Mini-Beschreibung: Compare several fictional offers, places or activities. Then give a short recommendation and explain your reasons. You will notice useful phrases, understand short texts and voices, practise them, use them in speaking and writing, get feedback and use them again.

Level: English, Year 6, E-level, Baden-Württemberg. Try English first. German help is there when you need it.

Quick start: Notice

Look at the picture. Choose three activities you can name in English.

Say: “I like … because …” or “I would choose … because …”

Hint: Think about fun, price, weather and who goes with you.

Example: “I would choose the bike tour because I like being outside.”

Before you start

Try these without a dictionary.

1. Which word means “not expensive”: cheap, wet or late?
2. Finish: “I recommend the park because …”
3. Say one comparison: “The museum is … than the boat trip.”

Hint: You may use words such as cheaper, more exciting, quieter or better for rainy weather.

Read the mini-dialogue.

Mia: “We have three choices for Saturday. The park is free, the museum is indoors and the river tour sounds exciting.”

Ben: “The park is cheaper, but rain could be a problem.”

Zara: “I recommend the museum. It costs more, but we can stay there even if it rains.”

Mia: “Good point. For a sunny day, I would choose the park.”

Useful words:

1. choice: one option you can choose
2. recommend: say which option you think is good
3. reason: why you think something
4. cheap / cheaper: not expensive / less expensive

Mini-challenge: Find one word about price, one word about place and one phrase for giving an opinion.

All names, prices and times below are invented for this course.

Understand

Read the three messages.

Speaker A – Leo: “I like being active and I do not want to spend much money. I also enjoy eating outside.”

Speaker B – Amira: “I love science. Rain is likely, so I want a place where we can stay dry.”

Speaker C – Noah: “My cousin is visiting. We want to see something new, but we only have two hours.”

Match each speaker with a suitable offer. More than one answer can be possible if your reason is clear.

Try English first: “For Leo, I recommend … because …”

Hint: Use the table. Look for price, weather, time and interests.

German help: Ordne nicht nur nach einem Stichwort zu. Begründe mit mindestens zwei Informationen.

Example: “For Amira, I recommend the Discovery Museum because she likes science and the weather may be rainy.”

Possible solution: Leo → Green Park Day. Amira → Discovery Museum. Noah → River Mini Tour. Other answers are possible with a good reason.

Notice the language

Read these useful chunks.

1. I recommend ... because ...
2. I think ... is a good choice because ...
3. For this group, I would choose ...
4. ... is cheaper than ...
5. ... is better for a rainy day.
6. We could ...
7. Maybe we should ...
8. That sounds good, but ...

You do not need a long grammar rule. Notice what the phrases do: they help you compare, suggest and give reasons.

Language tip: One clear reason is good. Two connected reasons are even better.

Pronunciation

Say these words slowly, then in a sentence.

1. recommend – stress the last part: recomMEND
2. because – keep the second part clear: beCAUSE
3. cheaper – make the first syllable clear: CHEAPer
4. better – stress the first syllable: BETter

Now say: “I recommend the museum because it is better for a rainy day.”

Speaking goal: Be easy to understand. You do not need to copy one “perfect” accent.

Recording option: Recording your voice is voluntary. If you record, keep it private unless your teacher and you have agreed on safe sharing.

Practise: Build a recommendation

Choose one person.

Case 1: Sam has £5, likes sports and wants to be outside.

Case 2: Ella dislikes rain, loves puzzles and has £10.

Case 3: Tom has little time and wants to show a visitor something interesting.

Build three sentences:

1. “For …, I recommend …”
2. “It is …”
3. “It is a good choice because …”

Hint: Add one comparison if you can.

German help: Wähle ein Angebot und verbinde mindestens zwei Gründe.

Example: “For Ella, I recommend the Discovery Museum. It is indoors. It is a good choice because she likes puzzles and does not want to be outside in the rain.”

