E10 M - Mediation with follow-up questions
E10 M - Mediation with follow-up questions
Mini-Beschreibung: Vermittle in einer simulierten zweisprachigen Unterhaltung Informationen, frage bei fehlenden Angaben gezielt nach und reagiere auf clarification requests. Du arbeitest auf Klasse 10, M-Niveau, B1-orientiert und vermittelst sinngemäß statt vollständig zu übersetzen.

Media warm-up – English first: Look at the speech bubbles. What can make a three-person conversation difficult when two people do not share the same language? Name two possible misunderstandings before you watch the video.
Viewing mission: Watch once for the situation. Watch a second time and note three ways of asking for missing or unclear information. Do not write a transcript.

English first – I can
After this course, you can:
- mediate the relevant message without translating every word.
- ask focused follow-up questions when a date, place, price, reason or condition is missing.
- respond when someone asks you to clarify, repeat or explain.
- keep a bilingual conversation moving for several minutes with little support.
- choose a suitable register for a friend, customer, visitor, teacher or staff member.
- check your own message for relevance, accuracy, intelligibility and source reliability.
Vorwissen aktivieren
Answer in English first. Use German only if you need it to solve a mediation problem.
- Vorwissen – Mediation: What is the difference between translate and mediate?
- Vorwissen – Questions: Which polite question forms with could, would or a question word do you already use?
- Vorwissen – Repair strategies: What can you do if you know the idea but not one English word?
Understand – Listening and viewing

Listening/Viewing, B1 mode: Use natural playback speed. First listen for the problem and solution. On the second viewing, write only keywords for who needs what, what information is missing, and how the speaker asks for help. On a third viewing, check one detail you were unsure about.
Quick response: Say a 20–30 second summary in English. Do not retell everything. Keep only the information a partner would need to act.
Respond – Immediate clarification
In a real conversation, you do not always have complete information. React before you guess.
| Situation | Useful response |
|---|---|
| You did not hear it | Sorry, could you say that again? |
| A key detail is missing | Which date do you mean? |
| A word or idea is unclear | What do you mean by ...? |
| You want to check your understanding | Let me check: do you mean ...? |
| You need spelling | Could you spell that, please? |
| The other person asks you to clarify | Sure. What I mean is ... |
E10-M conversation length: In practice rounds, keep the whole three-person scene to about 3–4 minutes. Individual turns are usually one to three sentences. A mediation chunk should normally be two to five connected sentences, followed by a check or follow-up question if needed. Do not produce a full translation unless the task explicitly requires it.
Analyse – Read, select, mediate

Fictional source message in German:
„Der Regionalzug nach Bristol fährt heute wegen Bauarbeiten nicht um 16:20 Uhr, sondern um 16:48 Uhr von Gleis 7. Das bereits gekaufte Ticket bleibt gültig. Wer den Anschluss um 17:10 Uhr erreichen muss, soll sich vor der Fahrt am Schalter melden. Ob Fahrräder mitgenommen werden können, steht in dieser Nachricht nicht.“
Task: You are helping an English-speaking visitor. Decide what is relevant for a person who already has a ticket and needs the 17:10 connection. Mediate the message in English. Then ask one follow-up question about the missing bicycle information instead of inventing an answer.
Think like a mediator:
- Purpose: What does the person need to do next?
- Recipient: What does this person already know?
- Selection: Which information changes the next action?
- Clarification: What is missing?
- Accuracy: Which facts must stay exact?
Kontextwortschatz
| English | Meaning in this course | Example use |
|---|---|---|
| relevant | für den Zweck wichtig | The delay is relevant for the connection. |
| to clarify | etwas genauer klären | Could you clarify the time? |
| to confirm | eine Information bestätigen | Can you confirm the platform? |
| one-way / return | einfache Fahrt / Hin- und Rückfahrt | Do you need a one-way or a return ticket? |
| available | verfügbar | Is bike space available? |
| deadline | Frist | What is the deadline? |
| refund | Rückerstattung | Can they get a refund? |
| requirement | Voraussetzung / Anforderung | Is ID a requirement? |
| to paraphrase | mit anderen Worten wiedergeben | I’ll paraphrase the main point. |
| reliable source | verlässliche Quelle | Check the information against a reliable source. |
Communicate – Mediation with follow-up questions

