E8 G - Give a short presentation from notes
E8 G - Give a short presentation from notes

Mini-description: Give a short English presentation about a familiar topic. Use pictures and key words. Speak freely from notes. Do not read a full script.
Level: English as a first foreign language, Class 8, Baden-Württemberg, G level. Aim for about 60–90 seconds, a clear structure, connected ideas and one simple opinion with a reason.
Einleitung
You already know how to talk about familiar topics. Now you turn a few ideas into a short presentation.
Your rule: Pictures + key words → speak. Not: write every sentence → read.
Choose a safe, familiar topic such as Hobby, Sport, Lieblingsort, Schul-AG, Tier, Buch, Film or a weekend activity. Do not use private social-media data.
Media start – first try: Watch the British Council video once without a transcript. Notice only three things: How does a speaker start? How are ideas ordered? How often does the speaker look up?
I-can-Ziele
After this aiMOOC, you can say:
- I can give a short presentation about a familiar topic.
- I can use pictures and key words instead of a full script.
- I can connect ideas with simple linking words.
- I can give an opinion and a reason.
- I can speak clearly enough to be understood.
Vorwissen: Quick start
Say three sentences about a topic you know well.
Try first: “My topic is … / I like it because … / One interesting thing is …”
Ask: Which words do you still need?
Hint: Use a picture to remember your next idea.
Deutsch-Hilfe, falls nötig: Plane zuerst nur drei Aussagen. Übersetze nicht deinen ganzen deutschen Text.
Input: Build your short presentation
Step 1: Pick one clear topic
Good topics are easy for you to explain. You do not need expert knowledge.
Example topic: My favourite free-time activity
Possible content:
- What is it?
- When or where do you do it?
- Why do you like it?
- What should the audience remember?

Media task: Imagine each sticky note is one part of your talk. Give each note only one main idea.
Step 2: Use a simple four-part structure
| Part | What to do | Useful English |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | Name the topic. | Today I want to talk about … |
| Point 1 | Give the first important idea. | First, … |
| Point 2 | Add another idea and a reason. | Also, … / I like it because … |
| Closing | Finish with one message. | So, for me … / Thanks for listening. |
Keep it short. Two main points are enough on G level.
Step 3: Make note cards, not a script

Write key words, not complete sentences.
Good note card:
- skate park
- Saturdays
- friends
- fun + active
- favourite trick
Not helpful: a full paragraph that you will read word for word.
Quick test: Cover your notes. Can you still explain the idea in your own words? Then your notes work.
Step 4: Use pictures actively

