E6 M - Understand conversations with several turns

Einleitung

Mini-Beschreibung: Verstehe kurze Dialoge mit mehreren Sprecherwechseln zu vertrauten Themen und erkenne die Hauptaussage sowie ausgewählte Details.

Dieser aiMOOC ist für Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Klasse 6, M-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg gedacht. Du hörst und liest kurze Gespräche über Schule, Freizeit und Verabredungen. Du arbeitest immer nach dem Lernweg:

Notice → understand → practise → use → feedback → use again

Die Lernsprache ist möglichst verständliches Englisch. Wenn Du Hilfe brauchst, gilt:

Try English first → Hint → German help → example → solution

Du bekommst also nicht automatisch eine vollständige Übersetzung. Ziel ist, dass Du immer mehr selbst aus dem Zusammenhang verstehst.

Kurzer Medien-Einstieg

Watch and listen. Im ersten Durchgang musst Du nicht jedes Wort verstehen. Achte nur darauf: Wer spricht? Wie oft wechseln die Sprecher? Was ist das Hauptthema?

Quick task: Write or say one short sentence: The speakers are talking about ...

Hint

Look at objects, actions and repeated words. They often show the main topic.

Deutsch-Hilfe

Konzentriere Dich zuerst auf das Thema des Gesprächs. Einzelne unbekannte Wörter dürfen offenbleiben.

Example

The speakers are talking about a school bag.

I-can-Ziele

Am Ende kannst Du sagen:

  1. I can follow a short conversation with several turns.
  2. I can identify the main idea without understanding every word.
  3. I can find selected details such as time, place, person or plan.
  4. I can ask for clarification when I miss an important detail.
  5. I can take part in a short dialogue and speak clearly enough to be understood.

Vorwissen-Check

Read the statements. Decide: easy – okay – difficult.

I can ... My check
notice when the speaker changes. easy / okay / difficult
understand familiar words about school and free time. easy / okay / difficult
listen for a time or place. easy / okay / difficult
ask Sorry, can you say that again? easy / okay / difficult

Do not worry about difficult. This is your starting point.

Notice: How conversations work

A conversation is not one long text. Speakers take turns. Each turn can add a new idea, answer a question, correct a detail or make a plan.

Useful signals: Hi, What about you?, Okay, but, then, great, wait, which ...?, see you.

You do not need to translate these signals. Use them to follow the direction of the conversation.

Listening strategy: three passes

Pass Your job
First listen Catch the situation and the main idea.
Second listen Listen for two or three important details.
Third listen Check one difficult point and notice useful phrases.

Important: Do not stop after every unknown word. Keep listening.

Understand: Main dialogue

Situation: Three classmates are making an after-school plan.

E6-M pace for classroom audio: three speakers, clear natural speech, short pauses at speaker changes, about 100–115 words per minute. The teacher or three learners can read the dialogue aloud. A recording is optional and stays private.

Maya: Hi Leo. Are you free after school?

Leo: I think so. I want to go to the sports centre. What about you?

Maya: I need to finish my science poster first.

Sam: Hey, are you talking about this afternoon?

Maya: Yes. Leo wants to go to the sports centre.

Sam: Nice. I can come, but I have football practice at five.

Leo: Then let's meet at the library at three thirty. Maya can finish her poster there.

Maya: Good idea. Can we leave at four fifteen?

Sam: Sure. The bus to the sports centre leaves at four twenty-five.

Leo: Great. Wait, which entrance?

Sam: The one next to the café.

Maya: Okay: library at three thirty, bus at four twenty-five, sports centre. See you later!

First listen: main idea

Try English first: What are the three friends doing?

Hint

Listen for repeated places and planning phrases such as let's meet and can we.

Deutsch-Hilfe

Frage Dich: Geht es vor allem um ein Problem, eine Wegbeschreibung, eine Verabredung oder einen Einkauf?

Solution

They are making a plan for after school.

Second listen: selected details

Find these four details:

Detail Your answer
meeting place ...
meeting time ...
bus time ...
Sam's later activity ...

Hint

Listen for place words, clock times and the word but.

Solution

Meeting place: library. Meeting time: 3:30. Bus time: 4:25. Sam has football practice at five.

Third listen: follow the turns

Write the speaker names in the right order for these actions:

Action Speaker
asks about the entrance ...
says there is football practice ...
repeats the final plan ...
suggests the library ...

Solution

Leo asks about the entrance. Sam says there is football practice. Maya repeats the final plan. Leo suggests the library.

Vocabulary in context

Do not learn a long word list. Learn short chunks that help in real conversations.

Chunk Meaning in this dialogue Use it
Are you free ...? asks about availability Are you free on Friday?
What about you? gives the question back I like tennis. What about you?
I need to ... says what is necessary I need to finish my homework.
Let's meet ... makes a suggestion Let's meet at the library.
Can we ...? asks about a plan Can we leave at four?
Which ...? asks for one missing detail Which entrance?
See you later. closes the conversation Okay. See you later!

Grammar in action

Use grammar to communicate. Do not stop the conversation to name every rule.

Need + verb: I need to finish my poster.

Can + verb: I can come. / Can we leave at four fifteen?

Let's + verb: Let's meet at the library.

Link ideas: and, but, then, because.

Mini-practice: Complete one useful line: I can ..., but I need to ... first.

