ABI LF - Exterior Paint – Kit de Waal
ABI LF - Exterior Paint – Kit de Waal
Mini-description: This aiMOOC helps you analyse family, migration-related identity, memory, belonging and narrative detail in Kit de Waal's short story Exterior Paint (2017). It is designed for the Leistungsfach Englisch, Kursstufe Baden-Württemberg. You work with the legally available original text, contextual sources, archival media and self-created analysis visuals. English comes first; German support appears only after context, word-building, visualisation, English explanation and dictionary work.
Copyright and privacy: Do not copy the full story into this course, public platforms or external AI systems. Use a legal print or online copy and quote only short passages when necessary for analysis. Recordings are optional and should stay private/local unless your school has explicitly agreed otherwise. Use fictional names and fictional personal data in practice tasks.

Visual prompt, not the house from the story: What can a front door communicate about a home before anybody enters?
Einleitung
Exterior Paint connects an ordinary domestic task with a layered history of migration, racism, love, grief and social change. In the present, Alfonse prepares the house he shared with Lillian for sale. Work on the front door releases memories of his younger self, his move from St Kitts, his relationship with Lillian and events in Smethwick in 1965. The story repeatedly places private memory beside public history.
For Leistungsfach analysis, plot summary is only the starting point. Your main task is to explain how narrative detail, time structure, perspective, setting, dialogue and recurring objects create meaning.
Original text: Kit de Waal: Exterior Paint – The Irish Times, 2017
Media entry: What can a front door remember?
Look at the image above before reading.
- Prediction: Write three possible meanings a painted front door could acquire in a story about migration and memory.
- Detail: List five concrete visual details before interpreting any of them.
- Hypothesis: Complete: “A change in colour might represent …, but I would need textual evidence such as …”
Rule for close reading: Observation first, interpretation second, evidence third.
I can ...
- I can summarise the relevant stages of Alfonse's present and remembered past without retelling the whole story.
- I can analyse narrative perspective, time structure, setting, dialogue, sensory detail and recurring motifs.
- I can explain how migration-related identity develops through place, memory, relationships and experiences of exclusion.
- I can discuss different forms of belonging without reducing the story to a simple assimilation narrative.
- I can contextualise the fictional story with verified material about 1965 Smethwick and post-war Caribbean migration.
- I can support interpretive claims with precise textual evidence and explain the function of that evidence.
- I can connect the story to another text, image, archive source or migration narrative.
- I can distinguish requirements of the written examination from those of the Kommunikationsprüfung.

Official assessment and correction rules for Abitur 2027
Leistungsfach focus: Compared with the Basisfach, tasks require greater breadth, depth, differentiation, abstraction and independent linking of material. In your practice, spend more time on AFB II and AFB III: analyse, compare, evaluate, discuss and transfer rather than only identify or reproduce.
Bildungsplan 2016 Englisch – Gymnasium
Vorwissen: activate before reading
- Migration: What is the difference between moving, migration, exile, diaspora and return?
- Belonging: Can a person belong to several places and communities at the same time?
- Memory: Which senses can trigger autobiographical memories?
- Context: What do you already know about post-war Caribbean migration to Britain?
- Source criticism: How can you tell whether a historical image, caption or AI-generated explanation is trustworthy?
Do not answer from stereotypes. Mark each point as know – assume – need to verify.
Reading: use the original text, not a replacement summary
Read the legal original or your school edition. Work in five stops.
| Reading stop | Focus | One task |
|---|---|---|
| A: Present-day house and valuation | Home, property, grief, appearance | Identify one detail that turns a lived home into a marketable object. |
| B: Sanding and the neighbour | Material trigger, sensory memory, community | Track what physical action or word causes the narrative to move into memory. |
| C: 1965 Smethwick | Migration, racial boundaries, relationship | Distinguish what Alfonse experiences directly from what the narrator explains. |
| D: Malcolm X and decision | Public history and private agency | Explain why the encounter matters to Alfonse without claiming it mechanically “causes” everything that follows. |
| E: Return to the present | Grief, continuity, belonging | Compare the meaning of the door at the beginning and at the end. |
A useful micro-quotation for analysis is the estate agent's phrase “Presentation is everything.” Treat it as evidence about surface, value and selling, not as a summary of the whole story.
Context media 1: St Kitts and migration

