E6 G - Follow the story – Handlung verstehen

Mini-description: Follow a short story. Put the main events in the right order. Check your understanding with pictures, sounds, reading and speaking.

Target group: English as a first foreign language, Year 6, Baden-Württemberg, G level.

Learning path: Notice → understand → practise → use → feedback → use again.

Einleitung

Stories are easier when you find the main events. You do not need every word. Look for people, places, actions and sequence words.

Rule for this course: Try English first → Hint → German help → example → solution.

Quick look: What can you see? Say three easy English words.

Hint: Think of people, place and transport.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Nenne zuerst nur drei Dinge auf Englisch. Ein einzelnes Wort reicht.

Example: kids – bus stop – bags

I can ...

  1. I can find the main events in a short story.
  2. I can put events in the right order.
  3. I can use first, then, next and finally.
  4. I can understand key words in pictures and short audio clips.
  5. I can tell a short story with sentence starters.

Vorwissen-Check

Say or write one short answer.

  1. What is a story?
  2. What can happen first?
  3. What can happen finally?
  4. Name one word for a place in a story.
  5. Name one word for an action in a story.

Need help? Eine Handlung ist eine Folge von Ereignissen. Du musst nicht jedes Detail verstehen.

Media start: Look and listen

Look: What is this?

Try English first: It is a ...

Hint: You take books to school in it.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Schultasche / Rucksack.

Solution: It is a backpack.

Now listen.

What do you hear? Say one word.

Solution: rain

Listen to another sound.

Is this the same sound? No. This is thunder.

The story: The red backpack

Read in small steps. Do not translate every sentence.

Scene 1

It was Friday afternoon. Mia waited at the bus stop. Her red backpack was on the bench.

Key idea: Mia waited for the bus.

Scene 2

Then it started to rain. Mia moved under the shelter. A small dog came near her.

Key idea: It rained and a dog came.

Scene 3

The bus arrived. Mia got on quickly. The dog barked.

Key idea: Mia got on the bus.

Scene 4

On the bus, Mia looked down.

“Oh no! My backpack!”

The backpack was not with her.

Key idea: Mia noticed her backpack was missing.

Scene 5

Mia got off at the next stop. She walked back in the rain.

Key idea: Mia went back.

Scene 6

Finally, Mia saw the red backpack on the bench. The dog was next to it.

“Good dog!” Mia said. She smiled and took her backpack.

Key idea: Mia found her backpack.

Understand the story

Main events:

Sequence word Main event
First Mia waited at the bus stop.
Then It started to rain.
Next Mia got on the bus.
After that Mia noticed the backpack was missing.
Then Mia walked back.
Finally Mia found the backpack.

Important: A main event changes the story. A small detail gives extra information.

Example: “It was Friday” is a detail. “Mia found the backpack” is a main event.

Picture check

What place is important at the beginning and the end?

Try English first: The ...

Hint: People wait for a bus there.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Bushaltestelle.

Solution: The bus stop.

Audio check

Listen to the three sounds.

Which sound is clearly part of Mia’s story?

Hint: Read Scene 2 again.

Solution: rain

Vocabulary in context

Word Easy English German help
backpack a bag for school things Rucksack
bus stop a place to wait for a bus Bushaltestelle
bench a long seat Bank
rain water from the sky Regen
bark a dog sound bellen
missing not there fehlt
go back return zurückgehen
finally at the end schließlich

Use words in a sentence, not as a long word list.

Notice the language

Look at these story verbs:

waited – started – moved – arrived – looked – walked

Some verbs are different:

come → came

get → got

see → saw

find → found

You use these forms to tell finished story events.

Do not learn a big grammar table here. Use the verbs in the story.

Mini practice

Complete the sentences.

  1. First, Mia waited at the bus stop.
  2. Then it started to rain.
  3. Next, Mia got on the bus.
  4. Finally, she found her backpack.

Pronunciation

Say the short chunks slowly.

wait at the bus stop

red backpack

walked back

finally found it

Clap the strong words. Speak clearly. You do not need a perfect accent.

Optional private recording: You may record yourself on your own device. Do not upload your voice unless your teacher clearly asks and you agree.

Speaking

Tell the story in 4–6 short sentences.

Sentence starters:

Step Starter
Start First, Mia ...
Change Then ...
Problem Next, she ...
Return After that, she ...
End Finally, ...

Word bank: bus stop – backpack – rain – dog – bus – missing – back – found

Hint: One sentence for one main event.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Erzähle nur die Hauptereignisse. Kleine Details kannst Du weglassen.

Example: First, Mia waited at the bus stop. Then it started to rain.

Reading

Read this short message.

“Hi Ben, I found my backpack. It was still at the bus stop. The little dog was next to it. I am home now. Mia”

Answer in short English.

  1. What did Mia find?
  2. Where was it?
  3. What was next to it?

Solutions: her backpack – at the bus stop – the dog

Short writing

Write a 4-sentence story report.

Starter frame:

First, ...

Then, ...

Next, ...

Finally, ...

Word bank: waited – rained – got on – missing – walked back – found

Check: Is the order clear? Are the sentences short? Can a classmate understand them?

Sprachmittlung

Your German-speaking classmate asks: “Was ist das Problem in der Geschichte?”

Answer in simple German. Do not translate every sentence.

Hint: Say only the important problem and solution.

Example: Mia vergisst ihren Rucksack an der Bushaltestelle. Sie geht zurück und findet ihn dort wieder.

Video extension: Follow another story

Watch an official British Council LearnEnglish Kids story. First watch for the big idea. Then watch again and look for the order of places. The video is embedded; no transcript is copied here.

Task: Which place comes first in the journey: jungle, desert or island?

Hint: Watch only the first part again.

Solution: jungle

Extra: Put these three places in order: jungle – desert – island.

Solution: jungle – desert – island

Gestufte Hilfe

Use only as much help as you need.

Step Help
Try English first Read or listen once. Mark one key word.
Hint Look for who, where and what happened.
German help Frage Dich: Wer? Wo? Was passiert?
Example First, Mia waited at the bus stop.
Solution Check only after your own try.

Feedback

Use this simple feedback after speaking or writing.

Two stars and one next step:

  1. One thing that is clear: “I understand ...”
  2. One good sequence word: “You used ...”
  3. One next step: “Add ...”

Keep feedback kind and specific.

Wiederholung

Tell the story again, but this time use only four sentences.

Goal: Keep the main events. Remove small details.

Then tell it one more time without looking at the full story.
