Introduction
Qualitative Research Methods help you investigate how people understand, experience, describe, and give meaning to the world around them. Instead of reducing every question to numbers, qualitative researchers often work with words, conversations, observations, documents, images, audio, and video. They ask questions such as: How do students experience examination stress? Why do people feel that a public space is welcoming or unwelcoming? How do members of a community describe a social change? What meanings do people attach to a new technology?
Qualitative research is used in Sociology, Psychology, Education, Anthropology, History, Media studies, health research, business, design, and many other fields. It is especially useful when your goal is to understand perspectives, processes, experiences, relationships, language, or culture in depth.

The image above shows field notes. Field notes are a reminder that qualitative research depends on careful documentation. Good research is not simply "talking to people" or "writing down impressions." It requires a clear question, a justified research design, ethical conduct, systematic data collection, transparent analysis, and thoughtful interpretation.
Qualitative and quantitative research answer different kinds of questions. Quantitative approaches usually emphasize measurement, variables, numerical patterns, and statistical analysis. Qualitative approaches usually emphasize meaning, context, language, experience, and interpretation. Mixed methods research deliberately combines qualitative and quantitative approaches when both are needed.
By the end of this aiMOOC, you should be able to explain major qualitative approaches, design an age-appropriate small research project, create an interview or observation plan, distinguish sampling strategies, code a short dataset, develop themes, reflect on researcher influence, evaluate ethical risks, and judge the quality of qualitative evidence.
What Makes Research Qualitative?
Qualitative research is not defined only by the fact that it uses words. A transcript can be counted numerically, and a survey can contain open-ended questions. What makes a study qualitative is the way the research problem, data, and interpretation are connected.
Qualitative researchers commonly aim to understand meaning in context. They may investigate how people interpret an experience, how social interactions develop, how a group creates shared norms, or how language shapes a situation. The researcher usually studies a smaller number of cases in greater depth than would be typical in a large statistical survey.
Several characteristics are common, although not every qualitative study uses all of them. The research question is usually open rather than narrowly predictive. Data collection may be flexible so that new insights can be explored. Analysis usually involves interpretation rather than only calculation. Context matters because an action or statement may have a different meaning in a different place, relationship, or culture. The researcher's decisions are also part of the research process and should therefore be made visible through reflexivity.
A qualitative project can still be rigorous. "Qualitative" does not mean unstructured, unscientific, or based only on opinion. Strong qualitative research makes its reasoning traceable: readers should be able to understand how participants or materials were selected, how data were gathered, how codes and themes were developed, and how conclusions connect to evidence.
From Topic to Research Question
A broad topic is not yet a research question. "Social media" is a topic. "How do students in upper secondary school describe the influence of class group chats on their sense of belonging?" is a qualitative research question.
Strong qualitative questions often begin with how, what, or in what ways. They invite description and interpretation rather than a yes-or-no answer. A useful question should also be focused enough that you can realistically collect and analyze data.
Before collecting data, ask yourself several design questions. What phenomenon do you want to understand? Whose perspective is relevant? In what setting does the phenomenon occur? What kind of evidence could answer the question? What ethical risks could arise? What can you realistically do within your time and access limits?
A research question also influences the method. If you want to understand individual experiences in depth, an interview may be appropriate. If you want to examine interaction and disagreement within a group, a focus group may be useful. If you want to study behavior and routines in a setting, observation may fit better. If you want to study stories, posts, school documents, advertisements, or speeches, qualitative document or media analysis may be more suitable.
Major Qualitative Approaches
Different qualitative traditions make different assumptions about what counts as useful knowledge. You do not need to master every tradition before starting a school-level project, but you should understand that "qualitative research" is a family of approaches rather than one single recipe.
Ethnography studies cultural practices, social settings, and everyday life, often through sustained observation and participation. The researcher pays attention to routines, language, relationships, objects, spaces, and the meanings participants give them.
Phenomenology investigates lived experience. A phenomenological study might explore what it is like to move to a new school, prepare for a major performance, or learn in a multilingual classroom.
