E7 G - I can read – English 7

Mini-Beschreibung: You read short English texts and find the main idea and important details. You work with short stories, blogs, recommendations, messages and information texts. This course is for Klasse 7, G-Niveau, Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Baden-Württemberg.
Your learning path: Notice → understand → try → use → communicate → feedback → improve → use again.
Important: English first. Try before you use help. Use pictures, titles and key words. German help is short and only for support. You do not need a full translation.
Einleitung
This aiMOOC trains reading in small steps. The texts are short. The vocabulary is limited. Useful chunks come back again and again.
The course follows the G-level focus of the Baden-Württemberg curriculum for English as a first foreign language in Sekundarstufe I: learners work with simple functional, factual and fictional texts and use guided tasks to find main ideas and important information. Typical text types include messages, blogs, recommendations and stories.
Bildungsplan Baden-Württemberg: Leseverstehen Klassen 7/8/9
All learner profiles and text messages in this course are fictional. Do not use private social-media data.
Media start: Look, think, predict

Look at the reading icon.
Try: What can help you understand a text before you read every word?
Hint: Think about the title, picture, names and repeated words.
Deutsch, wenn nötig: Erst Überblick, dann Details.
I-can goals
| I can ... | Small help |
|---|---|
| understand the main idea of a short text. | The text is mainly about ... |
| find important details. | Who? Where? When? What? |
| understand a short story, blog, recommendation, message and information text. | Look at text type and purpose. |
| use context to guess some words. | Read the words before and after. |
| give a short reason for my answer. | I think ... because ... |
| write a short recommendation or message. | Use the writing frame. |
What you already know
Read these three mini-lines.
A: “Meet me at the library at 4.” B: “I loved this book because it was funny.” C: “The club meets every Tuesday.”
Which text is a message? Which line gives a recommendation? Which line gives information?
Hint: Look for meeting words, opinion words and facts.
Deutsch, wenn nötig: Nachricht – Empfehlung – Information.
Reading strategy: three steps

| Step | What you do | Useful chunk |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Look | Look at title, picture and text type. | I think this is about ... |
| 2. Read fast | Find the main idea. Do not stop at every new word. | The main idea is ... |
| 3. Read again | Find two or three details. | I found ... |
Rule: You do not need every word to understand a short text.
Listening and viewing: reading tips

First watch without a transcript. Listen for familiar words. You may replay the video.
Try 1: Watch about the first minute. Write down two words you understand.
Try 2: Watch again. What is the topic: reading, sport, food or travel?
Hint: Listen for reading, book and tips.
After your try: You may switch on subtitles. Do not translate every sentence.
Deutsch, wenn nötig: Suche nur das Thema und bekannte Schlüsselwörter.
A second media check
Watch a short part. Pause after one tip.
Mini-task: Say one reading tip in simple English: I can ...
Model: I can read the title first.
Reading 1: A short story

Leo and the blue bag
On Friday, Leo missed the bus. He walked to the library. In front of the door, he saw a small blue bag. A note said, “For the school book club.” Leo took the bag to the desk. Ms Green smiled. The books were for a reading project. Leo was late, but he helped the club.
Try: What is the main idea?
A) Leo helps the book club. B) Leo buys a bus ticket. C) Leo loses his homework.
Hint: Look at the last two sentences.
Deutsch, wenn nötig: Was ist das Wichtigste, das Leo tut?
Detail check: Where does Leo take the bag? Answer with a short phrase.
Story language
Stories often use the simple past for finished actions.
| Story word | Meaning in context |
|---|---|
| missed | was too late for something |
| walked | went on foot |
| saw | past of see |
| took | past of take |
| helped | did something useful for someone |
Functional grammar: Use first – then – but – because to connect ideas.
Model: First Leo missed the bus. Then he walked to the library. He was late, but he helped the club.
Reading 2: A blog

Maya’s reading blog
Hi! This week I tried a new reading trick. First I look at the title and picture. Then I read fast for the main idea. I do not stop at every new word. After that, I read again and look for details. This works well for me.
Try: Which reading trick does Maya use first?
Hint: Find the word First.
Deutsch, wenn nötig: Suche den ersten Schritt.
Mini-transfer: Use Maya’s three steps with the next text.
Reading 3: A recommendation

Sam’s book recommendation
I recommend The Secret Treehouse. It is a short adventure story. The chapters are small and the pictures help. I like the two friends because they solve problems together. Try it if you like mystery and teamwork. I give it four stars out of five.
Try: Does Sam like the book? Find two clues.
Useful chunks: I recommend ... I like ... because ... Try it if you like ...
Deutsch, wenn nötig: Suche Meinung + Grund.
Reading 4: Messages

