E9 G - Ask for travel information

Learning path: English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again.

Media start: Look at the sign. Where could you see it? Say two things you may ask there. Use English words first.

First listening: Watch once without a transcript. Listen only for direction words. Then tell a partner: Where is the train station?

I-can-Ziele

  1. I can ask politely about a platform, a time, a price, a direction, a room and opening hours.
  2. I can understand short answers such as Platform 4, At 6:20, £12.50 or Turn left.
  3. I can react and check with Sorry?, Could you repeat that, please? and So, platform 4?
  4. I can speak clearly in a short travel role-play with two or three speakers.
  5. I can write a short, structured travel message or enquiry.
  6. I can mediate simple travel information from German into spoken English.

Vorwissen: Quick check

Answer in short English. One phrase is enough.

  1. You are at a station. What can you ask?
  2. You do not understand a time. What can you say?
  3. You need a cheap ticket. Which word means Preis?
  4. You are lost. Name two direction words.
  5. A museum is closed. Which information do you need?

Hint: Start with Excuse me or Could you ...? You do not need perfect English to start.

Input: Travel information in small steps

Understand: six useful questions

Situation Useful question Short answer you may hear
train Excuse me. Which platform is the train to York? Platform 4.
time What time does it leave? At 6:20.
price How much is a single ticket? Twelve pounds fifty.
direction How do I get to the museum? Go straight. Then turn left.
room Do you have a room for tonight? Yes. Room 218.
opening hours What time do you open? At nine.

Mini-rule: Be polite, keep the question short, listen for the key information.

Look & say: What information can a platform sign give you? Say one question you could ask if the sign is not clear.

Listening and Viewing

Listen 1 – gist: What is the main problem?

Listen 2 – details: Tick in your notes when you hear a useful direction phrase.

After listening: Give a two-step route to a partner. Keep it simple: Go straight. Turn right.

Challenge: Listen for a polite opening. Do not copy every sentence. Choose one short phrase that you can use yourself.

Reading: Station, hotel, visitor centre

Read the fictional travel board.

Place Information
Train to York Platform 4 · 18:20 · £12.50 single
City Museum 10:00–17:00 · closed Monday
Riverside Hostel Room 218 · breakfast 07:00–09:30
Tourist Information opposite the bus station · open 09:00–17:30

Quick response: Your friend asks: What platform? Answer with only the key information. Then answer: How much?

Kontextwortschatz

Word or chunk Use it for ...
platform the place where you wait for a train
single ticket one journey
return ticket going there and back
fare the price of a journey
leave / depart saying when transport starts
arrive saying when transport gets there
straight on a direction
turn left / right a direction
opposite a place on the other side
reception asking for help in a hotel
available saying a room or seat is free
opening hours saying when a place is open

Use again: Choose four chunks and make four short travel questions or answers.

Pronunciation and Fluency

Communication first. Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit.

  1. Stress the key word: Which PLATFORM? – What TIME? – How MUCH?
  2. Say times in small chunks: six twenty, nine fifteen, five thirty.
  3. Watch number pairs: thirteen / thirty, fourteen / forty, fifteen / fifty.
  4. Use a polite rhythm: Excuse me. Could you help me, please?

Fluency loop: Read one question slowly. Say it again without reading. Change one detail. Use it in a role-play.

Respond and ask again

Short answers are normal in travel situations. React to the key information.

You hear ... You can respond ...
Platform 7. Platform 7. Thanks.
At quarter past six. Sorry, 6:15?
£18. Is that for a single ticket?
Turn right at the bank. Right at the bank. Got it.
Room 305. Room 305. Thank you.
We close at five. At five. Thanks.

Repair phrases: Sorry? · Could you repeat that, please? · Could you say that more slowly? · Did you say platform eight?

Functional grammar: only what you need

Use a polite question frame.

  1. Could you tell me ...? → Could you tell me which platform I need?
  2. What time does ...? → What time does the train leave?
  3. How much is ...? → How much is a return ticket?
  4. How do I get to ...? → How do I get to the hotel?
  5. Do you have ...? → Do you have a room for tonight?

Accuracy focus 1: After does, use the base form: What time does it leave?

Accuracy focus 2: In direct questions, keep the question order: Where is the station?

Speaking: short role-plays

Work in pairs. Change roles after one minute.

Role-play A – Station

  1. Traveller: Ask for platform, departure time and price.
  2. Staff: Answer with short information. Change one detail.

Role-play B – Tourist Information

  1. Visitor: Ask for the museum and opening hours.
  2. Staff: Give a two-step direction and one time.

Role-play C – Hotel

  1. Guest: Ask for a room for tonight and breakfast time.
  2. Receptionist: Give a room number and a short answer.

Opinion + reason: Choose one: train, bus or walking. Say: I think ... is better because ... Keep the reason simple.

Short presentation: Give a 30-second travel tip: place, time, price or direction, plus one reason why the information is useful.

Writing: short travel enquiry

Write 5–7 sentences. Use this structure:

  1. greeting
  2. where you want to go or stay
  3. one question about time or opening hours
  4. one question about price or room
  5. one polite closing

Starter: Hello, I would like to visit ... Could you tell me ...?

Keep your own text. If you use digital feedback, compare suggestions with your original and decide what you really want to change.

Mediation: help a visitor

Situation: Eine deutschsprachige Person zeigt Dir diese Information:

Museum: Dienstag bis Sonntag 10–17 Uhr. Letzter Einlass 16:30 Uhr.

Tell an English-speaking visitor the important information in simple English. Do not translate every word. Give the time and the route.

Goal: The museum is open from ... The last entry is ... From the station, go ...

Hilfestufen

Help 1 – keywords: platform · leave · single · left · room · open

Help 2 – frames: Which ...? · What time ...? · How much ...? · How do I get ...? · Do you have ...?

Help 3 – mini model: Excuse me. Which platform is the train to York? Platform 4. What time does it leave? At 6:20. Thanks.

Start with the smallest help you need. Then try again with less help.

Feedback and Fehleranalyse

Use two strengths + one next step.

  1. Strength: Was war sofort verständlich?
  2. Strength: Welche höfliche Frage hat gut funktioniert?
  3. Next step: Verbessere nur einen wichtigen Punkt.

Common fixes:

Not yet Better
What time the train leaves? What time does the train leave?
How much costs the ticket? How much is the ticket?
Where the museum is? Where is the museum?
Give me the platform. Excuse me. Which platform, please?

Transfer: new place, same language

Choose a new place: station, bus terminal, museum, hostel or visitor centre. Ask three useful questions. Your partner answers briefly. Then swap.

Use again: Change one detail and repeat the mini-dialogue faster, but still clearly.

Can-do-Check

Rate yourself: yes / almost / not yet.

  1. I can ask which platform I need.
  2. I can ask and understand a departure time.
  3. I can ask the price of a ticket.
  4. I can ask for and understand a short direction.
  5. I can ask about a room.
  6. I can ask about opening hours.
  7. I can ask someone to repeat or slow down.
  8. I can use the same language in a new travel situation.

If you choose almost or not yet, return to one role-play and try it again with Help 2.