Grounded theory develops conceptual explanations from systematically collected and compared data. Rather than beginning with a fully fixed theory, the researcher develops categories and relationships through analysis.
Narrative research studies stories and how people use them to make sense of identity, events, and change. The sequence, structure, language, and context of a story may all matter.
Case study research investigates a bounded case in depth, such as one school project, one organization, one event, or one community initiative. A case study may combine interviews, observations, documents, and other sources.
Action research links investigation with practical change. Teachers, students, professionals, or community members may study a problem, try an intervention, observe what happens, reflect, and revise their practice.
These approaches can overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Your research question should guide the choice.
Sampling and Selecting Participants
In qualitative research, the goal is often not to create a statistically representative sample of an entire population. Instead, researchers usually select people, situations, or documents because they can provide relevant and information-rich perspectives.
Purposive sampling means selecting participants because they meet criteria connected to the question. For example, a study about the transition into upper secondary school might invite students who recently experienced that transition.
Maximum-variation sampling deliberately seeks different perspectives, such as students from different grade levels, study programs, or school roles, when those differences matter to the question.
Snowball sampling asks participants or contacts to suggest other possible participants. It can help when a population is difficult to reach, but it can also reproduce existing social networks and therefore limit diversity.
Convenience sampling uses people who are easy to access. It is common in small school projects, but you should be honest about its limitations because the easiest participants may not provide a broad range of perspectives.
There is no single correct qualitative sample size for every project. The number depends on the research purpose, the method, the diversity of participants, the depth of data, and the analytic approach. A school project should usually prioritize a manageable dataset that you can analyze carefully rather than collecting more material than you can responsibly handle.
Interviews
Qualitative interviews are structured conversations designed to explore participants' perspectives in depth. They usually use open-ended questions and follow-up prompts.

A structured interview uses the same fixed questions in the same order. A semi-structured interview uses an interview guide but allows the interviewer to ask follow-up questions or change the order when appropriate. An unstructured interview is more conversational and flexible, although it still has a research purpose.
For Grades 11–13, the semi-structured interview is often the most useful model because it balances preparation with flexibility. A good interview guide moves from easy, descriptive questions toward deeper questions. Avoid leading questions such as "Why is online learning stressful?" because they assume the answer. A more open question is "How would you describe your experience of online learning?"
Useful follow-up prompts include "Can you give an example?", "What happened next?", "How did you interpret that?", and "Was your experience always like that?" The aim is not to argue with the participant or prove a hypothesis. The interviewer listens, asks for clarification, notices uncertainty, and creates space for the participant's own meaning.
Recording an interview can improve accuracy, but only when participants have clearly agreed to it. If recording is not permitted, detailed notes may be used instead. In school research, you should follow teacher and institutional rules and avoid collecting sensitive personal information.

Focus Groups
A focus group is a moderated group discussion organized around a research topic. Its special value is not simply that several people answer questions at once. The interaction between participants is itself data: people may agree, challenge one another, add examples, change their minds, or reveal different meanings.

The moderator introduces the topic, explains discussion rules, invites quieter participants to contribute, prevents one person from dominating, and asks follow-up questions. A focus group works best when participants can speak freely and when the topic is suitable for group discussion.
Focus groups create ethical challenges. Participants can promise to respect one another's privacy, but the researcher cannot guarantee that every participant will keep everything confidential afterward. For this reason, highly sensitive or private topics are often unsuitable for a school focus group.
Observation and Ethnographic Fieldwork
Observation helps you study behavior, interaction, space, routines, and material objects directly rather than relying only on what people say about them. In non-participant observation, the researcher mainly observes. In participant observation, the researcher takes part in some activities while also observing them.

Observation requires a clear focus. You might record where people sit, how turn-taking happens in group work, what objects are used, how a public space is organized, or how people respond to a change in routine. Field notes should distinguish as clearly as possible between what you observed and how you interpreted it.
A useful field-note structure contains factual description, exact phrases when possible, contextual information, and a separate section for reflections and questions. Memory changes quickly, so notes should be expanded soon after observation.
