E9 M - English varieties and mutual understanding

Mini-description: Listen to understandable standard varieties of English and notice that pronunciation and vocabulary can differ. Your goal is not to copy one accent. Your goal is to understand, respond, ask for help and keep communication going.

Level: Klasse 9, M-Niveau, Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Baden-Württemberg. B1-oriented, increasingly independent.

Media start – 3-step listening

  1. First listen: Watch about 60–90 seconds without subtitles. Note three words you understand.
  2. Second listen: Watch again. Write the main idea in one English sentence.
  3. Third listen: Compare with a partner. Ask: What did you hear? What helped you understand?

E9-M audio mode: Start at normal speed or 0.9×. Use 0.85× only for one difficult replay. Then return to 1.0×. Work with short sections and more than one speaker.

I can ...

  1. I can understand the main idea of clear, moderately natural English spoken in different standard varieties.
  2. I can notice differences in pronunciation and vocabulary without judging one variety as “better”.
  3. I can ask for repetition, clarification or an example.
  4. I can compare two language examples with both, while, whereas and in contrast.
  5. I can give a short, clear opinion and react spontaneously.
  6. I can write a coherent short email, blog entry or report about language variation.
  7. I can mediate the key message for another person without translating every word.
  8. I can focus on intelligibility: being easy to understand is more important than sounding accent-free.

What you already know

Think for one minute:

  1. Where have you heard English outside school?
  2. Did all speakers sound the same?
  3. Which words or sounds were easy to understand?
  4. What do you do when you do not understand someone?

English is not one single sound

English is used in many places and by people with many linguistic backgrounds. A variety can differ in pronunciation, vocabulary, spelling and sometimes grammar. An accent mainly describes pronunciation. A dialect can also include vocabulary and grammar.

Look at the map. Do not try to memorise every label. Ask instead:

  1. What does the map suggest about the global use of English?
  2. Why might two clear speakers use different words or sounds?
  3. Why is it useful to listen to more than one variety?

Important: Maps and models simplify reality. People move, mix languages and change the way they speak. A person does not have to “sound like” a country or region.

Listening and viewing

Task A – listen for gist Choose one short section of about 60–90 seconds.

  1. What is the topic?
  2. Which place or variety is mentioned?
  3. Which two words do you recognise immediately?

Task B – listen for detail Replay the same section.

  1. Note one pronunciation feature.
  2. Note one vocabulary item or expression.
  3. Write one sentence about what stayed the same across the examples.

Task C – respond Tell a partner: I understood ..., I noticed ..., I was unsure about ...

Do not imitate for comedy. Practise listening and clear communication, not stereotypes.

Multiple-speaker challenge Use a short teacher-selected section. Listen once for the speakers’ main message. On the second listen, focus on who says what. On the third listen, choose one useful clarification phrase and use it in your own mini-dialogue.

Reading: Same language, different choices

Read the short fictional exchange.

Maya: “I left my phone in the flat. Can we go back?”

Jordan: “Sure. I’d probably say apartment, but I know what you mean.”

Maya: “Thanks. And could you say that last part again?”

Jordan: “Of course. I said I know what you mean.”

The speakers understand each other because they use context and clarification. Different words do not automatically block communication.

Function Useful English
Clarify What do you mean by ...?
Ask for repetition Could you say that again, please?
Check meaning Do you mean ...?
Give an example For example, ...
Repair communication Let me say that another way.

Context vocabulary

Some vocabulary choices are associated more strongly with particular standard varieties, but real usage overlaps.

Idea One common form Another common form
home flat apartment
travel holiday vacation
phone mobile phone cell phone
waiting queue line
fuel petrol gas

Use rule: Understand both where possible. In your own writing, choose words that fit your audience and keep your text consistent.

Notice, do not memorise: English spelling conventions can also vary. In a school text, clarity and consistency matter more than mixing spellings at random.