Speak: Recommendation challenge

Work with a partner. Student A chooses a person. Student B recommends one offer. Then change roles.

Student A: Ask: “Which option do you recommend?” “Why?” “Is it better than the other choices?”

Student B: Answer freely. Try to use at least three useful chunks.

Extra challenge: Disagree politely: “I see your point, but I would choose … because …”

Feedback: Your partner listens for:

1. one clear recommendation,
2. two useful reasons,
3. one comparison or polite response.

Do not correct every small mistake. First ask: “Was the recommendation easy to understand?”

Read: Three short reviews

Review 1: “Green Park Day was simple but fun. We played games and had a picnic. It is a great choice if the weather is good and you want a low-cost day.”

Review 2: “The Discovery Museum had many hands-on activities. The ticket was not free, but we stayed for three hours. I would recommend it for people who enjoy finding things out.”

Review 3: “The River Mini Tour was short and relaxing. We saw the town from the water and had time for the market. It is useful when you do not have a full day.”

Reading task: Which review talks about money, which about learning and which about limited time?

Transfer: Which review is most useful for one of the three speakers above? Explain your choice in English.

Write: Your short recommendation

Write 60–90 words. Recommend one offer to a fictional group.

Include:

1. the name of your choice,
2. two reasons,
3. one comparison,
4. one possible problem,
5. a final recommendation.

Try English first.

Hint: Use: “I recommend … / First, … / Also, … / However, … / So, …”

German help: Schreibe einen kurzen zusammenhängenden Text. Du brauchst keine komplizierten Sätze. Nutze klare Gründe und passende Verknüpfungen.

Example start: “I recommend the Green Park Day for this group. First, it is free, so …”

Check before you finish: Did you explain why your choice fits the group?

Mediation mini-task

A German-speaking friend says:

“Wir wollen am Samstag etwas zusammen machen. Es soll nicht teuer sein, und zwei von uns möchten draußen aktiv sein.”

Tell an English-speaking visitor the important information in simple English. Do not translate every word.

Possible solution: “They want to do something together on Saturday. It should not be expensive, and two people want an active outdoor activity.”

Feedback and use again

Read your recommendation again after feedback.

Choose one improvement:

1. add a stronger reason,
2. add a useful comparison,
3. replace a repeated word,
4. make one sentence clearer.

Then give your recommendation again in 30 seconds without reading every word.

AI note: If your teacher allows an AI tool, do not enter personal data or upload private recordings. Check every suggestion. Keep only language you understand and rewrite the final recommendation in your own words.

1. Create an offer: Invent a fourth activity with a name, price, time and two features. Keep all personal data fictional.
2. Compare two options: Write 70–90 words comparing two offers and recommend one for a clear target group.
3. Private audio: If you want to, record a private 45-second recommendation and listen once for clarity. Do not upload it unless this has been agreed safely at school.
4. Feedback partner: Exchange texts with a partner. Mark one strong reason and suggest one place where the explanation could be clearer.

Schwer

1. Change the audience: Recommend different offers to a sports fan, a visitor with little time and a group on a rainy day. Explain how your reasons change.
2. One-minute pitch: Give a one-minute presentation without reading a full script. Use notes with key words only.
3. Counterargument: Listen to a partner’s choice, give one polite counterargument and then agree on a final option together.
4. Create a recommendation challenge: Build your own set of three fictional options. Ask classmates to choose for two target groups and justify their decisions.

Lernkontrolle

1. Target-group choice: You receive a new fictional profile with interests, budget and weather. Choose one of three offers and justify your recommendation with at least three relevant details.
2. Change the conditions: Explain how your recommendation changes when the weather, budget or available time changes.
3. Argument quality: Read two recommendations. Explain which reasons are relevant to the target group and which reasons do not help much.
4. Negotiate: In a short partner talk, react to another idea, disagree politely if needed and reach a shared choice.
5. New context: Recommend one of three fictional after-school activities, using the language of the course without copying the model text.