Observation is not ethically neutral. Public visibility does not automatically mean that every observation is appropriate to record or publish. Your project must consider privacy, reasonable expectations, consent rules, and the vulnerability of the people involved.
Documents, Images, Audio, and Digital Data
Qualitative researchers can study existing materials instead of creating new interviews. Examples include diaries, school policies, speeches, news reports, advertisements, websites, photographs, videos, discussion posts, or public documents.
The research question determines what counts as data. If you study how environmental responsibility is represented in school publicity, you might analyze wording, images, recurring ideas, and what is left unsaid. If you study public comments online, you still need to consider ethical questions about context, privacy, platform expectations, and quotation.
Never assume that "available online" means "free to use without ethical thought." For school projects, prefer public, non-sensitive materials and avoid identifying ordinary individuals unnecessarily.
Preparing Data for Analysis
Raw data rarely arrive ready for interpretation. Interview recordings may need transcription. Handwritten field notes may need typing and expansion. Documents may need to be organized and labeled. Images or videos may need a clear system for describing relevant features.
A transcript is a written representation of spoken interaction. A simple school transcript may record words and important pauses, while more specialized research may also record timing, overlap, intonation, laughter, or gesture. The amount of detail should fit the research question.
Give each data source a non-identifying label when possible, such as Participant A or Interview 2. Store consent information separately from research data. Remove unnecessary names and personal details from working copies.
Good organization is part of rigor. Keep a research log that records when data were collected, what changes you made to the design, what analytic decisions you made, and why.
Coding Qualitative Data
Coding means assigning short labels to segments of data that seem relevant to your research question. A code is not automatically a theme. It is a tool for organizing and interpreting meaning.
Suppose a student says, "I like group work when everyone has a clear role, but I get frustrated when one person does everything." Possible codes might include clear roles support teamwork, unequal participation, and frustration with group imbalance.
Coding can be more inductive, where codes are developed mainly from the data, or more deductive, where codes are guided by existing concepts or a prior framework. Many real projects combine both.

Researchers often revise codes as they learn more. Two similar codes may be merged, one broad code may be split, or a code may be renamed to capture meaning more precisely. This is not necessarily a flaw. Iteration is part of many qualitative analytic processes.
From Codes to Themes
A theme is a meaningful pattern that helps answer the research question. A good theme is more than a topic label. "Technology" is a topic. "Technology expands participation but also increases pressure to be constantly available" is closer to an interpretive theme because it makes a claim about patterned meaning.
Thematic analysis is a widely used approach for identifying and interpreting patterns across qualitative data. A commonly taught reflexive process associated with Virginia Braun and Victoria Clarke involves familiarizing yourself with the data, coding, developing candidate themes, reviewing and refining themes, defining and naming themes, and writing the analysis. These phases are not always strictly linear; researchers may move back and forth.
When developing themes, ask: What central idea connects these coded extracts? How does this pattern answer the research question? What evidence supports it? Are there important exceptions? Does the theme explain something, or does it merely summarize a topic?
A strong analysis combines evidence and interpretation. Short quotations can show the reader what participants said, but quotations do not analyze themselves. You must explain why the quotation matters and how it connects to the broader pattern.
Interpretation, Reflexivity, and Researcher Position
Qualitative researchers make choices at every stage: what question to ask, whom to invite, what to notice, which follow-up question to ask, how to code a passage, and which interpretation to emphasize. Reflexivity means examining how these choices, assumptions, experiences, and social positions may influence the research.
Reflexivity is not the same as trying to become completely neutral. Instead, it asks you to be transparent and thoughtful about your role. A student researching school life is also part of a school environment. That insider knowledge may help the student understand context, but it may also make some assumptions seem so normal that they go unnoticed.
A reflexive note might say: "I expected students to describe group work mainly in terms of fairness. During coding, I noticed that several participants focused instead on friendship and embarrassment. I therefore revised my coding framework so those meanings were not forced into my original expectation."
This kind of record helps readers understand how the analysis developed.
