job
Model: I am interested in this job because I like working with people. I also like bikes and practical work. I would like to learn more about customer service.
Your frame: I am interested in this job because I like ____. I also enjoy ____. I would like to learn more about ____.

What are you good at?
Name one or two real strengths. Add a small example.
Model: I am good at organising things. At school, I helped to plan a class event. I also work well in a team.
Your frame: I am good at ____. For example, I ____. I also ____.
Can you tell me about yourself?
Keep it short and relevant.
Model: I am in Year 9. I enjoy practical tasks and working with other people. At school, I like English and technology. I am looking for a work experience place where I can learn new skills.
Tip: You do not need to tell your whole life story.
Can you give me an example?
A simple example makes your answer stronger.
Model: Yes. Last month, our class organised a school event. I made a list of tasks and helped my group. We finished everything on time.
Easy structure: When? – What did you do? – What was the result?
Do you have any questions for us?
Ask one simple question.
Useful questions:
| Situation | Question |
|---|---|
| daily work | What would I do on a typical day? |
| learning | What can I learn during the work experience? |
| team | Who would I work with? |
| next step | What happens next? |
Listening and Viewing
This British Council video shows a job interview with several speakers.
First viewing: Watch a short section without transcript or subtitles. Choose the main idea: Is the candidate talking about experience, hobbies or travel?
Second viewing: Listen again. Note three words you understand.
Third step: Only now use subtitles or the transcript if you need them. Check your three words and one answer.
Respond: Which answer sounds clear to you? Give one reason: I think this answer is clear because ...
Learn from mistakes
Watch a short section. Find one answer that does not fit the interview well.
Do not copy the whole dialogue. Instead, improve one idea.
Example task: Change a very short or negative answer into 2–3 clear, polite sentences.
Reading
Read this short fictional interview.
Interviewer: Why are you interested in this work experience?
Jamie: I am interested because I like practical work. I also enjoy helping people. I would like to learn how a shop works.
Interviewer: What are you good at?
Jamie: I am good at organising things. For example, I helped at our school sports day. I made a simple plan for my group.
Interviewer: Do you have a question for us?
Jamie: Yes. What can I learn during the week?
Reading task: Find one reason, one strength and one example.
Kontextwortschatz
| Word or chunk | Simple clue | Use it |
|---|---|---|
| interested in | shows what you want to know or do | I am interested in this job. |
| good at | talks about a strength | I am good at organising. |
| reliable | people can trust you to do what you say | I am reliable. |
| team | people working together | I work well in a team. |
| experience | something you have done before | I have experience from a school project. |
| learn | get new knowledge or skills | I would like to learn more. |
| because | gives a reason | I like the job because I enjoy practical work. |
| for example | introduces an example | For example, I helped at a school event. |
Mini-task: Choose four chunks and make two connected sentences.
Pronunciation and Fluency
Clear speech is more important than sounding like a native speaker.
Practise in chunks:
I am interested in this job / because I like practical work.
I am good at organising things. / For example, I helped at a school event.
Could you repeat the question, please?
Speak at a calm speed. Pause between ideas. Stress the important words, not every word.
Fluency loop: Read once → look away → say the idea → say it again with one small improvement.
Speaking

Work in pairs.
Student A: interviewer. Student B: applicant.
Use three questions:
- Interview question: Why are you interested in this job?
- Strength: What are you good at?
- Example: Can you give me an example?
Then switch roles.
Follow-up question: Ask one short extra question: Why?, When?, What happened? or Can you tell me more?
If you do not understand: Could you repeat the question, please? or Could you say that more slowly, please?
Writing
Write a short interview answer with 3–5 sentences.
Choose one question:
Why are you interested in this job?
or
What are you good at?
Use this structure:
| Sentence | Job |
|---|---|
| 1 | Give your answer. |
| 2 | Give a reason. |
| 3 | Add an example. |
| 4 | Add one useful detail if you can. |
Keep your own text. Feedback should help you improve it, not replace it.
Mediation
A friend has a short German note:
„Im Gespräch kurz antworten, einen Grund nennen und ein Beispiel geben. Wenn du etwas nicht verstehst, freundlich nachfragen.“
Explain the advice orally in simple English. Do not translate every word.
A possible start is: In an interview, give a short answer. Then ...
Functional grammar
You only need a few grammar tools for this task.
| Function | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| give a strength | be + good at + noun or -ing | I am good at organising. |
| say what you can do | can + base verb | I can work in a team. |
| give a reason | because + sentence | I like the job because I enjoy practical work. |
| talk about a past example | simple past | I helped at a school event. |
| talk about a learning goal | would like to + base verb | I would like to learn more. |
Accuracy focus: Keep can + verb correct. Use because for one clear reason. Do not stop speaking because of a small grammar mistake.
Help levels
Choose only as much help as you need.
| Level | Help |
|---|---|
| Hint 1 | Key words: interested – because – people – practical – learn |
| Hint 2 | Sentence starters: I am interested in ... / I am good at ... / For example, ... |
| Hint 3 | Model pattern: Answer + reason + example |
| Hint 4 | Read a model once, cover it, then build your own answer. |
Feedback
Use two strengths + one next step.
Strength 1: I understood your main idea.
Strength 2: Your example matched the question.
Next step: Add a reason with because.
Feedback should be short and specific. Do not rewrite your partner's whole answer.
Fehleranalyse
Improve only the central points.
| Not yet | Better | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| I interested in this job. | I am interested in this job. | You need am. |
| I am good in organising. | I am good at organising. | Use good at. |
| I can working in a team. | I can work in a team. | After can, use the base verb. |
| I like this job. I like people. | I like this job because I enjoy working with people. | Connect the reason. |
Repair routine: Find one problem → correct it → say the whole sentence again → use it in a new answer.
Transfer

Change the situation. Your answer should change too.
| Fictional place | Useful strength | Possible reason |
|---|---|---|
| Green Garden Centre | careful | I like working outdoors. |
| City Library | organised | I enjoy helping people find things. |
| Tech Repair Point | patient | I like solving practical problems. |
| Sunny Café | friendly | I enjoy working with people. |
Choose one place. Answer the same two questions again. Do not copy your first answer word for word.
Can-do check
| I can ... | Yes | With help | Not yet |
