E7 M - Meine Englisch-Kompetenzen Klasse 7 diagnostizieren

Mini-Beschreibung: Find out what you can already do in listening, reading, speaking, writing, mediation, vocabulary and grammar. Then choose the learning course that fits you.

Your route: Notice → understand → try → use → communicate → feedback → improve → use again.

Important: This is a learning check, not a grade. Work in English first. Use a hint only when you need it. German help comes later and stays short.

Einleitung

You are in Class 7, M level. In this aiMOOC you test seven core diagnostic areas plus pronunciation with short tasks. The tasks use everyday topics, short authentic-style texts and media. You should understand the main idea, find details, react, explain, write and mediate.

The Baden-Württemberg curriculum for English as a first foreign language names listening/viewing, reading, speaking, writing, mediation, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and media competence for Classes 7/8/9. This check focuses on a manageable Class-7 M-level snapshot.

Privacy and AI: Speaking recordings are optional and stay private. Do not upload recordings, names, faces or private social-media data. If you use AI feedback, check the level and the advice. AI may help you improve your own text, but it should not replace it.

I-can goals

  1. Listening/Viewing: I can understand the main idea and important details in a short video with more than one speaker.
  2. Reading: I can understand a short text and connect ideas.
  3. Speaking: I can ask, react, give reasons and give a short presentation.
  4. Writing: I can write a structured email, report, story or opinion paragraph.
  5. Mediation: I can pass on the important information for another person.
  6. Vocabulary: I can use useful words in context.
  7. Grammar: I can choose grammar that makes my meaning clear.
  8. Pronunciation: I can speak clearly enough to be understood.

Before you start: quick self-check

Choose one sign for each skill on paper: 🟢 I can do this without help | 🟡 I can do it with a hint | 🔴 Not yet.

Do not change your first answer after checking. The goal is to see what to practise next.

Diagnostic stations

Station 1: Listening and Viewing

Watch the BBC Learning English video. For diagnosis, focus on the conversation example around 03:21–05:54. Listen once for the main idea. Listen a second time for details.

Try first.

  1. What makes the conversation work well?
  2. Write down two ways the speakers show interest.
  3. Write one useful follow-up question you hear or can build from the model.

Hint: Listen for short reactions and questions after an answer.

Deutsch nur bei Bedarf: Achte beim zweiten Hören auf Reaktionen wie Interesse zeigen und auf Anschlussfragen.

Feedback: You are on track if you can name the main idea and at least two useful conversation moves. Exact wording is less important than meaning.

Mini-transfer: Ask a partner a simple question about a hobby. React to the answer and ask one follow-up question.

Mark your listening station: 🟢 / 🟡 / 🔴.

Station 2: Reading

Read:

On Friday, Maya’s class planned a “screen-free lunch break”. At first, some students thought it would be boring because they usually watched short videos or played games. Maya suggested bringing card games and a football. Leo wanted a quiet corner for drawing and reading. During the break, the playground was busier than usual. Two students who had never spoken much before started a card game together. After lunch, the class voted on the idea. Most students did not want a screen-free break every day, but they agreed to try it again once a week. Maya was happy because the plan had changed the way some classmates spent time together.

Try first.

  1. Give the text a short English title.
  2. Why were some students unsure at first?
  3. What changed during the break?
  4. Why was Maya happy?

Hint: Underline contrast words and time words: at first, during, after, but, because.

Deutsch nur bei Bedarf: Suche nicht jedes unbekannte Wort. Verbinde zuerst Hauptaussage, Zeitfolge und Gründe.

Feedback: A strong answer mentions the first doubt, the different activities, new interaction between classmates and the final once-a-week decision.

Mini-transfer: Write one sentence: I would / would not join because …

Mark your reading station: 🟢 / 🟡 / 🔴.

Station 3: Vocabulary in context

Watch one short part of the vocabulary box set. Choose one word that is useful for your own school life.

Complete these sentences with words that fit the context: challenge, plan, idea, opinion, information.

  1. We need a clear ______ before we start the project.
  2. In my ______, the second option is better.
  3. Finding the right words can be a ______.
  4. This website gives useful ______ about the museum.
  5. I have an ______ for our class activity.

Hint: Read the whole sentence before choosing.

Feedback: plan – opinion – challenge – information – idea.

Mini-transfer: Use two of the words in one new sentence about school.

Mark your vocabulary station: 🟢 / 🟡 / 🔴.

Station 4: Pronunciation and clear speech

Your goal is being understood, not sounding accent-free. Listen for word stress and clear rhythm.

Say these words aloud: important – activity – information – together – opinion.

Then read: In my opinion, the activity was important because we worked together.

