Einleitung

E7 G - Give a short recommendation

Mini description: You recommend a book, film, place or activity. You give two short reasons. Keep it clear.

Model: I recommend the city park because it is beautiful and free. You can walk, talk and relax there.

I can ...

I can ... Help
recommend one thing. I recommend ...
give a reason. ... because it is ...
add one useful detail. You can ... there.
react to a recommendation. Sounds good! / Maybe. / Not for me.

Goal: 3–5 connected sentences. Simple, clear English is enough.

Start with media: What can you recommend?

Book: I recommend this book because it is funny.

Film: I recommend this film because it is exciting.

Place: I recommend this place because it is quiet.

Activity: I recommend cycling because it is fun.

Try first: Choose one picture. Say one sentence with I recommend ...

Hint: Use a word you know: funny, exciting, interesting, beautiful, quiet, fun, easy, free.

Deutsch, nur wenn nötig: I recommend ... = Ich empfehle ...; because = weil.

What do you already know?

Complete the chunks aloud:

  1. I recommend ...
  2. It is ...
  3. I like it because ...
  4. You can ...
  5. It is good for ...

Then make one new example. You do not need a perfect accent. Your message should be easy to understand.

Notice: A good short recommendation

A short recommendation answers three questions:

Question Useful chunk Example
What? I recommend ... I recommend the sports centre.
Why? ... because it is ... It is great because it is cheap.
What can you do? You can ... You can swim and play basketball.

Keep it short. One recommendation + two reasons is enough.

Listening and viewing

Oxford Online English: Making Suggestions in English.

First viewing — no transcript: Watch only the short dialogue from about 0:57 to 1:39. Listen for phrases that suggest an activity.

  1. Which activity do the speakers mention?
  2. Do they accept the ideas?
  3. Which words sound friendly?

Second viewing: Watch again. Pause after each suggestion and repeat one short chunk.

Hint: Listen for Why don't we ...?, How about ...? and short positive reactions.

Short transcript excerpt after your listening try: Why don’t we go out somewhere? How about going for a walk? Sounds great. That’s a good idea.

Your task: Change the idea: How about going to the park?

A second media example

Watch only a short part. Stop when you have heard two ways to make a suggestion. You do not need to learn every structure in the video.

For this course, use mainly: I recommend ..., because ..., You can ...

Reading: Four mini recommendations

The people below are fictional. No real private profiles are used.

Mia — a book: I recommend a short comic book. It is funny and easy to read. The pictures help me understand the story.

Ben — a film: I recommend an adventure film. It is exciting, but not too scary. You can watch it with friends.

Ava — a place: I recommend the local library. It is quiet and free. You can read, study or meet a friend there.

Leo — an activity: I recommend cycling. It is fun and good exercise. You can do it with a friend.

Reading check: Find one recommendation that is free, one that uses pictures, and one that you can do with a friend.

Vocabulary in context

Word Easy meaning Example
funny makes you laugh The book is funny.
exciting makes you want to know more The film is exciting.
quiet not loud The library is quiet.
free costs no money The park is free.
useful helps you The app is useful.
relaxing helps you feel calm Walking is relaxing.

Try: Choose two words. Put them after It is ...

Pronunciation: Speak clearly

Say the chunks slowly, then at normal speed:

  1. I recommend ...
  2. because it is ...
  3. You can ...
  4. It is good for ...

Stress the important words: I recomMEND the PARK because it is QUIET.

Feedback: Your listener should understand the thing and the reason. Clear speech is more important than sounding like a native speaker.

Speaking: My recommendation

Work with a partner.

A: What do you recommend?

B: I recommend ______ because it is ______. You can ______.

A: Why do you like it?

B: I like it because ______.

A: Sounds good! / Maybe. / Not for me.

Word bank: book – film – park – library – swimming – cycling – funny – exciting – quiet – free – easy – interesting

Step 1: Read the model.

Step 2: Change two words.

Step 3: Speak without reading every word.

Private option: You may practise alone or with a partner. Any recording is voluntary and should stay private unless you choose otherwise. Do not upload recordings without permission.

Writing: 3–5 sentences

Writing frame:

I recommend __________.

It is __________ because __________.

You can __________.

I like it because __________.

I think it is good for __________.

Mini model: I recommend the library. It is good because it is quiet and free. You can read or study there. I like it because I can find new books.

Check: Did you give one clear recommendation and at least two understandable reasons?

Mediation: Help a friend

Your German-speaking friend says: „Ich suche etwas, das nichts kostet und das ich mit Freunden machen kann.“

Do not translate every word. Give one useful English recommendation.

Start: I recommend ... because ... You can ...

Hint: Think of a park, a walk, a library event or another free activity.

German help if needed: nichts kosten → be free; mit Freunden → with friends.

Functional grammar: because

Use because to give a reason.

I recommend the park because it is beautiful.

I like the film because it is funny.

Simple rule: After because, use a short sentence with a subject and a verb: because it is ..., because you can ...

Try: Join the ideas: I recommend the library. It is quiet. → I recommend the library because it is quiet.

No passive voice or reported speech is needed here. Past perfect is not needed in this course.

Feedback and improve

Give feedback with three checks:

Check Yes / not yet
I understand what you recommend. □ / □
I hear or read at least one reason. □ / □
The sentences are short and clear. □ / □

Then improve one sentence. Do not replace the whole text.

AI note: If you use AI support, check the level and the feedback. Keep your own ideas and your own final sentences. Do not send private data or recordings to an external AI tool without permission.

Mini transfer: New situation

You have 30 seconds. A new student asks: “What can I do after school?”

Give a short recommendation with this pattern:

I recommend ... because ... You can ...

Then use it again for a different situation: “What can I read or watch this weekend?”

Self-check: Can do

I can ... Yes With help Not yet
recommend a book, film, place or activity. □ □ □
give a reason with because. □ □ □
add one detail with You can ... □ □ □
speak clearly enough to be understood. □ □ □
improve one sentence after feedback. □ □ □

Next course: Ask for and give suggestions
