E6 M - Read a short information text

Reading gets easier when you use more than words. Headings, pictures, maps and captions can help you find the topic before you read every sentence. In this E6-M course, you read a short information text about Bristol and practise how to use headings and visual clues.

Einleitung

Mini-description: Read a short, age-appropriate information text about a city. Use headings and visual clues to find key information.

Learning language: English first. German is help, not a full translation.

Course route: Notice → understand → practise → use → feedback → use again.

Privacy and media: All learner names and personal data in tasks are fictional. If you record your voice, keep the recording private unless you choose to share it. Do not upload school work, photos or voice recordings without permission. External AI is not needed. If you use AI voluntarily, check the result and write the final version in your own words.

I can ...

  1. I can use headings: I can predict what a short text is about.
  2. I can use visual clues: I can use a photo or map to understand a text.
  3. I can find key information: I can answer simple questions about place, sights and activities.
  4. I can speak briefly: I can give a short recommendation with connected sentences.
  5. I can write a mini information text: I can write four to six clear sentences with a heading.

Quick start: Look first, read later

Look at the photo. Do not read the text below yet.

Try English first: What can you see? Say or write three words.

<details><summary>Hint</summary>Think of water, boats, buildings and people.</details> <details><summary>German help</summary>Nenne drei Dinge, die Du auf dem Bild erkennst. Einzelne englische Wörter reichen.</details> <details><summary>Example</summary>I can see water, boats and buildings.</details>

Before reading: Use visual clues

A map is also a clue. Find the water, the railway station and one place you would like to visit.

Think: What kind of place is Bristol: a village, a city, a mountain or a desert?

<details><summary>Hint</summary>Look at the map, buildings and harbour.</details> <details><summary>German help</summary>Nutze nur die Bild- und Kartenhinweise. Du musst noch nicht jedes Wort verstehen.</details> <details><summary>Solution</summary>Bristol is a city.</details>

Read the short information text

Bristol – a city by the water

Where is it?
Bristol is a city in the south-west of England. It lies on the River Avon. The harbour is close to the city centre.

What can you see?
At the harbour, you can see boats, bridges and old dock buildings. The historic ship SS Great Britain is there, too. Another famous sight is the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

What can you do?
You can walk by the water, visit a museum or look at the city from different viewpoints. A map and the headings help you find information quickly.

Audio and video input

Listen to the place name first. You do not need to copy one special accent. Aim for clear, understandable speech.

Then watch a short part of the official Bristol video guide. Watch once without stopping. Which places from the reading text can you spot?

Listening focus: Catch familiar words and names. You do not need to understand every word.

Vocabulary in context

  1. harbour: an area of water where boats can stop; The harbour is near the city centre.
  2. bridge: a structure that goes over water or a road; The bridge crosses the gorge.
  3. sight: a place people like to visit; The bridge is a famous sight.
  4. museum: a place where you learn from objects and stories; You can visit a museum.
  5. heading: a short title above part of a text; The heading tells you the topic.
  6. visual clue: a picture, map, caption or symbol that helps you understand; The map is a visual clue.

<details><summary>German help</summary>harbour = Hafen, bridge = Brücke, sight = Sehenswürdigkeit, museum = Museum, heading = Zwischenüberschrift, visual clue = visueller Hinweis.</details>

Understand: Find the answer, not every word

Read again. Answer in short English.

  1. Question 1: Where is Bristol?
  2. Question 2: Name two things you can see at the harbour.
  3. Question 3: Which bridge is mentioned?
  4. Question 4: What can headings help you do?

<details><summary>Hint</summary>Use the three headings. Each answer is in one short section.</details> <details><summary>German help</summary>Suche gezielt. Lies nicht jedes Wort neu. Die Zwischenüberschrift zeigt Dir, in welchem Abschnitt die Antwort steht.</details> <details><summary>Example</summary>Question: What can you do? Answer: You can visit a museum.</details> <details><summary>Solution</summary>1: In the south-west of England. 2: Possible answers: boats, bridges, old dock buildings, the SS Great Britain. 3: The Clifton Suspension Bridge. 4: They help you find information quickly.</details>

Notice: How the text helps you

The text has three short headings: Where is it?, What can you see? and What can you do? Before you read a section, the heading tells you what kind of information to expect. The photos and map give extra clues.

Accuracy focus: In a short information text, use simple present forms and useful chunks such as It is ..., You can ... and There is/There are ....

Pronunciation: Clear is the goal

Listen again to Bristol. Then say these chunks slowly and clearly: Bristol, the harbour, the bridge, the city centre, You can visit ...

Tip: Speak in short sense groups. Do not rush. Being understandable is more important than copying an accent.

Speak: A 30-second city tip

Choose one place from the text. Speak for about 30 seconds.

Try English first: Say where it is, what you can see and what you can do.

<details><summary>Hint</summary>Use this order: place → one sight → one activity → your opinion.</details> <details><summary>German help</summary>Du brauchst nur vier kurze, verbundene Sätze. Nutze Wörter aus dem Lesetext.</details> <details><summary>Example</summary>Bristol is in the south-west of England. You can see the harbour and the bridge. You can walk by the water. I think the harbour looks interesting.</details>

Write: Your mini information text

Write four to six sentences about a place you know. It may be a real place or a fictional one. Add one short heading.

Use at least two: There is/There are ..., You can ..., It is ..., I like ... because ...

<details><summary>Hint</summary>Write one sentence about location, two about things to see or do, and one final sentence.</details> <details><summary>German help</summary>Schreibe keinen langen Aufsatz. Vier bis sechs klare Sätze reichen. Prüfe besonders Satzanfang, Punkt und die Form nach "can".</details> <details><summary>Example</summary>A day in Greenford
Greenford is a small fictional town near a river. There is a park next to the old bridge. You can ride a bike or visit the small museum. I like the park because it is quiet.</details>

Optional mediation: Help a German-speaking friend

A friend asks: „Was kann man in Bristol machen?“ Use the English text and answer in two short German sentences. Do not translate the whole text.

<details><summary>Hint</summary>Choose only two useful activities.</details> <details><summary>Example</summary>Man kann am Wasser spazieren und ein Museum besuchen.</details>

Feedback: Check your work

  1. Meaning first: Is my message easy to understand?
  2. Text clues: Did I use a heading or another visual clue?
  3. Language: Did I use short connected sentences?
  4. Accuracy: Did I check capitals, full stops and the verb after can?
  5. Own words: Is the final version really mine?

Use again: One-minute reread

Read the Bristol text one more time. This time, cover the pictures first. After reading, look at the pictures again and say which details they helped you remember.

Can-do check

  1. I can use headings: Yes / almost / not yet.
  2. I can use pictures and maps as clues: Yes / almost / not yet.
  3. I can find key information in a short text: Yes / almost / not yet.
  4. I can give a short spoken city tip: Yes / almost / not yet.
  5. I can write a short information text: Yes / almost / not yet.
