E8 G - Making choices – Entscheidungen ausdrücken
E8 G - Making choices – Entscheidungen ausdrücken
Mini-Beschreibung: You describe simple decision situations and give a clear reason for your choice. Du arbeitest mit vertrauten Situationen, kurzen Dialogen und decision cards. English comes first. German help is only used when you really need it.

Look at the picture. You are at a fork in the road. What can you say?
Try first: “I’d choose … because …”
Course routine: English first → understand the context → try → ask a partner → use a hint → use short German help if needed.
Einleitung
In this aiMOOC you practise how to make a choice and explain it. The language stays clear and useful for everyday situations at school, at home and in your free time.
Important: All profiles and dialogues in this course are fictional. Do not use private social-media data. Recordings are voluntary and stay private unless you decide otherwise. Do not upload recordings or texts to external services without permission.
I-can-Ziele
- I can make a choice: I can say what I choose.
- I can give a reason: I can use because to explain my choice.
- I can react: I can agree, disagree or ask a simple question.
- I can understand: I can follow a short, clear dialogue about a choice.
- I can write: I can write a short connected text with a choice and reasons.
- I can mediate: I can pass on the main idea in simple English without translating every word.
Vorwissen: Quick start
Choose one option and finish the sentence.
A: bus or bike B: film or game C: work alone or with a partner
Model: “I’d choose the bike because it is quick.”
Try before you read the help.
Hint 1: I’d choose … Hint 2: I prefer … because … German help if needed: because = weil; reason = Grund; choice = Wahl.
Media start: What is a choice?
Viewing task 1: Watch a short part without subtitles. Write down two words or phrases connected to choosing.
Viewing task 2: Watch again. Pause when you hear a useful phrase.
Only after your first try: use subtitles or the platform transcript.
Decision cards
| Card | Situation | Choice A | Choice B | Your sentence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | After school | basketball practice | meet a friend | I’d choose … because … |
| 2 | Saturday | go to the library | go to the park | I prefer … because … |
| 3 | Class project | make a poster | make a short video | For me, … is better because … |
| 4 | School trip | take the bus | walk | I think we should … because … |
Rule: Give one clear choice and at least one clear reason.
Context words
| English | Simple meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| choice | an option you select | This is my choice. |
| decide | choose after thinking | We need to decide. |
| reason | why you choose something | My reason is simple. |
| prefer | like one option more | I prefer the bus. |
| because | gives a reason | I choose it because it is cheap. |
| instead | another option | Let’s walk instead. |
| agree | have the same opinion | I agree with you. |
| disagree | have a different opinion | I disagree because it takes too long. |
Functional grammar: choice + reason
The main pattern is simple:
I’d choose + option + because + reason.
Examples:
“I’d choose the bus because it is faster.”
“I prefer the park because we can meet outside.”
“I think the poster is better because it is easier to make.”
Use because actively. You may also hear as and since as reason words, but you do not need to force them into your own answers.
First watch: Which three reason words are introduced? Second watch: Focus on because. After the listening try: use subtitles or transcript if needed.
Receptive grammar: recognise, do not force
At G level, some forms are mainly for understanding.
Past perfect: “They had decided before the lesson started.” You only need to understand that one past action happened before another past action.
Passive: “The plan was changed.” You only need to understand what happened. You do not need to build difficult passive sentences in this course.
Reported speech without backshift: “Maya says she prefers the bus.” You can understand that one person reports another person’s idea.
Do not force these forms into your speaking or writing. Clear simple English is better.
Listening and Viewing

