Introduction
Music Theory and Analysis helps you understand how music is organized and how musical choices create structure, contrast, tension, direction, and meaning. This aiMOOC is designed for Grades 11–13 and moves from secure foundations in musical notation to advanced analytical thinking. You will work with pitch, rhythm, meter, intervals, scales, harmony, voice leading, cadence, musical form, texture, timbre, and evidence-based interpretation.
Analysis is not simply naming chords. A strong analysis begins with a question, gathers musical evidence, notices patterns and exceptions, and explains how details contribute to a larger effect. You should therefore combine score reading with active listening whenever possible. Some music is best explained through tonal harmony; other music may require attention to modes, riffs, groove, texture, timbre, production, or changing formal processes.

Foundations: Notation, Pitch, Rhythm, and Meter
Written notation represents musical events across time. On a staff, vertical position indicates pitch while horizontal placement and note values help represent duration. Clefs establish reference pitches; key signatures indicate recurring sharps or flats; time signatures organize beats into recurring metric groups. Dynamics, articulation, tempo markings, phrasing marks, and expressive instructions add information that cannot be reduced to pitch and rhythm alone.

When analyzing rhythm, distinguish pulse, meter, rhythm, and tempo. Pulse is the recurring beat you can track. Meter groups pulses into patterns of stronger and weaker beats. Rhythm describes the durations and attacks of actual musical events. Tempo is the rate of the beat. Syncopation shifts emphasis toward normally weaker metric positions, while hemiola temporarily suggests a different grouping of the same underlying pulses.

A useful analytical question is: What creates forward motion? The answer might involve harmonic change, but it may also involve acceleration of rhythmic activity, syncopation, silence, a change of register, or a shift in texture. In groove-based music, repeated rhythmic layers can define form even when the harmony changes very little.
Pitch Space and the Keyboard
Pitch is perceived as the relative highness or lowness of a sound. In twelve-tone equal temperament, the octave is divided into twelve equal semitones. Pitch names repeat by octave, and enharmonic spellings such as C-sharp and D-flat may refer to the same piano key while having different notational and harmonic meanings.

When you analyze notation, spelling matters. For example, G-sharp to A is a minor second by letter name, while A-flat to A-natural is an augmented unison. The sounding distance may be equivalent in equal temperament, but the notation communicates different scale and harmonic functions.
Intervals, Scales, Modes, and the Harmonic Series
An interval measures the distance between two pitches. In tonal music, intervals are named by number and quality, such as major third, perfect fifth, or diminished seventh. Melodic intervals occur successively; harmonic intervals occur simultaneously. Consonance and dissonance are not fixed emotional labels: their treatment depends on style, tuning, register, timbre, and musical context.
The harmonic series is a sequence of partial frequencies at whole-number multiples of a fundamental frequency. It helps explain why octave and fifth relationships are acoustically prominent, although musical tuning systems and harmonic languages are cultural systems rather than simple copies of acoustics.

A scale is an ordered pitch collection. Major and minor scales are central to common-practice tonality, but modal collections such as Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, and Mixolydian are important in early music, folk traditions, jazz, rock, film music, and contemporary composition. The analytical goal is not to force every piece into major or minor. First identify the pitch center and the recurring pitch collection, then test whether functional tonal behavior is actually present.
Keys and the Circle of Fifths
A key combines a tonal center with characteristic pitch relationships and harmonic tendencies. The circle of fifths organizes major and minor key signatures so that closely related keys are adjacent. Moving clockwise through major keys adds sharps; moving counterclockwise adds flats. Relative major and minor keys share a key signature but have different tonal centers.

Use the circle of fifths as a map, not as a rulebook. It can help you predict closely related modulations, compare key signatures, and understand common root motion. A composer can also deliberately move to distant keys to create surprise, expansion, or instability.
Chords, Roman Numerals, and Harmonic Function
A chord is a collection of pitches heard or understood as a unit. Triads are commonly built by stacking thirds and may be major, minor, diminished, or augmented. Seventh chords add another third above the triad. In tonal analysis, inversion matters because the bass strongly influences stability, voice leading, and cadential effect.
Roman numeral analysis labels chords by their scale-degree roots in relation to a key. Uppercase and lowercase conventions often distinguish major and minor quality, while additional symbols can indicate diminished chords, inversions, sevenths, tonicizations, and chromatic alterations. Conventions vary between textbooks, so an analyst should state the system being used when ambiguity is possible.

Harmonic Function
In functional tonality, chords are often grouped by their tendency within a phrase. Tonic function creates or confirms a sense of home. Predominant function moves away from tonic and prepares dominant. Dominant function creates directed tension that commonly resolves toward tonic. A common model is tonic → predominant → dominant → tonic.
The same Roman numeral can behave differently depending on context. For example, a ii chord often has predominant function, but a chord label by itself does not prove function. Look at what precedes it, what follows it, where it occurs in the phrase, and how its voices move.

Cadences and Harmonic Closure
A cadence is a phrase-ending event defined by harmony, melody, meter, and timing. Common tonal categories include authentic, half, plagal, and deceptive cadences. A perfect authentic cadence normally combines dominant-to-tonic root motion with both chords in root position and the tonic in the highest voice at the final chord. Other authentic cadences may sound less final.

