Einleitung

AI for focused writing feedback means: You write first. AI gives narrow feedback. You decide, verify and revise. In diesem aiMOOC trainierst Du für die fortgeführte Fremdsprache Englisch in der Kursstufe Baden-Württemberg. Du übst, enge Feedbackaufträge zu thesis, cohesion, register und recurring errors zu formulieren. Die KI soll keinen Ersatzaufsatz und keinen vollständigen Ersatzabsatz verfassen.

Media starter – Look, think, connect: What can an AI symbol show – and what can it not show about the quality of a text? Name two decisions that must remain with the writer.

I-can goals

  1. I can formulate one precise feedback focus instead of asking for a rewrite.
  2. I can check whether feedback fits my task, evidence, audience and intended register.
  3. I can revise my own thesis, paragraph links and recurring language errors.
  4. I can explain why I accepted, changed or rejected a piece of AI feedback.
  5. I can verify AI claims and source references before using them.

Medien-Einstieg: Revision is visible

Viewing task: Identify three visible traces of revision. Then complete the sentence: Revision is not replacing a text; revision is ... Compare your answer with a partner.

Transfer: Human writers have revised drafts long before generative AI. Point to one similarity and one difference between handwritten revision and AI-supported feedback.

Abi-Check – Stand 03.10.2026

Safety, privacy and authorship

Use only an AI tool approved for your learning setting. No one must open an external AI service for this course. If no approved tool is available, use the same feedback prompts with a partner or teacher. Work with fictitious, anonymised or self-written practice material. Do not upload personal data, private recordings, full copyrighted mandatory texts or another person's work without permission. Recordings are voluntary and should stay private unless everybody involved has explicitly agreed to sharing them.

Authorship rule: Keep your own draft, the narrow feedback, your decision and your revision. If an AI gives a factual claim, quotation or source, verify it independently.

Vorwissen: 3-minute diagnostic

  1. In English, explain the difference between a thesis and a topic.
  2. Underline two words that connect ideas in your last paragraph.
  3. Name one feature of formal written register.
  4. Write one recurring error you personally want to notice earlier.

Lernweg

Help ladder: English first

Use help in this order before asking for German support:

  1. Context: infer meaning from the sentence and paragraph.
  2. Word formation: identify root, prefix, suffix and word family.
  3. Visualise: sketch the relation, sequence or contrast.
  4. English explanation: use a definition, synonym or example.
  5. Dictionary: consult a monolingual English dictionary; then, if needed, a bilingual dictionary.
  6. German hint: use a short German explanation only as a final scaffold.

Listening and Viewing 1: A focused thesis

Before viewing: Write one thesis for the question Should schools schedule short device-free writing periods?

While viewing: Note three criteria for a useful thesis statement.

After viewing: Do not rewrite your thesis immediately. First label one strength and one weakness. Then revise it yourself in one sentence.

Reading: a short fictitious practice text

Fictitious practice material – not real survey data:

At Northbridge College, a fictional student council is discussing one device-free writing period per week. In a fictional class survey of 24 students, 15 said notifications often interrupted longer writing tasks, while 6 said digital tools helped them organise ideas. A complete ban would therefore ignore useful learning strategies. However, a short, clearly defined period without notifications could give students time to plan, draft and review one argument before returning to digital resources. The strongest policy would not treat technology as the enemy. Instead, it would create a limited space in which attention is protected and students remain responsible for deciding when digital support genuinely improves their writing.

Reading task: Identify the thesis, one concession and two cohesive links. Then explain how the writer avoids an absolute claim.

Context vocabulary and word formation

Word English meaning in this course Word family / useful form Your context clue
thesis central arguable claim thesis statement
cohesion visible links between parts of a text cohesive
coherence logical overall flow of ideas coherent / coherently
register language choices suited to audience, purpose and situation formal / informal
qualify make a claim more precise or less absolute qualification / qualified
recurring error an error pattern that appears repeatedly recur / recurrence
revise improve your own draft by making decisions revision / revised
verify check whether a claim or source is reliable verification / verifiable

Vocabulary task: Add one sentence from your own writing context for four words. Use the help ladder before German translation.

