E9 G - Recommend music without quoting lyrics
E9 G - Recommend music without quoting lyrics
Mini-Beschreibung: Recommend a song, artist, genre or instrumental track. Use mood, style and your personal response. Do not copy or quote protected song lyrics.
Level: English as a first foreign language, Year 9, G level, Baden-Württemberg.
Course path: English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again.
Start: Look at the picture. Think of one track you would recommend to a friend. Do not give lyrics. Say only: title or artist, genre, mood and one reason.
Media task: Watch part of the BBC Learning English video about music vocabulary. First listen without a transcript. Write down three words you understand. Watch again and add two more.
Einleitung
In this aiMOOC, you learn to recommend music in clear English. You do not need difficult words. Your main goal is communication: say what you recommend, describe the sound or mood, give a reason and react to another person.
You can recommend a song, an artist, a genre or an instrumental track. You may talk about titles, instruments, tempo, mood, style and your own response. Do not reproduce protected lyrics.
The course practises Hörverstehen, Sprechen, Schreiben, Leseverstehen, Sprachmittlung and Medienkompetenz. Clear communication is more important than a perfect accent.

Answer in simple English.
- Music mood: What music feels calm to you?
- Music style: Which genres do you know?
- Personal response: What makes a track interesting for you?
- Recommendation: What do you say when you want a friend to try something?
Useful start: “I like … because …” / “You could try …” / “It sounds …”
Listening and Viewing

Before listening: Name as many instruments as you can in English.
Now listen to short, freely licensed instrumental examples. No lyrics are needed.
Clip A: piano
Clip B: drums
Clip C: guitar
First listen: Choose one word for each clip: calm, energetic, soft, strong, bright, dark, relaxed, dramatic.
Second listen: Add one reason. Example: “Clip B sounds energetic because the beat is strong.”
Third listen: Compare two clips. Example: “Clip A is calmer than Clip B.”
Transcript rule: For spoken media, listen first. Use a transcript only after your first listening attempt.
Viewing: music and language
Task: The VOA Learning English video talks about music and language learning. Watch for the main idea. Do not copy song lyrics. Note only names, reasons and learning ideas.
Answer:
- What is the main topic?
- Which reason for learning with music do you understand?
- Do you agree? Give one short reason.
Reading
Read this fictional recommendation.
Maya’s pick
“I recommend an instrumental electronic track called Night Lines by the fictional artist Nova Lane. It has a steady beat and a calm but modern sound. I like it because it helps me focus. If you like electronic music without vocals, you might enjoy it too.”
Check your understanding:
- What does Maya recommend?
- What style is it?
- What is the mood?
- Why does Maya like it?
- Who might enjoy it?
Important: The profile and track above are fictional. Do not use private social-media data for class tasks.

| genre | a type of music | The genre is jazz. |
| beat | the regular pulse | It has a strong beat. |
| vocals | sung voice in music | The track has soft vocals. |

| energetic | full of energy | It sounds energetic. |
| relaxing | making you feel calm | I find it relaxing. |

Word choice tip: Use two or three good words. You do not need a long list.
Aussprache und Fluency

Speak in short groups, not word by word.
Chunk 1: I recommend this track / because it sounds calm.
Chunk 2: If you like rock music / you could try this artist.
Chunk 3: I like the beat / but the track is a little slow for me.
Fluency goal: Be easy to understand. A German accent is okay if your message is clear.
Practice: Read each chunk twice. Then say it once without reading.
Speaking
Use this four-step pattern:
| Step | Language |
|---|---|
| Recommend | I recommend … / You could try … |
| Describe | It sounds … / It has … |
| Reason | I like it because … |
| Ask | What kind of music do you like? |
Mini-dialogue
A: “I recommend an instrumental rock track. It has a strong guitar sound.”
B: “Why do you like it?”
A: “Because it gives me energy. What about you?”
B: “I prefer calm music, but I would try it.”
Speaking task: Work with a partner. Recommend one real or fictional track. Do not quote lyrics. Ask one follow-up question.

Help 2 – Add detail: “It has … / The mood is … / The beat is …”
Help 3 – React: “That sounds interesting.” / “I am not sure.” / “Why do you like it?”
Help 4 – Improve: Add a comparison: “It is calmer than …”
Writing
Write 60–90 words.
Task: Recommend one song, artist, genre or instrumental track to a classmate.
Use this structure:
- Name your recommendation.
- Describe mood, style or instruments.
- Give two reasons.
- Say who might like it.
- Finish with a question.
Model frame:
“I recommend … It is … The track sounds … I like it because … Another reason is … If you like …, you could try it. What kind of music do you enjoy?”
Do not copy lyrics. Keep your own writing. If you use AI feedback, check facts, sources and suggestions before changing your text.
Mediation
Your German-speaking friend says:
“Such mir etwas Ruhiges zum Lernen, am besten ohne Gesang. Ich mag Klavier, aber keine sehr schnelle Musik.”
Task: Tell an English-speaking classmate what your friend needs. Do not translate every word.
Possible start: “My friend is looking for calm study music. They prefer …”
Then ask for a recommendation.
Functional grammar
Focus on a few useful forms.
| Function | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| reason | because | I like it because the beat is strong. |
| contrast | but | It is slow, but I enjoy it. |
| result | so | It is relaxing, so I play it when I study. |
| recommendation | could | You could try this artist. |
| condition | if | If you like jazz, try this track. |
Accuracy target: Use because for a reason. Do not write: “because it is calm so I like it.” Choose one clear link.
Feedback and Fehleranalyse
Use the 4-check:
- Message: Can I understand the recommendation?
- Reason: Is there at least one clear reason?
- Question: Is there a useful follow-up question?
- Language: Check one grammar point, not everything at once.
Improve this: “I recommend it. Good beat. I like.”
Better: “I recommend it because it has a good beat. I like the energetic sound.”
Then use the improved pattern with a new track.
Safe and fair media use
- Use titles, artist names, genres, instruments and your own response.