A picture should help the audience understand your point. Do not add a picture only as decoration.
Try:
- show the picture,
- name what matters,
- explain why it is important.
Useful phrases: In this picture, you can see … This is important because … The picture shows …
Listening and Viewing
First viewing: understand the main idea
Watch this video once. Do not open the transcript yet.
Answer:
- What is the main topic?
- Name one useful presentation tip.
- Which visual element helps you follow the message?
Hint: You do not need every word.
Second viewing: listen for details
Watch again. Pause once or twice if needed.
Listen for:
- structure words,
- advice about visuals,
- one idea about making a presentation clear.
Transcript rule: Only after your second listening attempt, you may open the YouTube transcript or subtitles to check difficult parts.
Deutsch-Hilfe, falls nötig: Erst zweimal hören und Schlüsselwörter notieren. Das Transkript dient danach nur zum Prüfen.
Speaking model: opinions with reasons
Try: Give one opinion about presentations.
Model: “I think pictures are useful because they help the audience understand.”
Do not copy long phrases from the video. Use one or two useful expressions in your own presentation.
Reading
A short model plan
Fictional learner: Jamie
Jamie wants to present a favourite activity: cycling.
Jamie’s notes:
- topic: cycling
- weekends
- river path
- friend Sam
- healthy + relaxing
- favourite because outdoors
Jamie does not write a complete speech. The pictures show a bike and a river path. Jamie starts with the topic, gives two connected points and ends with an opinion: “For me, cycling is a great weekend activity because I can be outside and move.”
Before joining a cycling group, Jamie had tried several other activities. A photo was taken on a safe cycle path. These two forms are useful to understand, but on G level you do not need to force them into your own presentation.
Reading check: Why are Jamie’s notes useful? What is Jamie’s final opinion?
Kontextwortschatz
| Word or phrase | Simple meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| topic | what you talk about | My topic is cycling. |
| key word | a short memory word | “weekend” is a key word. |
| audience | people who listen | Look at the audience. |
| point | one main idea | My first point is … |
| reason | explains why | I like it because … |
| visual | picture, photo or simple graphic | This visual shows my hobby. |
| note card | a small card with key words | I use one note card. |
| clear | easy to understand | Speak slowly and clearly. |
Vocabulary strategy: Learn only the words you need for your topic. Check important facts and spellings.
Aussprache und Verständlichkeit
Goal: Be understandable. You do not need to sound like a native speaker.
Try these three habits:
- Speak in short chunks.
- Pause after an important point.
- Stress important words.
Example: My favourite activity / is cycling. / I usually go on Saturdays.
Try → ask → hint: Record yourself only if you want to. Listen privately. Ask: Can I understand my main points? Hint: If a sentence is too long, split it into two chunks.
Deutsch-Hilfe, falls nötig: Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit. Eine freiwillige Aufnahme bleibt privat und wird nicht ungefragt hochgeladen.
Functional grammar for G level
Recognise, do not force
On G level, some grammar is mainly receptive here.
Past perfect – recognise the earlier past: “Jamie had tried other activities before joining the group.”
Passive – recognise what happened: “The photo was taken on a cycle path.”
You do not need to use these forms in your talk if simpler English is clearer.
Reported speech without backshift
Use a simple present reporting frame:
Direct idea: Sam says, “Cycling is fun.”
Reported idea: Sam says cycling is fun.
Keep it simple. On G level, you do not need to practise backshift, reported questions or commands here.
Differentiation note: Productive passive, backshift, reported questions and commands belong to higher M/E demands in this sequence. Past perfect progressive is not a productive G-level target.
Speaking workshop
Plan in five minutes
Choose a topic. Then write:
- one title,
- two main points,
- one opinion,
- one reason,
- one closing phrase.
Use no more than about 15–20 key words in total.
Rehearse in three rounds
Round 1 – with notes: Speak slowly. Stop after each part.
Round 2 – with pictures: Look at the picture, then at your audience.
Round 3 – mini presentation: Speak for about 60–90 seconds without reading a full script.
If you lose your place, say: Let me check my notes. My next point is …
That is better than memorising every word.
Writing bridge
Write a short preparation message for a fictional classmate.
Task: 4–5 sentences.
Include:
- your topic,
- two points,
- one opinion with a reason,
- one question for feedback.
Starter help: “My topic is …” “I want to show …” “I think … because …” “Can you tell me if …?”
This is planning support, not a presentation script.
Mediation – optional
Read a short German notice about a familiar school event. Tell a partner the two most important points in simple English. Do not translate every sentence.
Strategy: meaning first → choose key information → use simple English.
Direct feedback
After a practice talk, a partner gives feedback on only four points.
| Check | Yes / almost / not yet | Helpful feedback |
|---|---|---|
| I understood the topic. | “Your topic was clear.” | |
| I heard two main points. | “Add one clearer link between the points.” | |
| The notes were short. | “Use fewer full sentences.” | |
| The voice was understandable. | “Pause after your first point.” |
Feedback rule: First say what worked. Then give one useful next step.
Fehleranalyse
| Problem | Why it happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Reading every word | Notes are too long. | Cut sentences into key words. |
| Too many ideas | The topic is too big. | Keep only two main points. |
| Speaking too fast | Nervousness or memorising. | Pause after each point. |
| Looking only at the screen | The visual becomes the script. | Look at the audience after naming the picture. |
| Difficult grammar blocks speaking | You try to sound “advanced”. | Use simpler correct English. |
Safe media and AI use
Use your own photos, school-approved material or legally reusable media such as Wikimedia Commons. Do not show private profiles, usernames, addresses, chats or personal social-media content.
Recordings are voluntary and private. Do not upload classmates’ voices or faces without permission.
If you use AI for ideas or feedback:
- check the language level,
- check facts,
- check whether feedback is sensible,
- keep your own wording and decisions.
AI should support your learning, not replace your own presentation.
Transfer
Choose a new familiar topic. You now get less help.
Transfer challenge:
- 2 pictures,
- 10–15 key words,
- 2 connected points,
- 1 opinion + reason,
- 60–90 seconds.
Possible topics: a useful app without private data, a local place, a school activity, a favourite meal, a sport, a book or a simple project.
Can-do-Check
Mark each statement: Yes / almost / not yet.
- I can plan with key words.
- I can speak without reading a full script.
- I can connect two ideas.
- I can give an opinion and a reason.
- I can use a picture to support my message.
- I can speak clearly enough to be understood.
If “not yet”: Repeat only the matching practice step. You do not need to restart the whole course.
Folgekurs
Next step: Answer questions after a short presentation.
