Einleitung

Goal: Read a simple chart and compare people, places, animals or activities in clear English sentences.

Look at the picture. What can you compare? Try two short sentences.

Mini example: Cycling is faster than running.

Deutsch-Hilfe nur bei Bedarf: Du vergleichst zwei Dinge. Nutze zum Beispiel faster than, longer than oder more popular than.

The video is from BBC Learning English. Listen for comparison words. You do not need to understand every word.

Say or write one sentence for each pair.

What can you notice?

The cycling route is longer than the running route.
The swimming challenge is shorter than the running route.
Cycling is more popular than running.
The swimming challenge is quicker than the cycling route.

Read carefully

A chart gives you facts. Your sentence must match the chart.

Good: Cycling is more popular than running.

Not good: Cycling is better than running.

Why? Better is an opinion here. The chart only shows votes, time and distance.

Understand: useful language

Comparison words

Basic word	Compare two things	Example

long	longer than	The cycle route is longer than the run.
short	shorter than	The swim is shorter than the run.
high	higher than	Tower A is higher than Tower B.
popular	more popular than	Cycling is more popular than running.
interesting	more interesting than	The blue activity is more interesting than the green activity.

Notice: Short adjectives often use -er. Longer adjectives often use more.

Do not learn a big rule list now. Use the forms you need for communication.

Vocabulary in context

Read the sentence first. Guess the word. Then use the German help only if needed.

distance – The cycling route has a distance of 12 km. Hint: kilometres Deutsch-Hilfe: Strecke / Entfernung

vote – 26 students vote for cycling. Hint: choice Deutsch-Hilfe: Stimme

popular – Many students choose it. Hint: many people like or choose it Deutsch-Hilfe: beliebt

compare – Look at two things and say what is different or similar. Deutsch-Hilfe: vergleichen

Look only at what you can safely see in the image.

Try English first: Make two visual comparisons.

Hint: tall, large

Deutsch-Hilfe: Beschreibe nur Sichtbares. Erfinde keine Messwerte.

Example: The giraffe looks taller than the elephant.

Speaking challenge: Compare the photos. Use looks when you compare from a picture only.

Pronunciation

Clear speech is more important than a perfect accent.

Say these chunks slowly, then naturally:

Tip: Do not stop after the comparative word. Say the chunk together: faster than, longer than.

Speak: compare and explain

Work with a partner.

Student A chooses two rows from the chart. Student B makes a comparison. Then change roles.

Useful pattern:

A: What can you compare? B: The cycling route is longer than the running route. A: How do you know? B: It is 12 km. The running route is 5 km.

Challenge: Add a second sentence with a different fact.

Riverdale Activity Day

The chart shows three activities. The cycling route is longer than the running route, but it also takes more time. The swimming challenge is shorter than both routes. Cycling has more votes than running. Swimming is also more popular than running. For me, the most interesting fact is the difference in distance.

Answer in short English sentences.

Which route is longer: cycling or running?

What does the writer find interesting?

Hint: Scan the text for longer, votes and interesting.

Write: your mini comparison

Write 4–5 connected sentences about the Riverdale chart.

Use:

one sentence with -er than
one sentence with more ... than
one sentence with a number from the chart
one final sentence about what you find interesting

Start help: The chart shows ... / The ... is ... than ... / It has ... / I find ... interesting because ...

Example: The chart shows three activities. Cycling is more popular than running. The cycle route is longer than the running route. It has 26 votes. I find the big distance difference interesting.

Mediation: help a German-speaking friend

Your friend asks: Welche Aktivität ist am beliebtesten und welche Strecke ist am längsten?

Answer in simple English using the chart.

Try English first.

Hint: Find the highest number of votes and the longest distance.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Du sollst die Information sinngemäß übertragen, nicht Wort für Wort übersetzen.

Possible solution: Cycling is the most popular activity, and the cycling route is the longest.
