ABI LF - Reading and summary under time pressure
ABI LF - Reading and summary under time pressure

Reading under pressure is not “reading faster at all costs”. It is task-driven selection: understand the task, locate the relevant aspect, separate key points from examples, and write a concise summary in your own words.
Mini-description: Work with unfamiliar, demanding English texts under exam conditions. Train task-driven reading and aspect-based summary for the Leistungsfach in Baden-Württemberg. English comes first; German help is a last scaffold, not the default.
Einleitung
This aiMOOC targets advanced learners in the fortgeführte Fremdsprache Englisch, Kursstufe Baden-Württemberg, Leistungsfach. The core routine is:
TASK → ASPECT → EVIDENCE → COMPRESS → CHECK
You work with unfamiliar texts, legal open media and short self-written practice texts. No full compulsory literary text and no unauthorised film sequence is reproduced. You analyse and write independently.

Practice timer, not an official sub-time: For a 25-minute drill, try 2 minutes task decoding, 7 minutes selective reading, 5 minutes aspect notes, 8 minutes writing and 3 minutes checking. In the real exam, allocate time according to the complete task set.
I-can goals
- Reading: I can decode an operator and read only for the requested aspect.
- Summary: I can select, condense and paraphrase key points without drifting into analysis.
- Analysis: I can distinguish content summary from evidence-based analysis of form, language and communicative strategies.
- Exam management: I can work with a timer, prioritise high-value information and leave time for a final task check.
- Source literacy: I can verify claims, sources and AI-assisted suggestions instead of accepting them automatically.
Vorwissen aktivieren
Before reading, answer in English: What does the task ask me to do, which aspect matters, and what must I ignore? Then predict three lexical fields that may appear. Do not translate the text sentence by sentence.
Medien-Einstieg: skim before you scan
The British Council video distinguishes skimming for gist from scanning for targeted information. In an aspect-based summary, use both: skim once to build the map, then scan for evidence relevant to the task.
Abi-Check Baden-Württemberg 2027
Checked against the current official 2027 documents available in October 2026. The Ministry overview lists the 2027 Facherlass and assessment guidelines.
For the Leistungsfach Englisch 2027, the official Facherlass, Stand 09.09.2025 states: the written examination has about 255 minutes including selection time. Part I is listening comprehension at about 30 minutes; after a 15-minute break, Part II writing has 225 minutes. Permitted aids include an English monolingual dictionary, an English-German/German-English bilingual dictionary and a German spelling reference.
In Part II, candidates choose between a literary and a non-literary text-based task. The reading-comprehension subsection explicitly requires an aspect-based summary; the next subsection is analysis. The two products must not be mixed. In Leistungsfach coursework, the 2027 Facherlass requires all three Anforderungsbereiche and gives stronger emphasis to AFB II and III than to AFB I.
According to the official Beurteilungs- und Korrekturrichtlinien, Stand 07.07.2025, the overall result of this examination is weighted 20% listening, 55% writing and 25% communication examination. The communication examination is conducted orally: 15 minutes preparation, about 5 minutes monologic speaking and about 10 minutes dialogic speaking; it can be an individual or tandem format.
Important distinction: This aiMOOC mainly trains the written reading-and-summary process. Speaking transfer below supports the communication examination, but a spoken discussion is not the same task as an aspect-based written summary.
The 2027 Schwerpunkt is On the Move: Migration and Cross-Cultural Encounters; the official document also names USA- and UK-related thematic fields. For exact compulsory works and current updates, use the official Facherlass rather than secondary checklists.
Reading under time pressure

Step 1: Decode the task first
Underline the operator, box the aspect and circle any scope limit. Example: “Summarise the author's concerns about urban surveillance.” Your target is not “the whole article”; your target is one aspect.
The Landesbildungsserver's Summary material treats summarise / sum up as condensing the main points in relatively few words.
Step 2: Build an aspect grid
Create three columns:
| Relevant point | Evidence in the source | Your compressed wording |
|---|---|---|
| Main claim about the aspect | keyword, line reference or brief note | neutral paraphrase |
| Second distinct point | evidence note | neutral paraphrase |
| Qualification or consequence | evidence note | neutral paraphrase |
Do not copy full sentences into the grid. Notes should be shorter than the source and already move toward paraphrase.

