E8 G - Keep track of characters and events
E8 G - Keep track of characters and events
Mini-Beschreibung: Use a character chart and a chapter timeline to follow a longer story. You learn to answer: Who? What? When? Why? Zielgruppe: Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Klasse 8, Baden-Württemberg, G-Niveau.

Einleitung
Longer stories can be difficult because many things happen. Do not try to remember every detail. Track only the information that helps you understand the story.
Your strategy: character → event → chapter → connection.
English first: Read or listen first. Try. Ask. Use a hint. Use short German help only if you still need it. Do not translate the whole text.
I-can-Ziele
After this aiMOOC, you can say:
- I can name the main characters and their roles.
- I can put important events in the correct order.
- I can use a character chart and a chapter timeline.
- I can connect events with because, so, before, after and but.
- I can give a short summary with the most important information.
- I can explain my answer with one clear reason.
Vorwissen: Quick start
Try first.
- Think of a story, film or game you know. Name two characters.
- Say one important event from the beginning and one from the end.
- Complete: “The story changes when …”
Hint: You do not need many details. Choose events that change the story.
Medien-Einstieg: What does a storyboard do?

Look at the image.
- What can pictures help you remember?
- Why is order important?
- Which is easier to track: every detail or key events?
German help if needed: Ein Storyboard hält wichtige Schritte einer Handlung in einer Reihenfolge fest.
Two tools for a longer story
Tool 1: Character chart
| Character | What does the person want? | Important action | Connection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mia | finish the school display | keeps notes | works with Ben and Ava |
| Ben | protect the posters | moves poster tubes | works with Mia and Ava |
| Ava | organise materials | remembers where things were | works with Mia and Ben |
Tool 2: Chapter timeline
| Chapter | Key event | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | The class prepares a display. | A blue folder is still there. |
| Tuesday | The folder is missing. | The problem starts. |
| Wednesday | The group follows the movement of the poster tubes. | A useful clue appears. |
| Thursday | The folder is found. | The problem is solved. |