Core strategy: SELECT → MEDIATE → CHECK → ASK → REACT.
| Move | What you do | Language |
|---|---|---|
| SELECT | Choose only what the listener needs. | The important point is ... |
| MEDIATE | Explain the meaning in your own words. | They are saying that ... |
| CHECK | Make sure you understood correctly. | Let me check if I understood this correctly. |
| ASK | Request one missing detail. | Could you tell me which ...? |
| REACT | Answer a clarification request. | Yes. What I mean is ... |
Rule: If a detail is unknown, say that it is unknown and ask. Never fill the gap with a guess.
Functional grammar – useful, not isolated
Polite requests with modal verbs: Could you repeat that? and Would you mind explaining that? make requests less direct.
Indirect questions: After an opening such as Could you tell me ..., use statement word order: Could you tell me where the bus leaves? not Could you tell me where does the bus leave?
Checking meaning: Do you mean that the ticket is still valid? and So, if I understood you correctly, ... help prevent wrong mediation.
Conditionals for consequences: If the connection is important, you should ask at the counter before you travel. Use the conditional only when the condition is supported by the source or clearly marked as advice.
Pronunciation and intelligibility
Your goal is clear communication, not accent-free speech. Stress key information such as dates, times, prices and negations. Slow down briefly for names and numbers. Use natural sentence rhythm instead of pronouncing every word equally strongly. A checking question can use rising intonation, but meaning and clarity are more important than copying one accent.
Micro-practice: Say these aloud once slowly and once at natural speed: Could you clarify the date, please? – Let me check: did you say fifteen or fifty? – What I mean is that the ticket is still valid.
More natural help language
Listening focus: Identify how the speaker makes a request polite. Then adapt one phrase so it fits a station, visitor centre or school exchange situation.
Speaking – Simulated bilingual conversation

Work in threes. All people and details are fictional.
| Role | Information | Hidden challenge |
|---|---|---|
| German-speaking visitor | Du möchtest am Samstag mit Zug und Fahrrad zu einem Jugendfestival fahren. Dein Budget liegt bei 25 Euro. | Sage zunächst nicht, ob du ein Hin- und Rückticket brauchst. |
| English-speaking staff member | The return fare is £21. Bike spaces must be reserved. The last train back is at 21:40. | Ask one clarification question if the mediator says something vague. |
| Mediator | Keep the exchange moving between German and English. | Do not invent the missing ticket type. Ask before you mediate the price. |
Target: 3–4 minutes, no script, at least two follow-up questions, one response to a clarification request and one short confirmation at the end.
Challenge round: The staff member adds one unexpected but realistic detail. The mediator reacts spontaneously and checks whether it matters to the visitor.
Writing – Short mediation, formal and informal

Fictional situation: A German youth centre sends this note: „Für den internationalen Kochabend am Freitag müssen Allergien bis Mittwoch, 18 Uhr, per E-Mail gemeldet werden. Zutatenlisten liegen vor Ort aus. Wer eine vegane Mahlzeit braucht, soll dies ebenfalls vorher angeben. Ob glutenfreies Brot angeboten wird, ist noch nicht bestätigt.“
Write a 100–140 word English message for an exchange student. Include only information needed for taking part. Add one polite question about the gluten-free bread. Do not translate sentence by sentence.
Register switch: Rewrite only the opening and closing once as an informal message to a friend and once as a short formal email to a coordinator. Keep the factual core unchanged.
Feedback – Make meaning visible
Give feedback on communication, not on personality or accent. Use this sequence:
- Feedback – Meaning: One thing that was immediately clear.
- Feedback – Missing information: One detail that still needs clarification.
- Feedback – Interaction: One place where a follow-up question kept the conversation going.
- Feedback – Language: One phrase that could be more natural or precise.
- Feedback – Next move: One specific revision for the next round.
| Check | Yes / not yet |
|---|---|
| Relevant information selected | |
| Facts kept accurate | |
| Missing detail asked for | |
| Clarification request answered | |
| Register fits the listener | |
| Message understandable at natural pace |
Revise – Error analysis
Correct the strategy, not just the sentence.
| Problem | Better move |
|---|---|
| You translate every sentence. | Select the listener’s purpose and shorten. |
| You do not know a detail and guess. | State the gap and ask a follow-up question. |
| You repeat the same unclear phrase. | Paraphrase with simpler words or an example. |
| You ignore a clarification request. | Stop, answer it, then continue. |
| You sound too direct in a formal situation. | Use a polite modal question and suitable opening. |
| You focus on accent more than meaning. | Prioritise key words, numbers and intelligibility. |
| You use cultural clichés as explanations. | Explain the concrete situation instead of generalising about groups. |
Revision sprint: Repeat the same role-play for two minutes. Change only two things: one improved follow-up question and one clearer mediation chunk.
Transfer – New situation, less support
Imagine you are helping at a fictional international youth hostel. A German notice says that check-in after 22:00 is possible only after prior contact, breakfast is included from 07:00 to 09:30, and lockers require a refundable 10-euro deposit. An English-speaking guest asks whether towels are included; the notice does not say.
Your transfer task: Mediate the relevant information, ask one follow-up question about towels, respond to one clarification request about the deposit and finish with a short confirmation of the guest’s next step.
Responsible media, recording and AI use
Use only fictional profiles, applications and personal details in practice. Audio or video recordings are voluntary and should stay private unless everyone involved has explicitly agreed to another use. Do not upload recordings, names, application data or classmates’ work without permission. Do not send such material to external AI services without explicit permission and a clear school-approved purpose.
If you use AI-generated information, check it against reliable sources. Keep your own wording and drafts visible so that your learning process remains yours. In mediation, a plausible-sounding invented detail is still wrong.

Offene Aufgaben
Leicht