Pronunciation and fluency

You do not need to learn the whole IPA chart here. Use it only to notice that vowel quality can vary.

Try this fluency routine with a sentence such as:

Could you say that again, please?

  1. Mark the stressed words.
  2. Speak in chunks, not word by word.
  3. Keep a natural rhythm.
  4. Record only if you want to. Listen privately.
  5. Ask: Was I easy to understand?

Communication target: clear stress, useful pauses and understandable key words. Accent-free speech is not the target.

Speaking: Understand → respond → ask → improve

Work in pairs.

Round 1 Speaker A explains a simple school plan in 30–45 seconds. Speaker B must respond and ask at least one question.

Round 2 Speaker B changes one familiar word, for example flat/apartment or holiday/vacation. Speaker A checks meaning naturally.

Round 3 Repeat the exchange more fluently.

Useful moves:

  1. So, you mean ...?
  2. Could you give me an example?
  3. I understood the first part, but not ...
  4. Let me rephrase that.
  5. That makes sense.

Functional grammar: comparing varieties

Use comparison language to stay precise.

Both speakers are easy to understand.

One speaker says flat, whereas the other says apartment.

The pronunciation is different, but the message is the same.

While the words differ, the context makes the meaning clear.

Grammar task: Write four comparison sentences about two examples from this course. Avoid statements such as Everyone in country X says .... Use careful language such as can, may, often or in this example.

Writing

Write 100–130 words.

Choice A – blog post: English sounds different – and that is normal.

Choice B – email: Explain to a fictional exchange partner how you deal with unfamiliar pronunciation.

Include:

  1. one example of vocabulary variation
  2. one example of pronunciation variation
  3. two clarification strategies
  4. one concluding sentence about intelligibility

Keep your own text. If you use digital feedback or AI support, compare suggestions with your original version and decide yourself what to change.

Mediation

A German-speaking classmate will join an English online meeting with students from several countries. They worry that they will not understand every speaker.

Explain the key advice in German in 4–5 sentences. Do not translate this course word for word. Include:

  1. listen for the main idea first
  2. use context
  3. ask for repetition or clarification
  4. accept pronunciation and vocabulary variation
  5. focus on mutual understanding

Feedback and error analysis

After speaking or writing, check four things:

Check Question
Meaning Is my message clear?
Interaction Did I react and ask when needed?
Language Did I use useful comparison and clarification phrases?
Intelligibility Are key words, stress and pauses easy to follow?

Error analysis: Choose only one or two important errors to improve first. Then use the corrected phrase again in a new sentence or mini-dialogue.

Safe media and AI use

  1. Use only fictional names and profile data in tasks.
  2. Do not publish private social-media information.
  3. Audio recordings are voluntary and should stay private unless you clearly choose otherwise.
  4. Do not upload recordings or personal texts to external AI services without permission.
  5. Check AI-generated facts, sources and feedback.
  6. Keep your own version of your text so that you can compare changes.

Transfer: real communication

Imagine you are in an international project group. You understand most of what a new partner says, but one word is unfamiliar.

Use this chain:

Understand → Respond → Ask → Hint → Improve → Use again

Example:

I understood the plan. What do you mean by “queue” here?

A line of people waiting.

Got it. So we should wait in the queue near the entrance. Thanks.

Now create your own 4-line repair dialogue.

Can-do check

Mark each statement with ✓, ~ or ?.

  1. I can understand the gist of a short clip with an unfamiliar standard variety.
  2. I can notice differences without calling one pronunciation “wrong”.
  3. I can ask for repetition or clarification.
  4. I can compare examples with both, while, whereas.
  5. I can write a coherent short text about language variation.
  6. I can mediate the main message without translating everything.
  7. I can improve one communication problem and reuse the better phrase.

If you have three or more ? marks, repeat one listening section and use Help 1–3 before moving on.

Follow-up course

Next step: Communication strategies in international English – practise turn-taking, clarification, paraphrasing and short discussions with several speakers.
