Einleitung

Challenge: You are the customer or the shop assistant. Can you keep a shopping conversation going for about one minute?

Learning path: Notice → understand → practise → use → feedback → use again.

Rule for help: Try English first → Hint → German help → example → solution.

Important: Clear English is more important than a perfect accent. You do not need to upload recordings. If you record yourself, keep the recording private unless your teacher and you decide otherwise. You do not need external AI tools. If you use AI for ideas, check the result and write the final version in your own words.

Situation: Sam wants to buy a T-shirt. Alex works in the shop.

Sam: Medium, please. How much is it?
Alex: It’s twelve pounds.
Sam: Can I try it on?
Alex: Of course. The fitting room is over there.
Sam: Thanks. ... It fits well. Do you have it in green?
Alex: Let me check. Sorry, not in medium.
Sam: That’s okay. I’ll take the blue one, please.
Alex: Great. Would you like a bag?

Notice: The dialogue works because both speakers ask questions, answer, react politely and continue the conversation.

Grammar in action: Use Can I ...? for a polite request. Use Do you have ...? for a product question. Learn these as useful chunks. You do not need a long grammar rule now.

Practise: Pronunciation and speaking

Goal: Be easy to understand. A German accent is okay.

Say these lines slowly, then naturally:

1. Can I HELP you?
2. What SIZE do you need?
3. How MUCH is it?
4. Do you have it in GREEN?
5. No, THANK you.

Focus: Stress the important word. In a friendly question, let your voice sound interested, not flat.

Your mission: Make a dialogue with at least eight speaker turns.

Your dialogue must include:

1. a greeting
2. a request for an item
3. a follow-up question
4. a price question
5. one small problem
6. a polite reaction
7. a decision
8. a friendly ending

Choose fictional details: product, colour, size and price.

Hint: Use this route: greeting → item → detail → price → problem → reaction → decision → goodbye.

German help: Wenn du stockst, nutze die Reihenfolge und die Satzstarter.
Example: Hello. Can I help you? – Yes, please. I’m looking for ...
Solution model: A correct dialogue can look different from the model above. It is successful when both speakers react to each other and the conversation stays understandable.

Speaking cards

Customer card: You want a black cap. Ask the price. Then ask for blue. The blue cap is not available. React politely and make a new choice.

Shop assistant card: The black cap costs £8. There is no blue cap today. Offer a green cap for £7.

Challenge card: Add one natural follow-up question: Anything else? / What size? / Would you like a bag?

Write

Write a short shopping dialogue with 6–8 lines. Use at least three phrases from the vocabulary table and one polite reaction.

Try English first.

Hint: Start with Hello. Can I help you?

German help: Schreibe keinen langen Text. Entscheidend sind Wechsel zwischen beiden Sprechern und passende Reaktionen.
