Understand: Listen in smart steps

This audio has two speakers. Do not read a full transcript first.

Round 1 – Listen: What is the situation?

Round 2 – Key words: Listen for movie, TV and tonight.

Round 3 – Pause: Stop after a short part.

Round 4 – Speed: If needed, choose a slower playback speed.

Round 5 – Repeat: Repeat one short sentence.

Hint: The speakers talk about plans for the evening.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Du musst nicht jedes Wort verstehen. Höre auf Schlüsselwörter.

Example: “Hello, Alice! How are you?”

Solution help: Frank asks Alice about an activity for the evening. Alice has another plan.

Practise: The four-step listening loop

Use this loop with any short English audio:

Listen once without stopping.
Pause after one short sentence.
Repeat the sentence.
Listen again and check.

If the audio is still too fast, change the playback speed a little. Then return to normal speed later.

Important: Slow audio is a learning tool. It is not the final goal.

Pronunciation: Clear is the goal

You do not need to sound like one special accent. The goal is: People can understand you.

Watch only a short part if you need it.

For one common sound, try this short BBC Learning English video:

Small focus 1: In think, let a little air move between tongue and teeth.

Small focus 2: In a sentence, make the important words a little stronger.

Practice sentence: “I PAUSE and REPEAT the audio.”

Hint: Do not copy every detail. Copy the rhythm and the key words.

Use this model:

Hi, I’m Sam. I practise English with audio. I pause and repeat. I listen again.

Now change one or two parts.

Recording rule: Your recording is optional and private. Save it only on your own device or use a school tool chosen by your teacher. You do not need to upload it.

Read: Lina’s audio routine

Lina practises English for five minutes. First, she listens to a short audio. Then she pauses after one sentence. She repeats it two times. The speaker is fast, so Lina uses a slower playback speed. After that, she listens again at normal speed. At the end, she records one sentence and checks: Is my voice clear?

Question 1: Why does Lina change the speed?

Question 2: What does she do at the end?

Hint: Find the words fast and records.

Solution: She changes the speed because the speaker is fast. At the end, she records one sentence and checks if it is clear.

Try English first.

Hint: Use pause, speed and repeat.

Listen to your own short recording only if you chose to make one.

Do not judge an accent. Focus on understanding.

Now repeat your voice note one more time.

Try: Make only one change.

Speak a little more slowly.
Make one key word stronger.
Say one difficult word more clearly.

Then listen again. Stop when the message is easy to understand.

Use fictional names and data in practice tasks.
Keep your own recording private unless you choose to share it in a teacher-approved setting.
Do not upload classmates’ voices without permission.
