Reading gets easier when you use more than words. Headings, pictures, maps and captions can help you find the topic before you read every sentence. In this E6-M course, you read a short information text about Bristol and practise how to use headings and visual clues.

Before reading: Use visual clues
A map is also a clue. Find the water, the railway station and one place you would like to visit.
Think: What kind of place is Bristol: a village, a city, a mountain or a desert?

Bristol – a city by the water
Where is it?
Bristol is a city in the south-west of England. It lies on the River Avon. The harbour is close to the city centre.
What can you see?
At the harbour, you can see boats, bridges and old dock buildings. The historic ship SS Great Britain is there, too. Another famous sight is the Clifton Suspension Bridge.
What can you do?
You can walk by the water, visit a museum or look at the city from different viewpoints. A map and the headings help you find information quickly.

Notice: How the text helps you
The text has three short headings: Where is it?, What can you see? and What can you do? Before you read a section, the heading tells you what kind of information to expect. The photos and map give extra clues.
Accuracy focus: In a short information text, use simple present forms and useful chunks such as It is ..., You can ... and There is/There are ....
Pronunciation: Clear is the goal
Listen again to Bristol. Then say these chunks slowly and clearly: Bristol, the harbour, the bridge, the city centre, You can visit ...
Tip: Speak in short sense groups. Do not rush. Being understandable is more important than copying an accent.

Write four to six sentences about a place you know. It may be a real place or a fictional one. Add one short heading.
Use at least two: There is/There are ..., You can ..., It is ..., I like ... because ...