Do not label a cadence from two chord symbols alone. Ask whether the event actually closes a phrase, whether the final harmony arrives in a metrically strong place, and whether the melody supports closure. A V–I progression in the middle of an uninterrupted phrase may be harmonic motion without cadential function.
Voice Leading and Counterpoint
Voice leading describes how individual musical lines move from one harmony to the next. In tonal writing, efficient voice leading often retains common tones, moves other voices by step, and treats tendency tones carefully. The leading tone usually resolves upward to tonic in strongly cadential contexts, and a chordal seventh often resolves downward by step.
Counterpoint focuses on the interaction of simultaneous independent lines. Contrapuntal analysis asks not only which vertical chords appear, but also how motives, imitations, suspensions, sequences, and linear motions shape the music. In polyphonic music, a purely chord-by-chord description can miss the central process.
A useful practice is to reduce a dense passage to its essential outer voices. The bass often reveals harmonic direction, while the soprano or upper line may reveal goal pitches, melodic closure, and long-range connections.
Motive, Melody, Phrase, and Musical Form
A motive is a short, recognizable musical idea that can be repeated, varied, fragmented, transposed, inverted, expanded, or compressed. A phrase is a perceptible musical unit that often contains a goal, such as a cadence. Analysts frequently examine how small motives create larger phrase structures.
Common phrase types include periods, sentences, and hybrids. A period typically balances an opening phrase with a responsive phrase, often moving from a weaker cadence to a stronger one. A sentence typically presents a basic idea, repeats or restates it, and then accelerates or fragments material toward a cadence.
Form operates at several levels. Small forms include binary and ternary structures; larger forms include rondo, variation forms, and sonata form. Popular music may use verse–chorus, pre-chorus, bridge, drop, refrain, loop, or through-composed designs. Formal labels are useful only when supported by audible evidence such as thematic return, harmonic arrival, texture, lyrics, orchestration, or production change.
Sonata Form as a Tonal Process
Sonata form is a flexible large-scale design common in Classical and later instrumental music. Its broad model includes an exposition, development, and recapitulation. The exposition establishes thematic material and usually moves from the tonic to a contrasting key area. The development destabilizes or transforms earlier material. The recapitulation returns major thematic material with the tonal conflict resolved toward the tonic.

A sophisticated analysis should avoid treating sonata form as a rigid template. Ask how the actual movement confirms, delays, compresses, expands, or contradicts expected formal functions. Tonal motion and cadential goals are often as important as thematic labels.
Texture, Timbre, Register, and Dynamics
Harmony and form are only part of musical structure. Texture describes how musical layers relate: monophonic, homophonic, polyphonic, heterophonic, or combinations that change over time. Timbre is the perceived sound quality that distinguishes instruments, voices, articulations, and production techniques. Register concerns the relative high or low placement of sounds, and dynamics concern loudness and intensity.
In orchestral analysis, a theme can change meaning when transferred from solo woodwind to full brass. In electronic music, a filter sweep, bass entry, drum-layer change, or spatial effect may mark a formal boundary more strongly than a chord change. In popular music, production is therefore part of the composition as heard and should be analyzed as musical evidence.
Rhythm, Groove, and Formal Energy
Rhythm can create hierarchy independently of harmony. Repetition can establish expectation; syncopation can displace it; rests can interrupt it; changing subdivision can intensify it. In jazz, funk, hip-hop, electronic dance music, and many global traditions, groove may be generated by the precise interaction of repeating rhythmic layers rather than by a single notated beat pattern.

When you compare sections, track changes in rhythmic density, attack patterns, bass activity, drum patterns, and phrase length. A chorus may feel larger because its register widens and its rhythmic layers thicken, even if the harmonic progression remains unchanged.
Chromaticism, Tonicization, and Modulation
Chromaticism introduces pitches outside the prevailing diatonic collection. A chromatic note can decorate a line, alter a chord, create mixture, intensify dominant function, or signal a shift of tonal center. Tonicization temporarily treats a non-tonic chord as if it were a local tonic, often through a secondary dominant or leading-tone chord. Modulation establishes a new key for a more substantial span.
To distinguish tonicization from modulation, consider duration, cadential confirmation, thematic placement, and whether the new key controls a meaningful section. A single chromatic dominant may suggest a local goal without creating a genuine change of key.
Beyond Functional Tonality
Not all music is best understood through major-minor functional harmony. Modal music may center on a pitch without strong dominant-to-tonic syntax. Blues may combine major and minor inflections in ways that resist simple diatonic classification. Rock can organize harmony through root relations, riffs, pedal tones, and repeated loops. Post-tonal art music may use interval classes, symmetry, pitch-class sets, registral structures, or timbral processes.
The principle is methodological: choose analytical tools that answer a musical question. If Roman numerals clarify a passage, use them. If they obscure the central process, analyze something else. Good analysis explains the piece rather than forcing the piece to illustrate a theory.
A Practical Analysis Workflow
A strong analysis can follow a sequence of listening and score-based passes. First, listen for the overall form without stopping and mark approximate section boundaries. Second, identify meter, tempo, rhythmic character, major motives, and texture. Third, locate tonal centers, cadences, and important harmonic goals. Fourth, examine melody, bass, voice leading, and chromatic events. Fifth, return to the whole piece and ask which observations actually explain its large-scale effect.
Your final analysis should make an argument. Instead of writing “the piece has a deceptive cadence,” explain what the deceptive cadence does: perhaps it delays closure, extends a phrase, prepares a contrasting section, or intensifies a later authentic cadence. Evidence becomes interpretation when you connect a concrete musical event to a larger structural or expressive claim.
Analytical Evidence Checklist
Use timestamps, measure numbers, chord labels, motive descriptions, register changes, texture changes, and cadential points as evidence. Distinguish observation from interpretation. “The bass descends chromatically for four measures” is an observation; “the chromatic descent destabilizes the tonic and prepares the transition” is an interpretation that must be supported by context.
When comparing two performances of the same work, separate compositional features from performance decisions. Tempo, rubato, articulation, balance, tone color, and phrasing may change how the structure is perceived even when the notated score is identical.