Alfonse's origin in St Kitts matters because migration is not presented as an abstract topic. It involves a remembered place, expectations of temporary residence, emotional ties and changing attachments. Do not assume that one fictional character represents every Caribbean migrant experience.
Context question: How can a temporary migration plan become a long-term biography without the earlier home becoming irrelevant?
Context media 2: broader post-war Caribbean migration

This archive image is useful for the broader history of post-war Caribbean migration. It is not evidence that Alfonse travelled on the Empire Windrush. Keep the distinction between historical context and fictional biography clear.
Viewing source: The National Archives, Remembering Windrush.
- Before: Predict three push or pull factors that might appear.
- During: Note one reason for migration, one example of reception in Britain and one limitation of the term “Windrush” as a label.
- After: Write two sentences connecting the broad context to Exterior Paint and one sentence explaining what the video cannot prove about Alfonse.
Context media 3: Smethwick, February 1965

The story places a fictional private life in a documented historical location. Malcolm X visited Marshall Street in Smethwick on 12 February 1965, shortly before his death in New York. Archival material documents his visit and the local context of racial discrimination.
Viewing task: Separate three levels in your notes: what the archive shows – what a reporter/caption claims – what the short story imagines.
For primary archive context use: Midlands News: 12.02.1965: Malcolm X – MACE Archive.

Source-check warning: Historical photographs are often reposted with altered captions or edited signs. Do not use a viral image as evidence until you have traced it to a reliable archive or original collection.
Author context: Kit de Waal