Mini listening: A school project
Ask a partner or your teacher to read the dialogue once at a moderate speed. Keep the transcript closed during the first try.
Task 1: What are the two choices? Task 2: What does Jamie choose? Task 3: What reason does Jamie give?
Transcript – open only after your first listening try
Alex: We need to decide. A poster or a short video?
Jamie: I’d choose the poster.
Alex: Why?
Jamie: Because it is easier to finish today. We already have the pictures.
Alex: Good point. I agree.
Direct feedback: A strong answer includes choice + because + reason.
Reading
Decision card: The class activity
Nora’s class can choose one activity for Friday afternoon. One option is a sports challenge in the gym. The other option is a quiz in the classroom. Nora prefers the quiz because everyone can take part and the class already has the questions. Ben prefers the sports challenge because he wants to move after a long school week. They listen to each other and then vote.
Try:
- What does Nora prefer?
- What is Nora’s reason?
- What does Ben prefer?
- What is Ben’s reason?
- Which choice would you make? Give one reason.
Hint: “I’d choose … because …”
Pronunciation: clear chunks

Speak in short meaning groups:
I’d CHOOSE the BUS / because it’s FASTer.
I preFER the QUIZ / because EVERYone can JOIN.
Focus on clear words and sentence stress. Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit.
Private practice: Say your sentence twice. A recording is optional. Keep it private unless you want to share it.
Speaking: short dialogues

Dialogue model
A: Which option do you prefer? B: I’d choose the park because we can be outside. A: I prefer the library because it is quieter. B: That’s true. What about the weather? A: Good point. Let’s check.
Now use one decision card. Speak for about 30–45 seconds with one partner.
Try first.
Ask: “What does prefer mean?” or “Can you repeat that?”
Hint: Use one of these only if needed: “I think …” / “I prefer …” / “because …” / “What do you think?”

Extra speaking media: Would you rather?
Use the video for short choice questions. You do not need long answers.
Model: “I’d rather choose A because …”
If that form feels difficult, use the easier course form:
“I’d choose A because …”
Writing: a short choice message
Write 60–90 words.
Situation: Your class can choose between a picnic in the park and an afternoon at a local museum.
Use this simple structure:
Opening: I think we should choose … Reason 1: First, … because … Reason 2: Also, … Finish: So my choice is …
Less help: Remove the sentence starters and write your own connected version.
Check:
- Did you name your choice?
- Did you give at least two reasons?
- Did you use because correctly?
- Can a classmate understand your message easily?
Mediation: main idea, not full translation
Your German-speaking classmate says:
“Der Park ist kostenlos und wir können dort zusammen essen. Bei Regen wäre das Museum aber praktischer.”
An English-speaking exchange student asks what the classmate means.
Try in simple English. Do not translate every word.
Possible answer: “The park is free and good for eating together, but the museum is better if it rains.”
Feedback and Fehleranalyse
Error 1: “I choose the bus because is fast.” Better: “I choose the bus because it is fast.”
Error 2: “I prefer go to the park.” Better: “I prefer the park.” or “I prefer going to the park.”
Error 3: “I am agree.” Better: “I agree.”
Error 4: One-word answer: “Bus.” Better: “I’d choose the bus because it is faster.”
Feedback rule: First check meaning. Then check one language point. Do not correct everything at once.
Help ladder
- Try: Say or write your own answer.
- Ask: Ask a partner to repeat or explain.
- Hint: Use “I’d choose … because …”.
- Word help: Look at the context words.
- German help: Use a short German clue only if needed.
AI and digital tools
AI can help you check whether a sentence is understandable, but it should not replace your own text.
- Write your own first version.
- Ask for one clear type of feedback, for example: “Is my reason clear?”
- Check the suggestion yourself.
- Keep only changes you understand.
- Do not enter private data, private messages or real social-media profiles.
- Do not upload recordings without permission.
- Facts, language level and feedback from AI tools must be checked.

Transfer
Use the same language in a new situation:
Your class has €50 for a small class activity. Choose one: a game afternoon, a shared breakfast or materials for a creative project.
Give your choice and two reasons. Then listen to one different opinion before you decide again.
Folgekurs
Next step: Giving opinions – Meinungen äußern und begründen.
There you can compare ideas, react to another opinion and give more than one connected reason.