Practise: Listen to real turn-taking

Video 1: familiar school context

Task: Listen once for the topic. Listen again for two objects and one action. Do not copy a full transcript.

Video 2: a simple making activity

Task: Notice question–answer pairs. Put one finger up each time the speaker changes.

Video 3: another short multi-turn exchange

Task: Catch the main goal, then listen for three materials or objects.

Media rule: These videos are embedded from the official British Council LearnEnglish Kids channel. No copy or re-upload is needed. If a video changes or is unavailable, use the main dialogue in this aiMOOC instead.

Pronunciation: clear beats perfect

Your goal is being understood, not copying one particular accent.

Say these chunks with a clear rhythm:

Are you FREE / after SCHOOL?

Let's MEET / at the LI-brary / at three THIR-ty.

CAN we LEAVE / at four fif-TEEN?

WHICH EN-trance?

Practice in three steps:

  1. Say the chunk slowly and clearly.
  2. Say it again with natural rhythm.
  3. Use it in a new sentence.

Feedback question: Could your partner understand the key words without seeing the text?

Speak: build a short conversation

Work with two or three speakers.

Situation: You want to meet after school.

Use at least four moves:

Move Example
open Hi. Are you free after school?
suggest Let's meet at ...
add a limit I can come, but ...
ask a detail Which entrance? / What time?
confirm Okay: ...
close See you later!

Hint

Keep each turn short. One new idea per turn is enough.

Deutsch-Hilfe

Wenn Du festhängst, nenne zuerst Zeit oder Ort. Danach kannst Du einen einfachen Zusatz mit but oder because machen.

Example

A: Are you free after school?
B: Yes, but I need to go home first.
C: Let's meet at the park at four.
A: Which entrance?
C: The entrance next to the bus stop.
B: Great. See you at four!

Ask for clarification

If you miss one important detail, stay in English first.

Sorry, can you say that again?

What time did you say?

Which place?

Do you mean the library?

These phrases are successful communication, not failure.

Read: a short group chat

Zoe: Are we still meeting for the class project today?

Noah: Yes. I can be at the library at four.

Lina: I can come at four fifteen. My bus is late today.

Zoe: That's okay. Noah and I can start with the pictures.

Noah: Good idea. Lina, can you bring the coloured paper?

Lina: Sure. I have red, blue and green paper.

Zoe: Great. See you in the library!

Reading task: Find the main idea, one time, one reason and one thing Lina brings.

Solution

Main idea: They are planning project work. Time: four / four fifteen. Reason: Lina's bus is late. Lina brings coloured paper.

Write: short output

Write a six-line mini-dialogue with two or three speakers.

Your dialogue needs:

  1. a familiar topic,
  2. at least one speaker change after every line,
  3. one time or place,
  4. one clarification question,
  5. one clear ending.

Keep it short. Six useful lines are better than a long text with copied phrases.

Sprachmittlung: key information only

A German-speaking classmate asks: „Wann und wo treffen sie sich, und was passiert danach?“

Give the key information from the main dialogue in two or three German sentences. Do not translate every line.

Hint

Look for time, place and next activity.

Example solution

Die drei treffen sich um 15:30 Uhr in der Bibliothek. Um 16:25 Uhr nehmen sie den Bus zum Sportzentrum. Sam hat später um 17 Uhr Fußballtraining.

Feedback

After speaking or writing, use this short feedback loop:

Check Feedback sentence
main idea is clear I understood that you want to ...
important detail is clear I heard the time/place ...
one point is unclear Can you say the ... again?
speech is understandable Your key words were clear.
next step Next time, add one more detail.

Rule: Verständlichkeit vor Akzentfreiheit. Correct only a small number of useful points at one time.

Use again: new situation

Situation: Three classmates prepare a school display.

Nora: Have you got the poster?

Ben: Yes, it's in my folder.

Ava: Great. We need one more marker.

Nora: I have a blue one, but not a black one.

Ben: The art room has markers. Shall I get one?

Ava: Yes, please. We start at two.

Ben: Okay. Where do we meet after lunch?

Nora: At the hall entrance, next to the stairs.

Ava: Perfect. See you at quarter to two.

Ben: See you.

Use again task: First say the main idea. Then find three details. Finally change one detail and perform the dialogue again.

Wiederholung

One-minute recap:

If you want to ... Try ...
catch the main idea listen for topic words and repeated ideas
find details listen for time, place, person, reason or object
follow turns notice questions, answers and speaker changes
repair understanding ask Can you say that again?
remember the plan repeat the key information at the end

Can-do-Check

Tick what is true now.

  1. □ I can understand the main idea of a short multi-turn conversation.
  2. □ I can find at least three selected details.
  3. □ I can follow who says what.
  4. □ I can ask for repetition or clarification.
  5. □ I can speak in short connected turns with a partner.
  6. □ I can write a short dialogue independently.
  7. □ I know that I do not need to understand every word.

If you tick fewer than four boxes, repeat the main dialogue and one video task. Then try the Can-do-Check again.

Sicher und selbstständig lernen

Use fictional names and invented details in your own dialogues. Audio or video recording is voluntary. If you record, keep the file private unless everyone involved has clearly agreed to share it. No upload is required for this aiMOOC.

You do not need an external AI tool. If you choose to use AI elsewhere, check its suggestions, compare them with your own language and write the final version yourself. Do not send personal data, private recordings or classmates' work to an external service without permission.
