E8 G - I can speak – English 8
E8 G - I can speak – English 8
Einleitung

Talk, listen, react. In this aiMOOC you show that you can give your opinion, talk about an experience, give advice, imagine a situation and solve a small conflict. Clear meaning is more important than a perfect accent.
Deutsch-Hilfe: Du sprichst zuerst Englisch.
Medien-Einstieg

Look at the picture. What can people say when they agree, disagree or need a solution?
- Say one short sentence: I think ... because ...
- Add one polite reaction: I see your point, but ...
- Ask one question: What do you think?
Viewing task: Watch the BBC Learning English clip once for the main idea. Do not stop for every word. Watch it a second time and note one polite phrase for giving an opinion.
Safety: You do not need an account, comments or uploads. School recordings are voluntary and should stay private unless your teacher and you have agreed otherwise.
I-can-Ziele
After this course, you can say:
- I can give my opinion and add a reason.
- I can talk about an experience in a few connected sentences.
- I can give simple advice with should, could or If I were you ....
- I can talk about an imagined situation with if and would.
- I can disagree politely and suggest a simple solution.
- I can understand the main idea of a short conversation or video.
- I can write a short connected text with a clear beginning, middle and ending.
Vorwissen: Quick start
Try first. Complete the ideas orally.
- In my opinion, ... because ...
- Last weekend, I ... Then ...
- You should ... because ...
- If I had more time, I would ...
- I understand, but maybe we can ...
Need help? Use only one starter first. Add a second sentence when the first one is clear.
Deutsch-Hilfe: Es reicht nicht nur ein Wort. Verbinde zwei Aussagen, zum Beispiel mit because, but, so oder then.
Listening and Viewing

Listening 1: A small conflict
Context: The fictional students Mia and Sam are planning a class activity. Your teacher or a partner reads the dialogue at a moderate speed. Two speakers only.
First listen: What is the problem?
Second listen: Which solution do they choose?
Do not read the script before the two listens.
Transcript after listening:
Mia: I think we should make a short video for the class project.
Sam: I see your point, but I don't want to be on camera.
Mia: Okay. What would be better for you?
Sam: Maybe I could record only my voice.
Mia: That sounds fair. We can also use pictures.
Sam: Great. Then we both have a job.
Check: The conflict is not about winning. They listen, explain a need and choose a solution.
Viewing 2: Polite disagreement
Try: Listen for these ideas: not so sure, I see your point, but, reason. You do not need to understand every word.
Ask: Which phrase sounds polite to you?
Hint: A polite disagreement often has two parts: show that you heard the other person + give your different idea.
Deutsch-Hilfe: Erst Verständnis zeigen, dann widersprechen und begründen.
Reading