Step 3: Read selectively
Use a two-pass method. First pass: topic, thesis, paragraph functions. Second pass: only the required aspect. Mark K for key point, E for example, D for detail and X for irrelevant material. Usually only K survives into the summary; E and D are included only when they are essential to the requested aspect.
Step 4: Resolve vocabulary in the right order

When a word blocks understanding, use this hierarchy:
- Context: infer from contrast, cause-effect, examples and co-text.
- Word formation: inspect prefix, root, suffix and part of speech.
- Visualisation: sketch the relationship or process.
- English explanation: define the idea in simple English.
- Dictionary: check an English definition and usage.
- German help: use brief German support only if the meaning is still uncertain.

Step 5: Write the aspect-based summary
A strong summary is selective, neutral, coherent and independent in wording. Start directly with the requested aspect. Group related points logically instead of following every paragraph mechanically. Avoid quotations unless the task specifically requires them.
Compression test: If a sentence contains an example, a statistic and a quotation, ask which underlying point they support. Write that point, not the full evidence chain.
Step 6: Check before moving on
Use the 4C check: Coverage of the aspect, Conciseness, Coherence, Correctness. Then compare every sentence with the task wording. Delete relevant-looking information that does not answer the specified aspect.
Listening / Viewing

Listening under pressure uses the same logic: task first, prediction, selective notes, then verification. For practice, use short public or teacher-provided clips and write only keywords. Do not transcribe.
For viewing, separate what is shown from what is claimed. In exam-like material, visuals may support or complicate a written text; describe only features that matter for the assigned aspect.
Analysis
Summary asks: What does the text say about the aspect? Analysis asks: How does the text create meaning or effect?
For literary texts, typical analytical dimensions include use of language and narrative techniques. For non-literary texts, typical dimensions include structure, use of language and communicative strategies. In the 2027 Facherlass, analysis is explicitly text-based and linked to named content, linguistic or formal aspects.
| Product | Main question | Evidence | Typical mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summary | What is relevant? | content selection | adding interpretation |
| Analysis | How is meaning shaped? | precise textual evidence | listing devices without effect |
| Comment / creative task | What position or product is required? | material + reasoning | ignoring target text type |
Speaking
Use the same task-control routine for oral work: decode the prompt, organise two or three points, connect evidence, then respond interactively. For communication-practice, record yourself only if you want to. Keep recordings private unless a teacher explicitly asks for sharing.
60-second drill: State the issue, give two connected points, qualify one point and conclude. Then repeat with fewer fillers and clearer signposting.
Writing

For the summary, prefer precise verbs such as argues, explains, contrasts, identifies, warns, suggests when they accurately reflect the source. Avoid empty openings such as “In this text the author talks about...”.
For later writing tasks, separate source-bound content from your own evaluation. If you use AI for practice, label the assistance, check every factual claim and source, and rewrite independently. AI is not a substitute for your own exam essay.
Mediation as transfer
Mediation is useful transfer training because it also requires selection for a purpose and audience. However, do not turn an aspect-based summary into translation. Mediation changes language and often audience; summary condenses the source for the assigned aspect.
Hilfen und Differenzierung
Support should change the scaffolding, not lower the intellectual target.
| Track | Reading material | Support | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Support | shorter unfamiliar C1-leaning passage | aspect grid + paragraph functions | concise summary with checklist |
| LF standard | complex unfamiliar literary or non-literary text | task marks + sparse glossary | independent aspect summary + analysis |
| Stretch | longer or multi-material input | minimal scaffolding | synthesis, qualification and transfer |
Pace option: Repeat the same task once untimed and once timed. Compare what improved or disappeared. Increase text complexity before reducing support further.
Feedback and error analysis
After each timed task, classify only the three errors with the greatest impact:
- Task fulfilment: missed aspect, wrong scope or incomplete coverage.
- Selection and coherence: repetition, weak grouping or irrelevant detail.
- Language control: copying, imprecise paraphrase or grammar that changes meaning.
Then write one corrective rule for the next task, for example: “I will not write until each note is linked to the requested aspect.”
Source and AI check
Use lateral checking for claims you did not generate yourself. Open the source, identify who is responsible for it, compare with an independent reliable source and inspect whether the evidence really supports the claim.
Use fictional names and non-identifying data in practice tasks. No task in this aiMOOC requires uploading personal files, recordings or texts to an external AI service.
Transfer
Apply the method to a new topic without changing the routine. The content may be unfamiliar; the workflow should remain familiar. After two practice rounds, remove one scaffold: first the glossary, then the grid, then the suggested timing.
