E6 E - Shadow a short dialogue

Mini-description: Speak with a short dialogue. Copy the rhythm, word stress and intonation of the audio model. Clear and understandable English is the goal — not an accent-free voice.

Quick media start

Listen first. Do not read yet. What do you notice: fast or slow, strong words, pauses, and the voice melody?

This Wikimedia Commons audio is a short American-English dialogue and is in the public domain. Use only a short part if the full clip feels too fast.

Try English first → Hint → German help → example → solution. Use the help only when you need it.

Step Help
Try English first Listen once. Catch the situation and two key words.
Hint Listen for the words that sound stronger.
German help Achte auf betonte Schlüsselwörter und die Satzmelodie, nicht auf jedes einzelne Wort.
Example How are YOU? The strong word can carry the main message.
Solution In this example, you is stressed. Copy the stress, then say the whole line naturally.

I can ...

  1. I can understand the main idea of a short dialogue.
  2. I can shadow one short line soon after the speaker.
  3. I can copy rhythm, stress and intonation so that my English is easy to understand.
  4. I can create and perform a short dialogue with a partner.
  5. I can use feedback and try the same line again.

Before you start

Quick check. Say these three lines aloud: Hi! How are you? — I'm fine, thanks. — See you later. If one line feels difficult, mark it as your practice line.

Safety and privacy: Recording is optional. Keep recordings private and local. Do not upload your voice unless your teacher and you have clearly agreed. External AI tools are not needed. If you use AI in another task, check the result and write or speak in your own words.

Notice

Shadowing means: you listen and start speaking very soon after the model. You do not wait for the whole dialogue. First copy short chunks.

Audio model: Frank: Hello, Alice! How are you? Alice: Hello, Frank! I'm good. How are you doing? Frank: I'm doing well, thanks.

Listen again. Notice the strong words and the voice movement. Do not try to copy a person's identity or accent. Copy useful speech features: timing, stress, pauses and intonation.

Understand

Meaning first. Frank and Alice greet each other and ask how the other person is. The words are simple, but the spoken rhythm is important.

Phrase Meaning in this dialogue Useful chunk
How are you? asking how someone is Hi! How are you?
I'm good. saying you are fine I'm good, thanks.
How are you doing? another friendly way to ask And how are you doing?
thanks polite response I'm fine, thanks.

Hint (DE): Verstehe zuerst die Situation. Eine vollständige Übersetzung brauchst Du nicht.

Practise: rhythm, stress and intonation

Round 1 – Echo. Pause after each short line and repeat it.

Round 2 – Shadow. Start just after the speaker. Keep going even if one small word is not perfect.

Round 3 – Meaning. Say the line again without the audio. Keep the same friendly intention.

Use the video only for short practice sections. Stop when your concentration drops. You can always return to the Commons audio above.

Pronunciation focus

Rhythm: Some words are stronger than others. Stress: A strong word is clearer and often a little longer. Intonation: Your voice moves up and down and helps show meaning.

Mini challenge: Say How are you? three times: friendly, surprised, and tired. Keep the words the same, but change the intonation. Which version is easiest to understand?

Use: make your own short dialogue

Create a new dialogue with 4–6 short lines. Use fictional names and a simple school or free-time situation.

Example: Mia: Hi, Sam. Are you ready? Sam: Almost. I can't find my notebook. Mia: Is it in your bag? Sam: Yes! Thanks. Let's go.

Now change the situation, not only the names. Try a club, a library, a sports break or a meeting point.

Read and retell

Read this short text:

Shadowing is speaking soon after an audio model. You listen for meaning, rhythm, stress and intonation. You do not need to sound exactly like the speaker. Your goal is clear, understandable English.

Close the text. Retell the idea in 2–3 English sentences. Use your own words.

Short writing output

Write a 4–6 line dialogue. Then underline two words that should sound strong when you speak. Add one arrow ↑ or ↓ to show the voice movement in one line.

Hint (DE): Erst Dialog schreiben, dann Sprechweise markieren. Nicht jedes Wort braucht eine Betonungsmarkierung.

Optional mediation

A classmate asks in German: Was soll ich beim Shadowing eigentlich machen? Explain the method in 2–3 simple German sentences. Keep the important idea: listen, speak soon after, copy rhythm/stress/intonation, then use the language yourself.

Feedback

Use short, kind feedback after a partner performance.

Feedback Sentence starter
What worked? I could understand ...
What sounded clear? Your stress on ... was clear.
One next step Try the line again with ...

Do not judge accents. Focus on understanding, rhythm, stress, intonation and communication.

Use again

Take your dialogue and change one thing: place, purpose or mood. Perform it again with less support. Then swap roles.

Can-do check

I can ... Yes Not yet
catch the main idea of a short dialogue □ □
shadow one line without stopping □ □
copy useful stress and intonation □ □
speak a short dialogue with a partner □ □
use feedback and improve one line □ □

If you choose Not yet, repeat one short line, not the whole course.
