E7 G - Learn words in chunks and collocations

Mini-Beschreibung: Learn common word combinations and sentence chunks. Use them as ready-made language for speaking and writing.

Einleitung

English words often come together in useful groups. These groups are called chunks or collocations.

Examples:

  1. take a break
  2. do your homework
  3. have a good time
  4. I think that ...
  5. Would you like to ...?

Do not learn only one word. Learn a small language block.

Try first: Which sounds better?

make homework or do homework?

Hint: English speakers usually use the same words together.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Eine Kollokation ist eine typische Wortverbindung. Ein Chunk ist ein Satzbaustein, den Du direkt benutzen kannst.

I can ...

After this mini-course, you can say:

  1. I can notice common word combinations.
  2. I can understand useful chunks in short texts and videos.
  3. I can use chunks in short conversations.
  4. I can use chunks in connected sentences.
  5. I can check and improve my own language.

Before you start

What do you already know?

Say or write one sentence for each starter:

  1. I usually ...
  2. After school, I ...
  3. At the weekend, I ...

Now underline two or three words that belong together.

Example: play football.

Datei:Tarjetas para aprender vocabulario.jpg

Tip: Learn the two words together: play football, not only football.

Notice: Words that like to stay together

Some words are often used together.

Chunk / collocation Short example Meaning help
do homework I do my homework after school. Hausaufgaben machen
make a mistake I made a mistake. einen Fehler machen
take a break Let's take a break. eine Pause machen
have fun We had fun. Spaß haben
get ready I get ready at seven. sich fertig machen
spend time I spend time with my friends. Zeit verbringen

Notice: The full chunk is useful. Do not translate every word separately.

Mini-check

Choose the natural chunk:

  1. do homework – not make homework
  2. make a mistake – not do a mistake
  3. take a break – not make a break
  4. have fun – not make fun when you mean „Spaß haben“

Listening and Viewing

First watch – no transcript.

Watch only a short part first. Listen for word combinations. You do not need to understand every word.

Task 1: Write down one word pair you hear or see.

Task 2: Watch again. Add the word before or after it.

Example: take + a break.

Hint: Look for words that appear together again and again.

Deutsch-Hilfe, falls nötig: Beim ersten Hören reicht es, bekannte Wörter und wiederkehrende Wortgruppen zu erkennen. Nutze ein Transkript erst nach dem ersten Hörversuch.

Quick viewing transfer

Look at this picture.

Which chunks could fit?

  1. ask a question
  2. work together
  3. listen carefully
  4. give an answer

Make one short sentence:

They are ...

Understand chunks in context

Read this short text.

Mia's afternoon

Mia gets home at three. First, she takes a break. Then she does her homework. Sometimes she makes a mistake, but she checks her work. Later, she spends time with her friend Noah. They have fun and talk about school.

Try: Find five chunks.

Hint: Look for a verb plus another word.

Check: take a break – do homework – make a mistake – spend time – have fun – talk about

Reading: Find the useful language

Read the dialogue.

Sam: Do you want to work together?

Lea: Good idea. I need help with question four.

Sam: No problem. Let's take a look.

Lea: Thanks. I think I made a mistake.

Sam: That's okay. We can try again.

Find these functions:

  1. asking to work together
  2. saying yes
  3. asking for help
  4. reacting in a friendly way
  5. suggesting another try

Possible chunks: Do you want to ...? – Good idea. – I need help with ... – No problem. – Let's ... – We can try again.

Vocabulary in context

Learn chunks in small groups.

School

  1. do homework
  2. ask a question
  3. take notes
  4. make a mistake
  5. work together

Free time

  1. have fun
  2. spend time with friends
  3. play a game
  4. listen to music
  5. take a break

Talking to someone

  1. I think that ...
  2. I agree.
  3. I'm not sure.
  4. What do you think?
  5. Can you help me?

Mini-transfer: Pick three chunks. Use them in three connected sentences.

Pronunciation: Say the chunk as one unit

Chunks often sound like one small rhythm group.

Try:

TAKE a BREAK

DO your HOMEwork

MAKE a misTAKE

HAVE some FUN

Do not worry about sounding like a native speaker. Clear speech is more important than accent.

Try: Say each chunk slowly once. Then say it at normal speed.

Optional: Record yourself privately and listen once. Recording is voluntary. Do not upload your recording unless your teacher gives a safe, agreed task.

Speaking

Work with a partner or speak both roles yourself.

A: What do you do after school?

B: First, I ________. Then I ________.

A: Do you ever ________?

B: Yes, sometimes. / No, not often.

Word bank: do my homework – take a break – spend time with friends – listen to music – play a game

Feedback check:

  1. Did you use two chunks?
  2. Did you speak in connected sentences?
  3. Could your partner understand you?

Speaking challenge

Use these three chunks in a mini-dialogue:

Can you help me? – No problem. – Let's try again.

Keep the dialogue short: four to six lines.

Writing

Write 4–6 connected sentences about your afternoon.

Writing frame:

After school, I usually ________.

First, I ________.

Then I ________.

Sometimes I ________.

Later, I ________.

I like this because ________.

Word bank: get home – take a break – do homework – listen to music – spend time with friends – have fun

Check your text:

  1. I used at least three chunks.
  2. My sentences are easy to understand.
  3. I checked verb forms.
  4. I did not replace my own text with an AI text.

Functional grammar

You do not need a new grammar rule for every chunk. Use the chunk inside grammar you already know.

Present: I take a break after school.

Past: Yesterday I took a break at four.

Question: Do you take a break after school?

The chunk stays useful, but the verb can change.

Controlled E-look ahead: You may later meet forms such as had finished. For now, do not use the past perfect unless your teacher asks for it.

Mediation mini-task

Your German-speaking friend wants to join an English school club. Explain these three ideas in simple English:

  1. „Frag nach Hilfe.“
  2. „Arbeitet zusammen.“
  3. „Macht eine Pause, wenn es zu viel wird.“

Use chunks you know.

Possible help: ask for help – work together – take a break

Do not translate word by word. Give the main message.

Feedback and improve

Read your sentence:

I make my homework after school.

Notice the problem.

Hint: Which verb goes with homework?

Improve it:

I do my homework after school.

Now improve one sentence of your own.

This is the learning cycle:

notice → understand → try → use → communicate → feedback → improve → use again

Safe learning with media and AI

Use school-approved tools and media.

  1. Keep recordings private unless sharing is clearly agreed.
  2. Do not upload private profiles, names or social-media data.
  3. If you use AI feedback, check whether the language fits your level.
  4. AI may suggest useful chunks, but it should not replace your own writing.
  5. Ask: Can I understand this phrase? Can I use it myself?

Mini-transfer

Imagine a new student joins your class.

Use at least four chunks to help them.

Start like this:

Hi! If you need help, ...

Possible chunks:

ask a question – work together – take notes – take a break – No problem. – Let's try again.

Self-check: Can you do it?

I can ... Yes Almost Not yet
notice a common word combination □ □ □
use do homework correctly □ □ □
use a chunk in a short dialogue □ □ □
write four connected sentences with chunks □ □ □
improve a wrong collocation □ □ □

Next step: Reuse five chunks tomorrow. A chunk becomes useful when you meet and use it again.