Short message: What should Jay do?
Fictional profile: Jay is 14 and in a school music group. No real social-media account or private data is used.
Hi Mia,
Our group has a problem. We planned a rehearsal for Friday, but two people cannot come. I think we should move it to Monday. One person says Friday is better because the room is free. Last month we had the same problem and we found a new room. What do you think? If you were in our group, what would you do?
Jay
Reading task:
- What is Jay's opinion?
- What reason does Jay give?
- What happened last month?
- Give Jay one short piece of advice.
Hint: Find the sentence with I think. Then look for because, last month and the if question.
Optional job text: school event helper
Fictional notice:
School Event Helper Wanted. Work with a partner. Welcome visitors, give simple directions and help at one activity station. Tell us why you would like the role and mention one useful experience.
Try: Prepare a 30–45 second spoken reply or a 50–70 word message.
Hint: Opinion + reason + one experience is enough.
Kontextwortschatz
| Function | Useful English | Meaning help |
|---|---|---|
| Opinion | I think ... / In my opinion ... | eigene Meinung |
| Reason | ... because ... / The reason is ... | Begründung |
| Experience | Last time ... / I remember ... / Then ... | Erfahrung erzählen |
| Advice | You should ... / You could ... / If I were you, I'd ... | Rat geben |
| Hypothesis | If I had ..., I would ... | gedachte Situation |
| Polite disagreement | I see your point, but ... / I'm not sure about that. | höflich widersprechen |
| Solution | How about ...? / Maybe we can ... / That sounds fair. | Lösung suchen |
Use less, but use it well. Pick two phrases that fit your situation. You do not need all of them at once.
Pronunciation: Be clear, not perfect
Meaning first. Stress the important words and pause in useful chunks.
I THINK / Monday is BETTER / because we have more TIME.
I SEE your point / but MAYBE / we can change the ROOM.
Try: Say each sentence once slowly and once at a natural speed.
Hint: Do not stress every word. Key words carry the message.
Deutsch-Hilfe: Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit.
Speaking
Give an opinion
Context: Your class can choose one activity: a quiz, a poster walk or a short class podcast.
Try: Say your choice and one reason.
I think ... is better because ...
Ask: What do you think?
Hint: Add one contrast: but.
Deutsch-Hilfe: Meinung + Grund + Rückfrage.
Talk about an experience
Context: Tell a partner about a time when a plan changed.
Try: Use three steps: First ... Then ... In the end ...
Hint: One clear past event is enough. You do not need a long story.
Deutsch-Hilfe: Erzähle in sinnvoller Reihenfolge.
Give advice
Context: A fictional student is nervous before a short English presentation.
Try: Give two ideas.
You should ...
You could ...
If I were you, I'd ...
Hint: Advice is more useful with a reason: because ...
Imagine a situation
Context: Imagine your class had one extra free lesson each week.
Try: If we had one extra lesson, I would ... because ...
Hint: This is not a real plan. It is an imagined situation.
Solve a small conflict
Context: Two classmates both want the same role in a group task.
Try this pattern:
I understand your idea.
I see your point, but I would like ...
How about ...?
That sounds fair.
Deutsch-Hilfe: Zuhören → eigener Wunsch → Vorschlag → Einigung.
Functional grammar
Hypothetical situations: useful pattern
For an imagined present or future situation, you can use:
If I had more time, I would practise with a partner.
If we changed the plan, we would have more time.
Use the pattern to communicate an idea. Do not build long grammar chains.
Media task: Watch only the part you need. Find one example with if and would. Stop when the main pattern is clear.
Reported speech: simple reporting, no backshift target
You can report what someone says without practising backshift here:
Direct: Mia says, "I need more time."
Report: Mia says that she needs more time.
Direct: Sam says, "We can use pictures."
Report: Sam says that they can use pictures.
G-level focus: Notice what reported speech does: it tells another person what was said. You do not need to practise tense backshift in this course.
Passive and past perfect: recognise, do not force
Passive – receptive: The room was changed. → Focus on what happened to the room.
Past perfect – receptive: They had already planned the poster when Sam called. → The planning happened earlier.
G-level focus: You may notice the passive in a text or video. You do not have to produce it in your speaking task.
Writing
Short e-mail
Write about 70–100 words to a fictional classmate.
Task: Give your opinion about a class activity, mention one past experience and give one suggestion.
Plan:
- Greeting and topic
- Opinion + reason
- Short experience
- Suggestion
- Friendly ending
Useful linkers: because, but, then, so, in the end.
Short opinion text
Write 60–90 words: Should students sometimes choose how they show their learning?
Use a simple frame: opinion → reason → example → short ending.
Mini report
Write 70–100 words about a solved group problem. Say what the problem was, what people suggested and what solution the group chose.
Mediation
Situation: A German-speaking teacher says: „Für die Gruppenarbeit müsst ihr euch auf eine Aufgabe einigen. Niemand muss gefilmt werden.“
Explain the key idea to a fictional English-speaking exchange student.
Try first: For the group work, we need to ... Nobody has to ...
Hint: Do not translate word for word. Pass on the important meaning.
Gestufte Hilfen
Step 1 – English first: Look at the context and try one sentence.
Step 2 – Ask: Can you say that again? / What does ... mean?
Step 3 – Hint: Use a starter from the vocabulary table.
Step 4 – German help if needed: Formuliere zuerst die Kernidee auf Deutsch in wenigen Wörtern. Gehe dann zurück ins Englische.
Step 5 – Check: Is your message understandable? Add one reason or example.
Direct feedback
After a speaking task, give short feedback.
| Check | Yes / with help / not yet |
|---|---|
| I gave a clear main idea. | |
| I added a reason, example or next step. | |
| I reacted to the other person. | |
| I used a polite phrase. | |
| My message was understandable. |
Feedback sentence: I understood ... . One next step could be ... .
Do not correct every small accent or grammar detail. Correct first what blocks meaning.
Fehleranalyse
| Not clear / not standard | Better | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| I am agree. | I agree. | agree is a verb. |
| I think Monday better. | I think Monday is better. | The sentence needs is. |
| If I would have more time, I would practise. | If I had more time, I would practise. | In this pattern, use past form after if. |
| He say that he needs help. | He says that he needs help. | he needs s in the present. |
| You should to practise. | You should practise. | After should, use the base form. |
Repair strategy: Stop, simplify, say the idea again. Clear communication is the goal.
Media transfer

Watch one short section from one video again. Then do this without the video:
- Say one useful phrase from memory.
- Change it to your own school context.
- Use it in a 30–60 second partner dialogue.
Do not copy long video transcripts. Use the media to notice language, then make your own message.
Can-do-Check
Mark one: not yet – with help – on my own.
- I can give an opinion and a reason.
- I can describe a short past experience.
- I can give simple advice.
- I can use an if sentence for an imagined situation.
- I can disagree politely.
- I can suggest a fair solution.
- I can understand the main idea of a short dialogue.
- I can write a short connected text.
Next step: Choose one item marked with help or not yet and repeat one short task.