Fictional school messages
Jay: Hi, can we meet at the library at 4? Nia: Yes. I finish football at 3:30. Jay: Great. Please bring the science text. Nia: OK. I will bring it. See you there!
Try: Where do Jay and Nia meet? What does Nia bring?
Hint: Scan for place and object.
Deutsch, wenn nötig: Suche Ort + Sache.
Safety: These are fictional messages. Do not copy real private chats into a public page.
Reading 5: An information text

School Reading Club
Tuesday, 3:30–4:15 Room B12 Bring one short English text you like. You can read alone or with a partner. No recording is needed. Ask Ms King if you need an easier text.
Try: Find the day, time and room.
Hint: Scan. Your eyes do not need to read every sentence.
Deutsch, wenn nötig: Suche gezielt Tag, Uhrzeit und Raum.
Main idea or detail?
| Question | Main idea or detail? |
|---|---|
| What is the text mostly about? | Main idea |
| What time does the club start? | Detail |
| Why does Sam recommend the book? | Detail |
| Is the text a message, story or notice? | Main idea / text type |
Vocabulary in context
Keep the word bank small. Use the words in a sentence.
| Word | Easy meaning | Chunk |
|---|---|---|
| main idea | the most important point | The main idea is ... |
| detail | one small piece of information | One detail is ... |
| message | a short text to another person | The message says ... |
| recommend | say something is good to try | I recommend ... |
| because | gives a reason | I like it because ... |
| information | facts you need | The information says ... |
| before | earlier | Before I read, I look ... |
| after | later | After that, I read again. |
Try: Choose three words. Make one short sentence for each.
Pronunciation
Clear speech is more important than sounding like a native speaker.
Say these words slowly, then in a short chunk:
| Word | Stress help | Chunk |
|---|---|---|
| message | MES-sage | The message says ... |
| recommend | recom-MEND | I recommend it. |
| information | infor-MA-tion | The information says ... |
Try: Say one chunk twice. The second time, speak a little more smoothly.
Optional recording: Record only on your own device if you want to. Keep it private. No upload is needed.
Speaking

Use one of these sentence starters:
| Task | Starter |
|---|---|
| Main idea | The text is mainly about ... |
| Detail | One important detail is ... |
| Opinion | I think ... because ... |
| Recommendation | I recommend ... because ... |
Pair task: Student A reads one short text. Student B asks: What is the main idea? Then switch.
Feedback: If your partner understands your point, your English is working. Clear meaning comes first.
Writing
Write a short recommendation with 4–5 connected sentences.
Writing frame:
I recommend __________. It is about __________. I like it because __________. One good thing is __________. Try it if you like __________.
Word bank: funny – exciting – short – easy to read – interesting – good pictures – friends – mystery – sport – animals
Check: Did you give a reason with because?
Mediation
A German-speaking friend does not understand the “School Reading Club” notice.
Tell your friend in German only the key information: day, time, room, what to bring.
Do not translate every word. Mediation means passing on the information the other person needs.
Functional grammar
Grammar helps you understand and communicate.
| Function | Language | Example |
|---|---|---|
| order | first, then, after that | First I look at the title. Then I read. |
| reason | because | I like it because it is funny. |
| contrast | but | The text is short, but it has many facts. |
| past story | simple past | Leo walked to the library. |
| present fact | simple present | The club meets on Tuesday. |
Not needed here: passive voice and reported speech are not a focus of this course.
Optional E-look ahead only: In When Mia arrived, the club had started, had started happened first. You only need to notice this form here; you do not need to use it.
Feedback and improve
After every reading task, ask yourself:
| Check | If not yet ... |
|---|---|
| Did I find the text type? | Look at layout, title and opening words. |
| Did I find the main idea? | Read the first and last sentence again. |
| Did I find the detail? | Scan for names, places, times or repeated words. |
| Did I guess a word from context? | Read the words before and after it. |
| Can I explain my answer? | Use I think ... because ... |
Mini-transfer
Take a new short English text from your textbook or teacher.
Do only three things:
- Name the text type.
- Write one sentence for the main idea.
- Find two details.
Then use one sentence starter from this course.
Safe media and AI use
Use media to learn, not to replace your work. Any profiles, chats and recommendations you create should be fictional. Do not post private recordings or private messages. Recordings are optional and can stay on your own device.
If you use an AI tool in a school setting, check whether the language level really fits G-level. Compare the feedback with your own text and your teacher’s instructions. Do not let AI replace your own reading or writing.
Self-check: Can do
| I can ... | Yes | Almost | Not yet |
|---|---|---|---|
| find the main idea of a short text. | □ | □ | □ |
| scan for a place, time or name. | □ | □ | □ |
| understand a short message. | □ | □ | □ |
| understand a simple recommendation. | □ | □ | □ |