Kit de Waal was born in Birmingham in 1960 to an Irish mother and a father from St Kitts. That background can help you formulate context questions, but it does not prove that Alfonse is autobiographical or that every fictional detail expresses the author's personal experience.
Optional author viewing: Select a short teacher-chosen section. Note how de Waal talks about representing lives, voice or social experience. Then write: “This interview can illuminate ..., but it cannot by itself prove ... about Exterior Paint.”
Listening / Viewing strategy
Use a three-column sheet.
| Evidence I can see/hear | Inference I can make | Claim I still need to verify |
|---|---|---|
| A named place, date, sign, voice or archival shot | A cautious interpretation | A historical or biographical statement needing a reliable source |
High-level rule: A documentary clip can contextualise a story. It cannot replace close reading of the story.
Kontextwortschatz: build meaning before translating
| Base | Word family | Useful collocation | English explanation |
|---|---|---|---|
| belong | belonging | sense of belonging | feeling accepted, connected or at home |
| migrate | migrant, migration, migratory | migration experience | movement from one place to another, often across regions or countries |
| remember | memory, memorable, remembrance | trigger a memory | bring a past experience back into awareness |
| exclude | exclusion, exclusive | social exclusion | being kept outside a group, place or opportunity |
| segregate | segregation, segregated | racial segregation | enforced or practiced separation of groups |
| resist | resistance, resistant | resist discrimination | oppose pressure, treatment or control |
| root | rooted, rootless, rootedness | feel rooted in a place | feel strongly connected to a place or community |
| value | valuation, valuable, devalue | property valuation | judging monetary or non-monetary worth |
| inherit | inheritance, inherited | inherited memory | receive something from an earlier generation |
| grieve | grief, grieving | process grief | respond emotionally to loss |
Word-building routine
Before using German, follow this order:
- Context: Guess the meaning from the sentence.
- Word family: Identify prefix, suffix and related words.
- Visualise: Sketch a scene, relation or concept.
- English explanation: Write a short definition in your own words.
- Dictionary: Check a monolingual dictionary and one typical collocation.
- German: Use a German equivalent only if the English route is still unclear.
German rescue support: only after the English route
| English | Short German help |
|---|---|
| belonging | Zugehörigkeit |
| grief | Trauer |
| segregation | Segregation, institutionalisierte oder praktizierte Trennung |
| valuation | Bewertung, hier auch Immobilienbewertung |
| narrative detail | erzählerisches Detail |
Use the German column to unlock meaning, then return to English for analysis.
Self-created visual 1: layered paint model
This analysis visual is created for this aiMOOC. It is a thinking tool, not a quotation from the story.
| Layer | Concrete object/action | Possible analytical meaning | Evidence question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface | exterior paint | appearance and presentation | Who cares about the surface, and why? |
| Material history | sanding through layers | past remains under present appearance | Which memory follows the physical action? |
| Colour change | green to red | commercial change, celebration, renewal | Who gives each colour meaning? |
| Home | front door and house | boundary between private life and public street | Which scenes move across that boundary? |
| Market | preparing to sell | monetary value versus lived value | Where do property language and personal memory conflict? |
Stretch: Avoid the formula “red always means love”. Show how the story gives colour more than one function.
Self-created visual 2: narrative time
| Present line | Trigger | Memory line | Return effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Older Alfonse prepares the house | physical work on the door | migration, work, Lillian, 1965 | the present gains historical depth |
| Conversation with Mr Kang | a word, object or social exchange | earlier attitudes and experiences | neighbourly life is read against earlier exclusion |
| Sale and surface | paint layers | love, conflict and public events | property becomes an archive of lived experience |
Core concept: The story does not simply “tell the past after the present”. It lets present-day sensations and words activate memory.
Analysis 1: family and private belonging
Family in Exterior Paint is not only biological. Alfonse's remembered relationship with Lillian, the presence of their daughter and his present-day interaction with neighbours create several forms of connection.
The house matters because it has been lived in. After Lillian's death, preparing it for sale exposes tension between a home as property and a home as accumulated relationship. The ending does not erase grief; instead, social contact suggests that belonging can continue in changed forms.
AFB II prompt: Analyse how domestic details transform the house from a setting into a record of family life.
Analysis 2: migration-related identity
Alfonse's identity develops across places rather than replacing one place with another. He remembers St Kitts, experiences homesickness and initially imagines his stay in Britain as temporary. In Smethwick, racial boundaries shape where he can enter and how openly he and Lillian can live their relationship.
A strong analysis avoids a one-directional “integration success story”. Ask instead:
- Place: Which locations allow or restrict participation?
- Memory: Which earlier attachments remain active?
- Relationship: How does love create both vulnerability and commitment?
- Agency: When does Alfonse act, hesitate or change course?
- Change: What does the later neighbourhood suggest, and what does it not erase?
Self-created visual 3: belonging network
| Node in Alfonse's life | Type of belonging | Tension |
|---|---|---|
| St Kitts | origin, memory, earlier attachments | distance and changing recollection |
| Lillian | intimate belonging | racism, secrecy, conflict, loss |
| Marshall Street | home and public street | private life meets public racial politics |
| Daughter | family continuity | ageing and transition |
| Mr Kang and family | neighbourly belonging | new social context after Lillian's death |
Interpretive question: Does the story present belonging as a place, a relationship, a practice, a memory—or a combination?
Analysis 3: memory
Memory is represented as situated and sensory. It emerges from work, texture, colour, words, domestic objects and places rather than from a formal decision to narrate a life story. This makes the past feel active inside the present.
The key analytical move is to connect trigger → remembered scene → changed meaning in the present.
AFB II prompt: Analyse how material details make memory structurally important rather than merely decorative.
Analysis 4: narrative detail and perspective
The narration gives close access to Alfonse's perceptions and recollections while remaining in the third person. For exam analysis, consider:
| Technique | What to look for | Function question |
|---|---|---|
| Focalisation | information filtered through Alfonse | How does limited access shape sympathy and uncertainty? |
| Time shifts | transitions between present and remembered past | What triggers each shift? |
| Sensory detail | touch, colour, sound, smell, food, physical work | Why is memory embodied? |
| Dialogue | short exchanges, social rules, tension | What can speech reveal that narration does not state directly? |
| Setting | pub, street, home, doorway | Which boundaries are social as well as physical? |
| Recurring object | paint, door, house | How does repetition accumulate meaning? |
Do not write “the author uses many details to make it interesting”. Name the detail, technique and effect precisely.
Analysis 5: public history inside private memory