Rule: Add only events that change the situation, explain a clue or solve a problem.
Listening and Viewing 1: Story elements
First viewing: Watch without opening a transcript. Listen for only three words: character, setting, plot.
Try:
- What is a character?
- What is a setting?
- What is a plot?
Second viewing: Watch again. Now you may use subtitles or the transcript.
Feedback: If you can explain the three words with simple English, that is enough. You do not need every sentence from the video.
Kontextwortschatz
| Word | Easy English | German help |
|---|---|---|
| character | a person in a story | Figur |
| event | something that happens | Ereignis |
| chapter | one part of a longer text | Kapitel |
| timeline | events in time order | Zeitleiste |
| clue | a detail that helps you understand | Hinweis |
| relationship | how characters are connected | Beziehung |
| cause | why something happens | Ursache |
| result | what happens because of it | Folge |
| summary | a short version with key points | Zusammenfassung |
Try before German help: Read the Easy English column first.
Aussprache: Clear before perfect
Say the words slowly, then in a short sentence.
- character: stress the first syllable.
- event: stress the second syllable.
- chapter: stress the first syllable.
- timeline: stress the first syllable.
Practice: “This event is important.” – “Mia is a main character.”
Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit.
Reading: The Blue Folder
This is a fictional school story. All people are invented.
Chapter 1 – Monday
Mia, Ben and Ava are preparing a display for the school open day. The blue folder has all the short texts for the posters. Mia checks the pages and puts the folder on a chair. Ben carries three poster tubes to the other side of the room. Ava cuts labels and puts the scissors back in a box. At the end of the lesson, the teacher asks the group to clear the room quickly.
Try: Who touches or moves something important?
Hint: Track actions, not clothes, colours or small details.
Chapter 2 – Tuesday
The next morning, the blue folder is gone. Mia wants to search the whole school, but Ava says they should first write down what happened. Ben remembers that he moved the poster tubes after the lesson. Then rain started, so he carried the tubes to the library. Mia makes a timeline. Ava adds that the folder was close to the tubes on Monday.
Try: Which two details should go on the timeline?
Feedback: The movement of the tubes and the folder's last known place are key events.
Chapter 3 – Wednesday
The group goes to the library. The folder is not on a table. A librarian says that she found a blue folder under a poster tube. She put it in a box marked “School Open Day”. Mia notices that the group had followed the posters, but not the box. They check the storage list before they continue.
Try: What new clue changes the search?
Hint: Look for new information from a character.
Chapter 4 – Thursday
The group finds the box in a storage room. The blue folder is inside. It was placed there with other materials from the open day. Nobody had taken it on purpose. Mia updates the character chart and the timeline. Ben says the notes helped them avoid wrong guesses. Ava adds one final rule: “Track what characters do, not what you think they did.”
Try: Why did the chart and timeline help?
Possible answer: They connected people, actions and time. The group could check clues instead of guessing.
Reading strategy: Stop after each chapter
After each chapter, write only three short notes:
- Who? Which character matters here?
- What? What key event happens?
- Change? What is different now?
Use arrows if it helps:
Ben moves tubes → rain starts → tubes go to library → folder is found near a tube → box becomes the next clue.
Figurenübersicht zum Text
| Character | Role now | Evidence from the text | Update? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mia | organiser | makes a timeline | learns to check actions before guessing |
| Ben | mover of materials | carries poster tubes | his action explains the folder's route |
| Ava | careful observer | remembers the folder was near the tubes | adds a useful clue |
| Librarian | helper | reports where she found the folder | connects the tube with the box |
Important: Evidence comes from the text. A guess is not evidence.
Chapter timeline zum Text
| Time | Event | Cause or result |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | The folder is near the poster tubes. | This becomes important later. |
| Tuesday | Ben says he moved the tubes to the library. | Rain changed the place of the materials. |
| Wednesday | The librarian reports a folder under a tube. | The group now follows the box. |
| Thursday | The group finds the folder. | The search ends with evidence. |
Listening and Viewing 2: Summarise, do not retell everything
First viewing: Watch once without transcript. Listen for the difference between too little, too much and key information.
Try: Which information belongs in a good summary?
Second viewing: Use subtitles or transcript only now.
Transfer to our story: A useful summary names the main characters, the problem, the key actions and the result. It does not list every object in the room.
Functional grammar: Notice it, do not force it
At G-level, some forms are mainly for understanding.
Past perfect – receptive: “The group had followed the posters, but not the box.” Meaning: One past action happened before another past point.
Passive – receptive: “The folder was placed in a box.” Meaning: The action is important; the person who did it is not central here.
Reported speech without backshift: “The librarian says that she put the folder in the box.” Use it to pass on information clearly.
Do not build long grammar exercises from these forms. First understand what the sentence means in the story.
Speaking: 30-second chapter update
Use this small frame:
In this chapter, … The important character is … because … First …, then … This matters because …
Speak to a partner or record yourself only if you want to. Keep recordings private unless everyone has clearly agreed to share them. No unasked uploads.
Writing: Short event report
Write 80–100 words about the missing folder.
Use this structure:
- Situation: What was missing?
- Sequence: What happened first, next and later?
- Evidence: Which clue helped?
- Result: Where was the folder found?
- Reason: Why were the chart and timeline useful?
Useful connectors: first, then, after that, because, so, but, finally.
Check: Your text should be connected, not a list of single sentences.
Mediation: Help a classmate
A German-speaking classmate missed the lesson. Explain in German in 3–4 sentences how to use a character chart and a timeline. Keep the English key terms. Do not translate the whole story.
Gestufte Hilfen
Help 1 – Ask yourself: Who acts? What changes?
Help 2 – Look back: Check the last sentence of the chapter and one action by a main character.
Help 3 – Use the frame: “___ does ___. This matters because ___.”
Help 4 – German support: Suche nur nach Figur, Handlungsschritt und Folge. Übersetze nicht den ganzen Absatz.
Direct feedback and Fehleranalyse
If your answer is wrong, find the error type.
- Character mix-up: You gave an action to the wrong person. Check the character chart.
- Order error: You mixed up before and after. Check the timeline.
- Detail overload: You included small details but missed the key event. Ask: “What changes?”
- Guess without evidence: You wrote what you think happened. Add a line from the story or a clear text detail.
- Grammar overload: You tried to use a difficult form that was not needed. Choose a clear simple sentence.
Repair task: Correct one answer and explain in one sentence what you changed.
Transfer: A story from your own reading
Choose a longer text from class. After two chapters, make:
- one character chart with 3–5 characters,
- one timeline with 4–6 key events,
- one short summary of about 60 words.
Do not copy full passages. Use your own words.
AI and digital safety
AI may help you check a level, a fact or feedback, but it must not replace your own reading or your own text. Check AI answers against the story. Do not send private recordings, private profiles or personal social-media data to external services. Use fictional profiles in practice tasks.
Can-do-Check
| I can … | Yes | Not yet |
|---|---|---|
| find the main characters | □ | □ |
| choose key events | □ | □ |
| put events in time order | □ | □ |
| give a reason with because | □ | □ |
| write a short connected summary | □ | □ |
If you mark “Not yet”, return to the character chart or chapter timeline first.
