E8 G - A greener school day

Mini-Beschreibung: Develop a few simple ideas for a greener fictional school day and give reasons for them.

Level: English, Klasse 8, G-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg.

Your mission: Imagine Greenfield School. It is fictional. You want to make one normal school day more resource-friendly. Choose only a few realistic changes. Explain: What should change? Why?

Start with media

Look – think – speak. What can you see? What could be greener at a school?

Try first in English:

  1. I can see ...
  2. Students can ...
  3. This is greener because ...

Need help? Ask a partner. Then use the word bank below. German help comes last.

Viewing task – first watch: Watch without notes. Choose the main idea: saving energy / buying new things / school sports.

Second watch: Write down two actions students can do at school. Pause if needed. Use subtitles only after your first try.

I can ...

After this aiMOOC, you can say:

  1. I can understand the main idea of a short video about saving resources.
  2. I can find important information in a short text.
  3. I can suggest a few greener actions for a school day.
  4. I can give a simple reason with because.
  5. I can write a short connected opinion text.
  6. I can understand some passive and past perfect forms when I meet them in a text.

What do you already know?

60-second warm-up: Which words do you already know?

energy – waste – bottle – bike – bus – lunch – light – water – reuse – recycle

Choose three and make one short sentence.

Example: We can reuse a bottle.

Context: Greenfield School

Greenfield School is fictional. Four students look at one school day. They do not want a perfect school. They want three simple changes.

At 7:45, many students arrive by car. At break time, some students buy drinks in single-use bottles. After lessons, lights and screens are sometimes still on in empty rooms.

The Eco Team has one question:

How can our school day use fewer resources?

Listening and viewing

Round 1 – gist: Listen and watch. Which three ideas are central? reduce – reuse – recycle / drive – print – throw away / buy – use – forget

Round 2 – details: Find one example for reduce, one for reuse and one for recycle.

Hint: You do not need every word. Listen for repeated key words.

German help if needed: reduce = weniger verbrauchen; reuse = wiederverwenden; recycle = recyceln. Nutze diese Hilfe erst nach Deinem ersten Versuch.

Mini listening: two students

First listen: Do not read the transcript. Ask a teacher or partner to read the short dialogue twice at a moderate speed.

Answer:

  1. What does Sam bring for lunch?
  2. What does Lina check after the lesson?
  3. Which idea do both students like?

Transcript – open only after your first listening try

Sam: I bring my lunch in a reusable box and I refill my water bottle.
Lina: Good idea. After lessons, I check the lights and the screen.
Sam: What about coming by bike on Friday?
Lina: I like that idea, but only if the route is safe. We can also take the bus.
Sam: Great. Small changes are easier to start.

Check: Sam brings lunch in a reusable box. Lina checks the lights and the screen. Both like a greener travel idea, with safety in mind.

Optional challenge video

This video is faster. Watch only for the big idea: What can happen to a plastic bottle after we throw it away?

Do not try to understand every detail.

Reading: Three small changes

Read first. Do not translate every sentence.

Maya: travel Maya says that more students can walk, cycle or use a bus when this is possible and safe. She thinks a class bike day can be fun. She says that the school needs good bike racks.

Leo: drinks and lunch Leo brings a reusable bottle. He fills it with tap water where safe drinking water is available. He also uses a lunch box. He says, “We can use the same things again.”

Nora: energy Nora checks the classroom before the class leaves. She switches off lights and screens that are not needed. She opens the blinds when daylight is enough.

Check your reading:

  1. Which student talks about transport?
  2. Which student talks about a reusable bottle?
  3. Which student talks about lights and screens?
  4. Which idea would be easiest at Greenfield School? Give one reason.

Context vocabulary

English Simple English help German help – only if needed
resource something we use, for example water or energy Ressource
waste use more than we need / unwanted material verschwenden / Abfall
reusable can be used again wiederverwendbar
switch off stop a light or device ausschalten
single-use used one time Einweg-
bike rack a place to park a bike Fahrradständer
save energy use less energy Energie sparen
suggestion an idea for what to do Vorschlag

Pronunciation

Say the words slowly, then in a short sentence:

re-CY-cle – re-U-se – re-SOURCE – E-ner-gy – sug-GES-tion

Clap the stressed part.