The appearance of Malcolm X connects Alfonse's private choices with a documented historical event. The story, however, presents the encounter through fiction. A real visit to Smethwick does not automatically validate every imagined interaction or private consequence in the narrative.
A careful formulation is: The fictional Alfonse interprets a public figure's visible presence as meaningful for his own situation. This preserves the difference between documented history and literary construction.
AFB III prompt: Discuss whether the story presents historical change primarily through institutions, public symbols or everyday personal decisions.
Analysis 6: title and the meaning of “exterior”
The title can be read on several levels:
- Exterior: the literal outside surface of the house.
- Appearance: the estate agent's concern with presentation.
- Identity: ways people are judged from visible or socially assigned categories.
- History: layers underneath a present-day surface.
- Boundary: the door connects private interior and public street.
These are interpretations, not fixed dictionary meanings of the title. Rank them only after you test each one against several textual moments.
Speaking: from close reading to Kommunikationsprüfung
Task A – 60-second evidence talk: Choose one object from the story. Make one claim, give one short reference to the text, name the technique and explain the effect.
Task B – Tandem discussion: “Belonging is created more by relationships than by places.” One student begins with Exterior Paint, the other introduces a second course material. Respond to each other rather than delivering two separate mini-essays.
Task C – 5-minute monologue simulation: Use the Commons image of the Marshall Street plaque as your prompt. Explain what it can contribute to a discussion of migration and public memory. Then connect it to the course theme without treating the image as proof for a fictional scene.
Important exam distinction: For the official Kommunikationsprüfung, a compulsory-work excerpt itself cannot be used as the examination prompt. Therefore practise moving from an external image, quotation, audio or thesis to the broader theme.
Writing: Leistungsfach AFB II / III
Reading-comprehension task: Summarise how the present-day activity at the house leads into recollections of the past.
Analysis task: Analyse how narrative detail and time structure connect memory with belonging in Exterior Paint.
AFB III discussion: “A home can function as an archive of migration.” Discuss this statement with reference to Exterior Paint and at least one other relevant course material.
Transfer task: Compare how two works from the course make an individual migration experience visible through setting or material objects.
No replacement essay: Produce your own response. Use the following paragraph frame only as scaffolding:
| Move | Question |
|---|---|
| Claim | What exactly is your analytical point? |
| Evidence | Which brief textual reference supports it? |
| Technique | Which narrative or linguistic method creates the effect? |
| Explanation | How does the detail develop theme, character or structure? |
| Link | How does the paragraph answer the task wording? |
Optional mediation
Didactically created German source note, not a historical primary source:
Im Februar 1965 besuchte Malcolm X die Marshall Street in Smethwick. Archivaufnahmen dokumentieren den Besuch und zeigen das starke Medieninteresse. Für die Analyse einer literarischen Erzählung ist wichtig, zwischen belegbaren historischen Informationen und fiktionalen Figuren, Dialogen und Motiven zu unterscheiden.
Mediation task: You are preparing a short English-language museum audio guide for exchange students. Mediate the relevant information in about 70 words. Do not translate sentence by sentence. Add one sentence explaining why source distinction matters when reading historical fiction.
Hilfen: Support – Core – Stretch
| Level | Use this support |
|---|---|
| Support | Sentence starters: “The detail of ... suggests ... because ...”; “The shift to the past is triggered by ...”; “This may indicate ..., although ...”. |
| Core | Use the chain observation → technique → evidence → effect → task link. |
| Stretch | Develop a competing interpretation, test it against another passage and explain which reading is better supported. |
Leistungsfach expectation: The goal is not longer writing for its own sake. The goal is denser evidence, more precise terminology, more nuanced interpretation and independent material connections.
Feedback: five questions before submission
- Task: Did I answer the operator and every part of the question?
- Evidence: Is every major interpretive claim anchored in the text?
- Analysis: Did I explain how technique creates meaning instead of retelling plot?
- Context: Did I keep historical context separate from fictional invention?
- Language: Did I use precise analytical verbs and varied sentence structures?
Fehleranalyse: diagnose and repair
| Common problem | Weak move | Repair |
|---|---|---|
| Plot retelling | “Then this happens ...” | Ask “How is the event narrated, and why this way?” |
| Theme without evidence | “The story is about belonging.” | Add a detail, technique and explanation. |
| Quote dropping | quotation followed by no analysis | Explain diction, structure, perspective or motif. |
| Context determinism | history is treated as the only meaning of the story | Distinguish context from textual construction. |
| Author = narrator | “de Waal thinks ...” | Identify narrator, focaliser or character first. |
| Character view = historical fact | Alfonse's perception is presented as objective history | Verify with an external source before making a factual claim. |
| Generic technique | “The author uses language.” | Name lexical field, syntax, focalisation, dialogue, sensory detail or time shift. |
| AI dependency | polished paragraph cannot be explained by the learner | Rebuild from your own notes and verify every source and quotation. |
AI and source-check protocol
- Original first: Check any AI-generated claim against the legal original text.
- Official rules: Check Abitur rules only against current official Baden-Württemberg or IQB material.
- Historical verification: Prefer archives, libraries, museums and established reference works.
- Copyright: Do not upload the full copyrighted story to an external AI service.
- Privacy: Do not upload names, faces, voices or personal school data without explicit permission.
- Authorship: AI may help you generate questions or check terminology, but it must not replace your own assessed analysis.
- Transparency: Record which tools or sources you used if your teacher requires disclosure.
Transfer: connect materials independently
Choose one additional course text, film, speech, image or short story. Build a comparison around one analytical concept, not around two separate summaries.
| Lens | Exterior Paint | Second material | Comparative question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Migration | place, memory, racialised boundaries | your evidence | How is movement linked to identity? |
| Belonging | home, relationship, neighbourhood | your evidence | Is belonging chosen, inherited, negotiated or imposed? |
| Memory | sensory triggers and flashback | your evidence | Who controls the past and how is it narrated? |
| Setting | domestic and public spaces | your evidence | How do spaces include or exclude? |
Abi-Check
| Skill | AFB | Ready when ... |
|---|---|---|
| Aspect-based summary | I | I can reduce the plot to what the task asks for. |
| Narrative analysis | II | I can connect technique, evidence and effect. |
| Contextualisation | II | I can use verified context without replacing textual analysis. |
| Comparison | II/III | I can build a shared criterion across two materials. |
| Discussion | III | I can develop, qualify and weigh interpretations. |
| Oral interaction | II/III | I can respond, clarify, disagree politely and connect material spontaneously. |
Written exam practice: train sustained reading, structured analysis and written transfer under time pressure.
Kommunikationsprüfung practice: train a clear monologue plus genuine interaction from an external prompt, not a memorised essay.