Ethics in Qualitative Research
Research ethics protects participants and supports trustworthy knowledge. Core principles include respect, informed consent, voluntary participation, privacy, minimizing harm, and responsible handling of data.
Informed consent means that people understand what the study involves before agreeing. They should know the purpose, what they will be asked to do, how their data will be used, whether recording will occur, and whether they can stop participating.
Confidentiality means the researcher protects information from inappropriate disclosure. Anonymity means that a person's identity is not known or cannot reasonably be connected to the data. These are different concepts, and true anonymity is not always possible in interview research.
When participants are minors, additional rules may apply, including parent or guardian permission and the young person's own assent. School projects must follow local law, school policy, teacher supervision, and any required ethics procedures.
Avoid high-risk topics for classroom research. Do not pressure classmates to discuss trauma, health conditions, illegal behavior, sexuality, family conflict, or other sensitive personal matters. A strong school project can investigate everyday experiences without collecting intimate data.
Data security is also ethical practice. Store files only where your school permits, restrict access, remove unnecessary identifiers, and delete recordings when the agreed retention period ends.
Quality and Trustworthiness
Qualitative quality is judged by whether the study is well designed, ethically conducted, transparent, evidence-based, and convincing for its purpose. Researchers use different quality frameworks, so there is no single checklist that fits every qualitative tradition.
Common ideas include credibility, meaning that interpretations are well supported by the data and context; transferability, meaning that enough contextual detail is provided for readers to judge whether findings may be relevant elsewhere; dependability, meaning that the research process is documented and coherent; and confirmability, meaning that claims can be traced to evidence and analytic reasoning rather than hidden assumptions alone.
Other strategies include comparing multiple sources, looking deliberately for disconfirming cases, keeping an audit trail of analytic decisions, discussing interpretations with peers, and providing rich contextual description. Some projects use participant feedback, although this is not a universal requirement and participants may interpret data differently from researchers.
Do not confuse rigor with mechanical rule-following. A method is rigorous when its choices make sense for the research question and are explained clearly.
Comparing Methods
An interview is useful when individual depth matters. A focus group is useful when interaction and shared discussion matter. Observation is useful when behavior, setting, and routine matter. Document analysis is useful when existing texts or media are the evidence. A case study may combine several of these methods.
No method is automatically best. Every method makes some things visible and leaves other things less visible. Interviews reveal what people choose and are able to say in an interview situation. Observation shows behavior in a setting but cannot directly reveal every participant's thoughts. Focus groups reveal interaction but may discourage unpopular opinions. Documents preserve existing communication but may not explain how audiences interpreted it.
Method choice should therefore follow the research question, not personal preference.
A Small Classroom Research Cycle
For a supervised Grades 11–13 project, a manageable qualitative cycle might look like this:
- Research question: Choose a focused, low-risk question about an everyday experience, setting, or public text.
- Research ethics: Decide what consent, privacy, data protection, and teacher approval are required before collecting anything.
- Sampling: Select a small, justified set of participants or materials that can address the question.
- Data collection: Use one suitable method such as a short semi-structured interview, observation, or document analysis.
- Qualitative coding: Read or review the data closely and create a clear set of relevant codes.
- Thematic analysis: Group and refine codes into patterns that answer the question.
- Reflexivity: Record how your own expectations and decisions influenced the process.
- Research report: Present the question, method, evidence, analysis, limitations, and ethical safeguards.
This cycle is not a universal formula. Its purpose is to make a school project manageable, transparent, and safe.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
A weak qualitative project often begins with a question that is too broad, collects more data than can be analyzed, asks leading interview questions, confuses description with analysis, treats a few quotations as proof of a universal claim, ignores contradictory evidence, or hides the researcher's own decisions.
Another mistake is overgeneralization. If you interview six students at one school, you should not conclude that "all teenagers think..." Your findings can still be valuable, but they describe and interpret a particular set of experiences in a particular context.
A final mistake is treating ethics as paperwork completed before the "real" research begins. Ethical decisions continue during recruitment, interviewing, observation, analysis, quotation, storage, and publication.
