Case 1: Routine → simple present

Use the simple present for routines and things that happen again and again.

Example: Leo gets up at seven on school days. He walks to school.

Clues: every day · usually · often · sometimes · on Mondays

Form: I/you/we/they play. He/she/it plays.

Detective question: Does it happen regularly?

Case 2: Happening now → present progressive

Use the present progressive for an action happening now.

Example: Look! Ava is playing football now. Her friend is watching.

Clues: now · right now · at the moment · look! · listen!

Form: am/is/are + verb-ing: I am reading. She is reading. They are reading.

Listen – pause – repeat: Say one sentence from the video. Then change the person: I am ... → She is ...

Case 3: Meaning first

Signal words help, but meaning decides.

Routine: Jay writes in his notebook after English lessons.

Now: Jay is writing a message right now.

Ask two questions:

Is this a routine?
Is the action happening now?

Then give a reason: I choose present progressive because the action is happening now. The clue is right now.

Tiny form check

Accuracy tip: In the simple present, remember the -s with he/she/it. In the present progressive, do not forget am/is/are.

Listen and compare

Use the video three times:

First listen: show one finger for routine, two fingers for now.
Second listen: find one time clue.
Third listen: pause and repeat two sentences.

Speak clearly. Your accent does not have to sound like somebody else's.

Short dialogue

Nora: What do you do after school?

Sam: I usually play basketball.

Nora: What are you doing now?

Sam: I'm waiting for the bus.

Detective answer: usually play = routine; am waiting now = happening now.

Picture detective

Say two sentences about the picture:

Now sentence: The student is ...
Routine sentence: The student usually ...

Then explain one choice with because.

No signal word: Write one sentence where the context, not a clear signal word, shows that an action is happening now. Explain your reasoning.
Same verb, new meaning: Use the same verb in one simple present sentence and one present progressive sentence. Change the context so both sentences make sense.
