Mini-description: In this aiMOOC, you create a short book recommendation in English. You give useful information, your opinion and reasons — but you do not spoil the story.

Look at the picture. Think for 30 seconds.

Try English first: What kinds of books can you name? Which books do you like?

Hint: You can use words such as adventure, fantasy, mystery, funny, exciting, interesting.

Notice: What is a book recommendation?

A book recommendation is short. It gives enough information to make another person curious, but it does not tell the ending.

A useful recommendation often has five parts:

Book facts: title, author, genre
Story idea: main character, setting, basic problem
Opinion: what you like or do not like
Reasons: why you think this
Recommendation: who may enjoy the book

While watching: Listen for ideas about a book talk. You do not need to understand every word. Find two ideas that can help you present a book.

Vocabulary in context

Word choice: Use precise adjectives: funny, exciting, surprising, moving, interesting, easy to read, fast-paced.

A spoiler-safe rule

Use the three-detail rule:

Say who the main character is.
Say where the story starts or what the main situation is.
Say what kind of challenge appears.

Then stop before an important solution, twist or ending.

Example with fictional data: Mia is a twelve-year-old girl who moves to a small town. She finds a strange key in the school library. Soon she wants to discover what it opens.

This example is invented for the course. It is not taken from a published book.

Practise: build your recommendation

Step 1: book facts

Complete these sentences with your own book.

The title is ... The author is ... It is a ... book.

Hint: genre words: adventure, fantasy, mystery, science fiction, comic, realistic story, non-fiction.

Step 2: basic story idea

Use two or three sentences.

The main character is ... The story takes place in ... At the beginning, ...

Step 3: opinion and reasons

Useful phrases:

I like this book because ... My favourite thing about the book is ... because ... The story is ... I think the characters are ... I recommend this book to readers who like ...

Better reason: Do not only say It is good. Explain why.

Example: I like the book because the mystery is easy to follow but still surprising.

Step 4: connect your ideas

Use simple connectors:

and · but · because · so · also · first · finally

Example: The story is exciting, but it also has funny moments. I recommend it because the characters are easy to remember.

Pronunciation and speaking

Say these phrases slowly, then naturally:

I recommend this book. The main character is ... My favourite part is ... I like it because ... You may enjoy this book if ...

Pronunciation focus:

In recommend, stress the last part: -mend.
In character, stress the first part: char-.
In a sentence, stress important words: I recommend this book because it is funny.

Speaking tip: Clear speech is more important than sounding like a native speaker.

Private practice: You may record yourself only if you want to. Keep the recording private unless you choose to share it. No upload is needed.

I recommend it to readers who like puzzles and short adventures.

Solution idea: Your own text can be different. Check whether all seven points above are present.
