Einleitung
Learn important simple-past forms in short stories. You meet the verbs in pictures, listening and mini-stories – not in one long verb list.

Mini-description: Notice → understand → practise → use → feedback → use again.

Look at the picture. What happened yesterday?
Try English first: Say one short sentence.
Hint: Start with Yesterday ...
German help: yesterday = gestern; school bag = Schultasche
Example: Yesterday I had my school bag.
Solution idea: Yesterday I went to school.
I can ...
- I can understand short stories about yesterday.
- I can notice important irregular past forms.
- I can say 3–5 short sentences in the simple past.
- I can write a short mini-story with help.
- I can listen for key words such as went, saw, had, took and ate.
Safe learning
Use only fictional names and fictional details in tasks. Record your voice only if you want to. Keep recordings private unless your teacher gives a clear safe place for them. Do not upload personal data without permission. This course does not ask you to send work to an external AI service. If you use AI somewhere else, check the result and write the final text in your own words. Clear English is more important than a perfect accent.
Media start: What happened?
Look, listen and guess.

Guess: Yesterday Lena ... to the bus stop.
Hint: go → ?
German help: Sie ging zur Bushaltestelle.

Hint: Listen for actions in the past.
German help: Achte auf Wörter für abgeschlossene Handlungen.
Example: went tells you about go in the past.
Solution check: You may hear several regular and irregular simple-past forms. Focus only on forms you already know.
Vorwissen-Check
Do these three quick checks before you study.
A. Choose: Yesterday I go / went to school.
B. Choose: Mia see / saw her friend.

Try English first.
Hint: Look for Yesterday and think: past.
German help: Für eine Handlung in der Vergangenheit brauchst Du hier die Vergangenheitsform.

Solution: A went · B saw · C had
If you got one or two right, that is enough to start.
Notice: Mini-stories

Hint: Find the word after found.
German help: found = fand
Example: Alex found ...
Solution: Alex found a school bag.
Understand: The useful verbs
You do not need a long list. Learn these forms inside the stories.
| Today / basic form | Yesterday / simple past | Mini-context |
|---|---|---|
| go | went | Lena went to the bus stop. |
| have | had | Lena had breakfast. |
| see | saw | Mia saw Ben. |
| get | got | Lena got on the bus. |
| eat | ate | Mia ate a sandwich. |
| find | found | Alex found a bag. |
| take | took | Alex took the bag to Mia. |
| say | said | Mia said, “Thank you!” |
Notice: These verbs are irregular. Their past forms do not simply end in -ed.
Keep it simple: subject + past form + rest.
Example: Alex + found + a bag.
Do not try to learn every irregular verb today. Learn these eight in useful sentences.
Audio: hear one key form
Listen to ate. Then say the whole sentence: Mia ate a sandwich.
Listen to go. Then change it yourself to the past form went.
Listen to take. Then say the past form took.
Pronunciation: clear before perfect
Say these short chunks. Speak slowly first.
- went to school
- saw my friend
- had lunch
- took the bag
- ate a sandwich
- said thank you
Your goal is easy-to-understand English. You do not need to copy one special accent.
Mini echo: A partner or teacher says one chunk. You repeat it once. Then use it in a full sentence.
Example: saw my friend → Yesterday I saw my friend.
Optional listening lesson
The next video explains irregular simple-past verbs in a short situation. Use it as listening practice. Pause when you need time.
Listening focus: Do not copy every verb. Write down only three past forms you recognise.

Which sentence is true?

Example: Yesterday I went to school. I saw a friend. I had lunch.
Solution: There are many correct answers. Check that your past forms fit your sentence.
Write: Four-sentence mini-story
Write four short sentences about a fictional person.
Starter frame:
Yesterday ______ went to ______.
______ saw ______.
______ had / ate ______.
Then ______ said, “______.”
Hint: Use only words you know.

Solution check: Four short sentences, past forms, clear order.
Sprachmittlung mini
Your English-speaking classmate asks what happened. You have this German note:
Gestern fand Jo eine Schultasche. Jo brachte die Tasche zu Mia. Mia sagte Danke.
Tell only the important information in simple English. You do not need a word-for-word translation.
Hint: Use found, took and said.
German help: Gib nur die Kerninformation weiter.
Example start: Yesterday Jo found ...
Solution idea: Yesterday Jo found a school bag. Jo took it to Mia. Mia said thank you.
Feedback
Use this short feedback routine after speaking or writing.
- Meaning first: Can I understand what happened?
- Past form: Did I use the right irregular form?
- Short sentences: Are my sentences easy to follow?
- One improvement: Change only one important mistake.
Three key error targets:
I went to school. Not: I goed to school.
I saw my friend. Not: I seed my friend.
Did you go? Not: Did you went?
Feedback sentence starters:
I understood ...
One good past form is ...
Check this verb: ...
Try this sentence again: ...
Use again
Retell one mini-story with one change.
Example:
Original: Lena went to the bus stop.
Change: Lena went to the park.
Then keep two more past forms:
Lena saw a friend. Lena had lunch.
This second use helps the forms stay in your memory.
