E8 E - Create a book podcast or review

Mini-description: Create an English audio or text review with a short summary, a clear opinion, reasons and a recommendation. Work mainly in English, react to other views and improve your text or recording step by step.

Einleitung

A good book review does more than retell a story. You select the important points, give your own view, support it with reasons and help an audience decide whether the book could be interesting for them.

Your final product: Choose one:

  1. Audio review / mini-podcast: about 60–90 seconds.
  2. Text review: about 120–160 words.

Use your own words. Do not copy longer passages from a book. Recordings are voluntary and should stay private unless your school has agreed on a safe way to share them.

I can ...

  1. I can summarise a book briefly without giving away too much.
  2. I can give an opinion and support it with clear reasons.
  3. I can recommend a book to a specific audience.
  4. I can use passive forms and reported speech when they fit my message.
  5. I can revise my review after feedback and explain what I changed.

Start: What do you already know?

Look at the picture. Think for 30 seconds, then speak to a partner.

Quick talk:

  1. Which book, comic or graphic novel do you remember well?
  2. What made it memorable?
  3. Would you recommend it? Give one reason.

English first: Try to explain your idea in English. Use context. Ask a partner. Use the hint box below. Use German only if you still cannot express the key idea.

Hint box

Useful starters:

  1. The book is about ...
  2. The main character ...
  3. What I liked most was ...
  4. One reason is that ...
  5. However, ...
  6. I would recommend it to ...
  7. If you enjoy ..., this book may be for you.

German help if needed: summary = kurze Inhaltsangabe; opinion = Meinung; reason = Begründung; recommendation = Empfehlung; spoiler = wichtige Wendung vorwegnehmen. Do not translate your whole review sentence by sentence.

Listening and Viewing

Viewing 1: How is a review organised?

Watch the first part of this video. Focus on structure, not every word.

While watching: Write four short notes:

  1. What information comes first?
  2. Where does the summary appear?
  3. How is an opinion added?
  4. How does the reviewer guide the audience?

Try first. If you miss something, watch again. Then compare notes with a partner.

Viewing 2: Listen to a real review voice

This video is an English listening example built around a book review.

Listen once without stopping. Then listen again and note:

  1. one fact about the book,
  2. one opinion,
  3. one reason,
  4. one expression that sounds useful for your own review.

Media check: A confident voice does not automatically make an opinion a fact. Separate factual information from personal judgement.

Viewing 3: Compare advice

Compare the advice in this video with your notes from Viewing 1. Which advice is similar? Which point would you actually use in a 60–90 second school podcast?

Reading: A model review

Practice text – fictional book and fictional reviewer

Signal Lost – a short review

Signal Lost is a fictional adventure novel by Maya Stone. It follows Noor, a teenager who finds an old radio that receives messages from an unknown person. The mystery is revealed slowly, and the story becomes more tense when Noor realises that the messages are connected to her town.

I liked the book because the main character makes believable mistakes and has to rethink her choices. A friend told me that the ending had surprised him, and I can understand why. Before the final clue appeared, Noor had been trying to contact the unknown voice for weeks.

I would recommend the book to readers who enjoy mystery, technology and fast decisions. It is not perfect, but the strong atmosphere makes it worth reading.

Reading check

Answer in short English phrases.

  1. What is the book mainly about?
  2. Which sentence gives the reviewer’s opinion?
  3. Which reason supports the opinion?
  4. Who is the target audience?
  5. Which detail is a fact about the fictional story, and which detail is a judgement?

Context vocabulary

opinion what you think or feel In my opinion, ...
reason why you think something One reason is that ...
evidence a detail that supports a point For example, ...

engaging interesting enough to keep attention The opening is engaging.

Pronunciation

Clarity is more important than sounding like a native speaker.

Focus words:

  1. review – stress the second part.
  2. character – stress the first syllable.
  3. recommendation – stress the syllable before “tion”.
  4. opinion – keep the middle sound clear.

Micro-practice: Say one sentence slowly. Then say it again at a natural pace. Keep key words clear and pause between summary, opinion and recommendation.

Speaking: Create a mini-podcast

Use this four-part plan:

  1. Hook + book: Name the title, author and genre if known.
  2. Short summary: Give only the central situation.
  3. Opinion + reasons: Give at least two linked reasons.
  4. Recommendation: Name a suitable audience.

E-level challenge: After your podcast, answer one spontaneous question from a partner, for example: “What would you change about the book?” or “Which character was most convincing?”

Privacy: Recording is optional. A live spoken version is equally valid. Do not upload recordings to public platforms unless this has been explicitly agreed through school rules.

Writing: Build a clear review

Write about 120–160 words. Aim for short paragraphs and precise reasons.

Structure:

  1. paragraph 1: book + short summary
  2. paragraph 2: opinion + reasons + one example
  3. paragraph 3: balanced point + recommendation

Avoid: plot retelling, long quotations, copied online reviews and vague comments such as “It was good” without a reason.

Functional grammar

Use grammar because it improves your message.

Passive voice – productive at M/E level

The passive is useful when the action is more important than the person doing it.

Examples:

  1. The story is told from two perspectives.
  2. The mystery is revealed slowly.
  3. The final chapter was written in a very different style.

Try: Change one active sentence from your notes into a useful passive sentence.

Reported speech – backshift, questions and commands

Use reported speech to include another reader’s reaction.

Examples:

  1. Direct: Mia said, “The ending surprised me.” → Reported: Mia said that the ending had surprised her.
  2. Direct: Leo asked, “Would you read it again?” → Reported: Leo asked whether I would read it again.
  3. Direct: Our teacher said, “Avoid spoilers.” → Reported: Our teacher told us to avoid spoilers.

Use reported speech only when it adds something useful.

Past perfect progressive – E receptive

In this course you only need to recognise the form and understand its function.

Example from the model: “Noor had been trying to contact the unknown voice for weeks.”

It describes an activity that continued for some time before another past event. You do not need to force this form into your own review.

Mediation

A German school library gives this notice:

„Für eine Buchvorstellung darfst du kurze Notizen verwenden. Die Aufnahme bleibt auf dem Schulgerät. Lade keine Stimme, kein Bild und keine privaten Daten ungefragt auf öffentliche Plattformen hoch.“

Your fictional English-speaking exchange student Alex asks what the rule means.

Task: Explain the important points in 2–3 English sentences. Do not translate every word.

Media literacy and AI

A review is an opinion text, but facts still need checking.

  1. Check title, author, genre and important factual details.
  2. Notice whether a video is a review, an advertisement or sponsored content.
  3. Do not copy another reviewer’s wording.
  4. If you use AI for feedback, check its level, facts and suggestions.
  5. AI may help you notice problems, but it should not replace your own review.
  6. Never send private recordings, personal profiles or classmates’ data to an external AI service without permission.

Feedback and error analysis

Use one glow + one grow.

Glow: Name one part that already works well.

Grow: Name one specific next step.

Use these feedback codes:

  1. C = content: Is the summary short and accurate?
  2. A = argument: Are opinions supported by reasons?
  3. S = structure: Is the review easy to follow?
  4. L = language: Are grammar and words clear enough?
  5. D = delivery: In audio, are pace and pauses understandable?

After feedback, change at least two things and mark the changes in your draft or planning notes.
