E7 G - Living in the countryside

Einleitung

Look first. What can you see? Say three easy words in English. You can point first, then speak.

Try: I can see ... / There is ... / There are ...

Help if you need it: field = Feld, village = Dorf, road = Straße.

Countryside life is different from place to place. A village can have farms, homes, shops, buses, schools or sports clubs. Not every village is the same. In this course, you use short English sentences to describe pictures, understand simple texts and talk about life in the countryside.

= I can ...

  1. I can name simple things in the countryside.
  2. I can describe a picture with There is ... and There are ....
  3. I can compare two pictures with but and a simple comparative.
  4. I can understand a short text and a short video.
  5. I can say and write what I like or do not like, with a reason.

= What do you know already?

Look at the two pictures again. Say or write words you already know.

Try first: house – road – tree – field – ...

Mini-check: Can you make one sentence? Example: There are trees.

Media start: See and compare

Look at the pictures. Do not translate every word. Use what you can see.

Picture A: There are sheep. There are fields.

Picture B: There is a narrow road. There are trees.

Compare: Picture A is more open, but picture B has more trees.

Your turn: In picture A, I can see ... . In picture B, I can see ... .

Hint: more = mehr, but = aber.

Vocabulary in context

Use the words in short chunks. You do not need to learn a long list.

English Easy chunk Hilfe
countryside live in the countryside auf dem Land
village a small village Dorf
field green fields Feld
farm work on a farm Bauernhof / landwirtschaftlicher Betrieb
sheep sheep in a field Schafe
quiet It is quiet. ruhig
bus stop wait at the bus stop Bushaltestelle
village shop go to the village shop Dorfladen

Notice: A village can have services such as a shop or a bus. The pictures show examples, not rules for every rural place.

Reading: Maya in Greenhill

Maya is a fictional student.

Maya is 13. She lives in Greenhill, a small village. There are fields near her home. There is a shop and a bus stop. Maya often walks or cycles to her friend's house. She likes the quiet evenings and the open space. She does not like waiting for the bus when it is late. On Saturdays, she sometimes goes to a town with her family.

Try first: What does Maya like? What is sometimes difficult?

Hint: Find likes and does not like.

Hilfe: waiting = warten, open space = freie Fläche / viel Platz.

= Reading check

  1. Complete: Maya lives in a small ...
  2. Find one thing near her home.
  3. Find one thing she likes.
  4. Find one thing she does not like.
  5. Say one sentence about your area: Near my home, there is ...

Direct feedback: If you found village, fields, quiet evenings and waiting for the bus, you understood the key points. If not, read only the sentence with the matching word again.

Listening and viewing

First, watch without subtitles for a short time. Listen for words you know. Then watch again and use subtitles if they help.

First viewing – try: Which things do you notice? farm – animals – garden – water – family

Second viewing – check: Choose three words you really heard or saw.

After listening: Say one short sentence: I saw ... or I heard ...

Help: You do not need every word. Catch the main idea.

= A second short viewing

This video uses slow, simple English about a quiet day in the countryside.

Try: Listen once without reading. Then watch again. What feels similar to Maya's text? What feels different?

= Mini listening script

Ask a partner or teacher to read this text slowly two times. Do not read the transcript before the first listening.

Listening questions: Where does Ben live? How does he get to school? What does he like?

Transcript – read only after listening:

Hi, I'm Ben. I live in a small village. There are fields behind our house. I take the bus to school. In the afternoon, I often walk my dog. I like the fresh air, but I sometimes miss the big sports centre in town.

Check: village – bus – fresh air.

Pronunciation

Speak clearly. A perfect accent is not the goal. Being easy to understand is the goal.

Word Say it in parts Try it
countryside COUN-try-side I live in the countryside.
village VIL-lage It is a small village.
quiet QUI-et It is quiet here.
field field There are fields.

Try: Read one model sentence slowly. Then say it again a little more naturally.

Functional grammar

Use grammar to say something useful.

= There is / There are

One thing: There is a shop.

More than one: There are fields.

Try: Look at a picture and make two sentences.

= Simple present

Routine: Maya cycles to her friend's house.

Negative: She does not like waiting.

Try: I live ... / I go ... / I like ... / I do not like ...

= Compare with simple words

Model: The village is quieter than the town.

Model: There is more open space in picture A.

Model: I like the countryside because it is quiet.

Useful chunks: quieter than – more space – less traffic – but – because

Direct feedback: A good comparison names both sides: A is ..., but B is ...

= E-Ausblick: Past perfect – only notice

This is only a small look ahead. You do not need to use it freely now.

Before Maya moved to Greenhill, she had lived in a town.

Notice: had lived shows an earlier past action. For this G-level course, recognising the form is enough.

Speaking

Work with a partner. Use the pictures.

Step 1 – notice: Name two things.

Step 2 – say: There is ... / There are ...

Step 3 – compare: Picture A is ..., but picture B is ...

Step 4 – opinion: I would like / would not like to live there because ...

Sentence starters: I can see ... / There is ... / There are ... / I like ... because ... / For me, ...

Help if needed: ruhig = quiet, nah = near, weit weg = far away.

Writing

Write 5–7 connected sentences about a fictional village.

Writing frame:

My village is called ... . It is ... . There is ... . There are ... . I like ... because ... . One problem is ... . I think ... .

Word bank: village – field – shop – bus stop – quiet – green – near – far – like – because – but

Check your text: Did you use a full stop? Did you use There is or There are? Did you give one reason?

Mediation

Your German-speaking classmate says: In unserem Dorf gibt es einen Laden und eine Bushaltestelle. Der Bus fährt nicht oft. Ich mag aber die ruhige Umgebung.

Tell an English-speaking visitor the key information in 2–3 easy English sentences. Do not translate every word.

Start: There is ... . There is also ... . The bus ... . My classmate likes ... .

Feedback: The main message is more important than a word-for-word translation.

Mini transfer

Imagine a new place called Riverdale. It has a small shop, many fields, a bus every hour and a sports field.

  1. Say two facts about Riverdale.
  2. Compare Riverdale with your area.
  3. Give one good point and one difficult point.

Model: Riverdale has many fields. It is quieter than my area, but the bus does not come very often.

Safe and smart learning

Your own work matters. No external AI tool is needed for this course. If AI feedback is used in class, the teacher should check that the language fits your level. Improve your own text; do not replace it with a new text from a tool.

Recordings are optional. Keep recordings private unless you and your teacher have agreed on sharing. Do not upload private names, addresses, photos or social-media data.

Self-check: Can do

I can ... Yes A little Not yet
name five countryside words □ □ □
describe a picture with There is / There are □ □ □
understand the main idea of a short text □ □ □
compare two pictures with but □ □ □
give an opinion with because □ □ □

Improve: Choose one Not yet point. Go back to that section. Try one task again.

Follow-up course

Next, you can compare rural and urban life in more detail: E7 G – City life.