Focus 1: Thesis

A useful feedback request limits the task, limits the output and keeps the revision decision with you.

Too broad: Rewrite my essay and make the argument better.

Focused prompt: Read only my task and thesis. In no more than 80 words, tell me whether the thesis is arguable, specific and relevant to the task. Name one strength, one risk and ask two revision questions. Do not rewrite my thesis, paragraph or essay.

Your move: Decide which point you accept. Rewrite the thesis yourself. Then add one sentence: I changed ... because ...

Focus 2: Cohesion

Viewing focus: Distinguish cohesion from coherence. Note two devices that can create links between sentences.

Focused prompt: Read my numbered paragraph only. Identify at most two places where the link between sentences is unclear. Refer to sentence numbers and name the type of issue, for example reference, transition, repetition or logical connection. Ask me a question for each place. Do not rewrite any sentence.

Self-revision: Add, remove or change only the links you can justify. More linking words are not automatically better.

Focus 3: Register

Viewing focus: Collect four signals of formal or informal English. Which of them depend on context rather than being simply “good” or “bad”?

Focused prompt: My target is a formal analytical paragraph for school. Mark at most five phrases whose register may not fit that purpose. For each, explain the mismatch in one short sentence. You may suggest a single word or short phrase, but do not write a replacement sentence or paragraph.

Check: Use a dictionary to verify unfamiliar alternatives before you adopt them.

Focus 4: Recurring errors

Focused prompt: Read this self-written sample of up to 150 words. Look only for recurring language error patterns. Name no more than three patterns, give the sentence numbers and explain the rule briefly. Do not correct every sentence and do not rewrite the text.

Create your personal error watchlist. Possible categories are subject-verb agreement, tense choice, article use, prepositions, word form, punctuation or sentence boundaries. Only add a category if it actually recurs in your writing.

Analyse: Is the feedback useful?

Use four checks:

  1. Task fit: Does the feedback address exactly the requested feature?
  2. Text evidence: Can you locate the issue in your own text?
  3. Language fit: Does the suggestion preserve meaning, register and your voice?
  4. Verification: Can you confirm factual, lexical or source-related claims independently?

If one check fails, do not adopt the feedback automatically.

Speaking: Defend a revision

In pairs, give a 60-second explanation in English:

  1. My original choice was ...
  2. The feedback focused on ...
  3. I accepted / rejected / modified it because ...
  4. My revision is stronger because ...

Your partner may ask one follow-up question. A recording is optional and private.

Writing: The feedback cycle

Write → target → receive feedback → verify → revise → explain.

Write one analytical paragraph of your own. Choose one focus only: thesis, cohesion, register or recurring errors. Use a focused prompt, revise the paragraph yourself and keep a short revision log.

Original issue Feedback received My decision My own revision Rule or principle

Peer feedback and AI feedback

Use the same narrow focus with a partner and, if permitted, with an AI tool. Compare the two responses. Do not ask Which one is better? Ask:

  1. Which response refers more precisely to evidence in my text?
  2. Which response makes me think rather than replacing my thinking?
  3. Which response contains a claim I still need to verify?
  4. Which response helps me make my own revision decision?

Optional Mediation

Fiktive Mitteilung: Die Schreibwerkstatt der Schule bietet am Donnerstag eine offene Feedbackrunde an. Teilnehmende bringen einen eigenen Absatz mit. Es werden keine Texte hochgeladen. Rückmeldungen konzentrieren sich jeweils auf ein vereinbartes Merkmal. Ton- oder Videoaufnahmen sind nicht vorgesehen.

Task: Mediate the relevant information in English for an exchange student who wants to know what happens in the workshop and how privacy is handled. Write 60–80 words. First mediate independently. If AI use is permitted, ask only for a register check afterwards, not for a new version.