Mini-practice: “My suggestion is to reuse our bottles.”

Goal: Be easy to understand. A perfect accent is not the goal.

Functional grammar

Giving suggestions and reasons

Use:

  1. We can + verb: We can reuse bottles.
  2. We should + verb: We should switch off lights.
  3. because + sentence: We should cycle because it uses no fuel for the trip.
  4. I think ... because ...: I think reusable bottles are useful because we can use them again.

Important: After should, use the verb without to.

Reported speech – no backshift

For this course, keep the tense simple:

Maya says, “We need more bike racks.” → Maya says that the school needs more bike racks.

Leo says, “We can reuse bottles.” → Leo says that students can reuse bottles.

= Receptive grammar: understand, do not force

At G-level, you only need to recognise the meaning here.

Passive: “The lights are switched off after class.” Meaning: The action is important; the person is not important.

Past perfect: “Before Nora checked the room, the class had left the lights on.” Meaning: Leaving the lights on happened before Nora checked the room.

You do not need to produce these forms in your final text.

Speaking

Task: Pick two ideas. Talk for about 30–45 seconds.

Use this frame if you need it:

“Our school can ... . I think this is a good idea because ... . We can also ... .”

Ask your partner:

  1. What do you think?
  2. Why is this a good idea?
  3. Is it easy to do?

Partner feedback: Did you hear a suggestion + a reason? Say one thing that was clear.

Writing

Write 70–100 words: A greener school day.

Your text needs:

  1. a short opening sentence,
  2. two or three suggestions,
  3. a reason for each suggestion,
  4. one final sentence.

Writing frame:

At Greenfield School, we want a greener school day. First, we can ... because ... . We can also ... . This is useful because ... . Finally, ... . I think these small changes ...

Less help: Write without the frame, but connect your ideas with first, also, because and finally.

Mediation

A German-speaking friend asks: “Was plant die Eco Group?”

Explain the three main ideas in German in 3–4 short sentences. Do not translate every English sentence. Give only the important information.

Then switch back to English and name your favourite idea.

Help ladder

Use help in this order:

  1. Try: Read or listen once.
  2. Context: Look at pictures and known words.
  3. Ask: Ask a partner one clear question.
  4. Hint: Use the word bank or sentence frame.
  5. German help: Use only the small German hints.
  6. Check: Compare with the feedback section.

No full translation is needed.

Direct feedback

Reading: Maya = transport; Leo = bottle/lunch; Nora = energy.

Viewing: A strong answer names actions such as switching off unused lights/devices, reducing waste, reusing items or recycling.

Speaking/Writing: Your answer is on track if it has:

  1. at least two realistic suggestions,
  2. at least one clear reason with because,
  3. connected sentences,
  4. understandable English.

Error analysis

Find and fix the problem.

1. We should to switch off the lights. → We should switch off the lights.

2. I am agree because it saves resources. → I agree because it saves resources.

3. We can reusable bottles. → We can reuse bottles. / We can use reusable bottles.

4. Because it saves energy. → Add a main idea: We should switch off lights because it saves energy.

Your check: Look for these four problems in your own text before you finish.

Transfer: Build your greener school day

Choose three moments in a fictional school day:

7:45 arrival – 9:30 classroom – 10:15 break – 12:30 lunch – 15:20 end of school

For each moment, write: action + reason

Example: “At 10:15, students can use reusable bottles because they create less single-use waste.”

Keep your plan realistic. You do not need a perfect zero-waste school.

Can-do check

I can ... yes almost not yet
understand the main idea of a short video □ □ □
find key information in a short text □ □ □
make two or three suggestions □ □ □
give reasons with because □ □ □

Next step: If you have two or more “almost/not yet”, repeat one video, use the word bank and improve only one part of your text.

Responsible media and AI use

  1. Use only fictional profiles in this course. Do not share private social-media data.
  2. Recordings are voluntary and should stay private unless everyone involved agrees to share them.
  3. Do not upload school recordings, names or photos to external AI tools without clear permission.
  4. If you use AI for practice, check the language level, facts and feedback. Keep your own ideas and your own final text.
  5. AI can help you notice errors, but it should not replace your writing.