Try: Stress the important content words. Keep the sentence moving.

Hint: Do not pronounce every syllable with the same strength.

Optional private check: Record only on your own device, listen once and delete it if you want. No upload is needed.

Feedback: If a listener can understand your words and your key message without repeated guessing, your pronunciation is doing its job.

Mark your pronunciation station: 🟢 / 🟡 / 🔴.

Station 5: Speaking

Choose one prompt and speak for about 45–60 seconds.

  1. A school day should have one longer break. Do you agree?
  2. Which after-school activity would you recommend to a new student?
  3. Describe a small problem at school and suggest a solution.

Use this structure: idea → reason → example → short ending.

Then do a mini-dialogue: A: What do you think? B: I think … because … A: Really? Why? / Can you give an example? B: …

Hint: Useful phrases: In my view … / I agree because … / I’m not sure because … / For example … / What about you?

Deutsch nur bei Bedarf: Wichtig sind verständliche Aussagen, Reaktion, Begründung und ein Beispiel – nicht perfekte Fehlerfreiheit.

Feedback: Green if you can keep going, give a reason and react to another speaker. Yellow if you need phrase support. Red if long pauses stop communication.

Mark your speaking station: 🟢 / 🟡 / 🔴.

Station 6: Writing

Write 80–100 words.

Situation: A student from another school will visit your class next week. Write a friendly email. Explain:

  1. what a normal school morning is like,
  2. one class rule,
  3. one thing the visitor should bring,
  4. one activity you recommend after lessons.

Try first: Write without a translation tool.

Hint 1 – structure: greeting → short opening → information in a useful order → friendly ending.

Hint 2 – language: usually, first, then, because, but, you should, I recommend.

Deutsch nur bei Bedarf: Prüfe am Ende: Ist die Reihenfolge klar? Sind alle vier Inhalte enthalten?

Feedback checklist: clear purpose; all four points; understandable sentences; useful linking words; mostly suitable tense forms; spelling does not block meaning.

AI rule: If you use AI feedback, compare every suggestion with your own text. Keep your own ideas and voice.

Mark your writing station: 🟢 / 🟡 / 🔴.

Station 7: Mediation

German information for a visitor:

Die Schulbibliothek ist montags bis donnerstags bis 15:30 Uhr geöffnet. Am Freitag schließt sie schon um 13:30 Uhr. Taschen bleiben am Eingang in den Fächern. Essen und offene Getränke sind nicht erlaubt. Für Gruppenarbeit kann man einen Tisch reservieren.

Task: Your English-speaking exchange student asks: Can we work on our science project in the library on Friday afternoon, and can I bring my drink?

Answer in English. Pass on only the information the student needs.

Hint: Do not translate every sentence. Select, explain and make it useful for this person.

Feedback: Your answer should say that Friday closing time is 13:30, group work is possible with a reserved table, and open drinks are not allowed. A natural answer is more important than a word-for-word translation.

Mini-transfer: Add one polite suggestion for another time or place.

Mark your mediation station: 🟢 / 🟡 / 🔴.

Station 8: Functional grammar

This check tests grammar you need to communicate about everyday events and experiences. It does not pull later topics forward.

Choose the best form:

  1. I usually ___ to school by bike. → go / am going
  2. Yesterday we ___ a class meeting. → had / have had
  3. I ___ this film twice. → have seen / saw
  4. Look at those clouds! It ___ rain. → is going to / went to
  5. If I have time, I ___ you. → will help / helped
  6. The girl ___ sits next to me is new. → who / where

Watch this short explanation for the contrast between present perfect and simple past:

Hint: Ask: Is the time finished and named? Is the experience connected to now? Is this a plan, condition or description?

Feedback: go – had – have seen – is going to – will help – who.

Controlled E-look ahead only: You may notice sentences such as She had left before I arrived. You do not need to master the past perfect in this M-level diagnosis. Passive and reported speech are not tested here.

Mark your grammar station: 🟢 / 🟡 / 🔴.

Your diagnosis and next course

Count your colours. A single red result is not a failure; it tells you where to practise next.

If almost everything is green, repeat one task with less preparation or add a new detail. Improvement comes from using English again, not from collecting rules.

Can-do check

Mark each statement: Yes / Almost / Not yet.

  1. I can get the main idea of a short video at moderate natural speed.
  2. I can find explicit details and connect ideas in a short text.
  3. I can ask a follow-up question and react to an answer.
  4. I can give a short reason and example when I speak.
  5. I can write a structured text of about 80–100 words.
  6. I can mediate the information another person really needs.
  7. I can use useful vocabulary and grammar to make my meaning clear.
  8. I can use pronunciation and word stress so that other people understand me.