Differenzierung BF / LF

Bereich Basisfach BF Leistungsfach LF
Material one short text or paragraph; manageable evidence broader or more complex material; independent links across sources
Feedback focus one criterion at a time; checklist and sentence numbers may be provided criterion can be selected and prioritised independently
Analysis identify and explain central effects with scaffolds analyse interactions among argument, language, structure and effect in greater depth
Writing shorter revision cycle; optional sentence frames longer excerpt; justify priorities and alternatives independently
Transfer guided AFB II with selected AFB III moves increased AFB II/III: evaluate, connect, justify and transfer

No artificial difficulty: LF means greater breadth, depth, text complexity and independent synthesis, not unnecessarily obscure vocabulary. B2 is the shared core orientation; parts may reach C1.

Fehleranalyse: Build a revision memory

After two writing tasks, compare your revision logs. Circle one pattern that recurs and write a personal rule in English. Example: Before I add a linker, I check the logical relation first. In your next task, test the rule before requesting feedback.

Transfer: Prompt surgery

Turn each broad request into a narrow one:

  1. Make this better.
  2. Correct everything.
  3. Write a stronger conclusion.
  4. Give me advanced vocabulary.

Your improved prompt must specify one focus, one output limit, one evidence requirement and one no-rewrite rule.

Offene Aufgaben

Leicht

  1. Thesis: Write two thesis statements for the same fictional school topic. Mark which one is more specific and explain why in two English sentences.
  2. Wortbildung: Create six word-family cards for revise, verify, coherent, qualify, analyse and argue. Add one context sentence to each.
  3. Prompt Engineering: Transform two broad requests into narrow feedback prompts with a no-rewrite rule.
  4. Sprechen: Give a private 60-second explanation of one revision decision. Recording is optional; if you record, keep it private.

Standard

  1. Schreibfeedback: Write 120–180 words on a fictitious topic, request feedback on one feature only and revise the text yourself.
  2. Peer-Feedback: Give a partner and, if permitted, an approved AI the same focused task. Compare the evidence each response uses.
  3. Fehleranalyse: Build a revision log from two self-written paragraphs and identify one genuinely recurring error pattern.
  4. Sprachmittlung: Mediate a short, teacher-provided German notice into English and use feedback only to check register after your own first version.

Schwer

  1. Quellenkritik: Audit three factual or lexical claims from AI feedback. Document how you verified, corrected or rejected each one.
  2. Basisfach und Leistungsfach: Redesign one BF task as an LF task by increasing depth, source linkage and independent analysis without making the vocabulary artificially difficult.
  3. Mini-Studie: With fictitious or fully anonymised data, compare how two feedback methods affect revision decisions. Do not upload private student texts.
  4. Transfer: Design a reusable feedback protocol for thesis, cohesion, register and recurring errors. Include a stop-rule that prevents replacement writing.

Lernkontrolle

  1. Feedbackdiagnose: You receive feedback that rewrites half a paragraph although you asked only about cohesion. Explain which instruction was violated and redesign the request.
  2. Revision begründen: Compare an original and revised paragraph. Explain two changes in terms of meaning, cohesion, register or accuracy, not merely “it sounds better”.
  3. Quellenprüfung: An AI response names a statistic and a website. Design a verification procedure before the information could enter an essay.
  4. Transfer BF/LF: Take one analytical task and describe how scaffolding, material range and expected independence should differ between BF and LF.
  5. Fehlerpriorisierung: A paragraph contains eight individual mistakes but only two recurring patterns. Decide what belongs on the writer's watchlist and justify your choice.
  6. Autorenschaft: Develop three criteria that show a final text is still the learner's own work after receiving narrow feedback.

Lernnachweis

For your Lernnachweis, submit a compact revision portfolio that demonstrates your own decisions:

  1. one self-written first draft or analytical paragraph;
  2. one focused feedback request with a clear no-rewrite rule;
  3. the feedback received from an approved source or a human peer;
  4. your own revised version with marked changes;
  5. a short English rationale explaining at least three accepted, modified or rejected suggestions;
  6. a verification note for any factual, lexical or source-related AI claim;
  7. a personal error watchlist and one transfer goal for the next task.