- Door motif storyboard: Create a six-frame visual sequence showing how the meaning of the front door changes across the story. Use only your own drawings, symbols or freely licensed images.
- Word-family map: Build a one-page English word-family network around belong, migrate, remember, exclude and value. Add one collocation for each family.
- Family network: Draw Alfonse's relationship network using only names and short evidence labels. Distinguish family, intimate relationship and neighbourly community.
- Place map: Mark St Kitts, Smethwick and one present-day family location on a simple map. Add one sentence explaining what each place contributes to identity.
Standard
- Micro close reading: Choose a paragraph from your legal copy and annotate five details. For each, write technique, effect and connection to the task.
- Private oral practice: Record an optional 90-second audio locally in which you explain one motif. Listen once, note two strengths and one revision, then delete the file if you do not need it.
- Archive and fiction: Compare the MACE description of Malcolm X's Smethwick visit with the fictional scene. Create a two-column sheet labelled documented and imagined.
- Layered-paint infographic: Design your own visual model for surface, memory, history, property and belonging. Every symbolic choice must be justified in one English sentence.
Schwer
- Competing thesis: Formulate two different theses about the title Exterior Paint. Test each against at least three moments in the story and decide which is better supported.
- Cross-text comparison: Compare Exterior Paint with another compulsory or course text through one criterion such as home, border, memory or voice. Build a comparative argument rather than two summaries.
- Mediation project: Use a short German teacher-provided museum or archive note and mediate the information for an English-speaking visitor. Explain one deliberate omission or reformulation.
- Source audit: Investigate one online image or historical claim connected with 1965 Smethwick. Trace its origin, licence, date and caption. Document how you checked for alteration or decontextualisation.

Lernkontrolle
- Narrative causality: Explain how a physical action in the present can change the reader's understanding of an event from the past. Use two different moments from the story.
- Context transfer: A classmate claims that archival proof of Malcolm X's visit makes the entire fictional scene “historically true”. Correct the reasoning and formulate a more precise statement.
- Belonging comparison: Compare belonging through family and belonging through neighbourhood. Explain one similarity and one tension.
- Title interpretation: Develop an interpretation of the title that includes both literal and metaphorical dimensions, then name one textual detail that could challenge your reading.
- Exam transfer: Turn an image of a front door into a Kommunikationsprüfung-style monologue prompt that connects to migration and memory without quoting the compulsory story.
- Evidence evaluation: Given three claims about the story, decide which would require textual evidence, which would require a historical source and which might require both. Justify every decision.
