Introduction
A problem is a situation where something needs to change, but the way forward is not yet clear. Problem solving means working toward a goal by understanding what is wrong, thinking of possible solutions, trying one, and learning from what happens. There are many useful problem-solving models. In this course, you will use a simple four-step cycle: Define, Prepare, Try, Reflect.

The flowchart above is a reminder that solving a problem is usually a process, not a single guess. A good problem solver does not need to know the answer immediately. A good problem solver asks useful questions, makes a plan, tests ideas, and improves them.
As you watch, listen for the four parts of the problem-solving process. Think about a real problem from your own life that could fit this cycle.
Why Problem-Solving Steps Matter
Problem-solving steps help you slow down and think clearly. They can be useful in math, science, computer science, English, group work, games, sports, and everyday decisions.
A step-by-step process can help you:
- Understand the real problem: You are less likely to solve the wrong problem.
- Plan before acting: You can compare ideas and notice possible difficulties.
- Test a solution: You learn what works by doing.
- Learn from results: You can improve your next attempt.
- Work with others: You can explain ideas, listen, and combine different strengths.

Working with other people can make problem solving stronger. One person may notice a detail that another person misses. Good teamwork means listening carefully, asking questions, sharing reasons, and treating other people's ideas with respect.
The Four-Step Problem-Solving Cycle
The four steps are connected. After you reflect, you may decide that your solution is good enough. You may also discover that you need to define the problem more clearly, prepare a better plan, or try a different idea. That is why problem solving is often a cycle.

Step 1: Define
Define means making the problem clear before you try to solve it.
Ask questions such as:
- What exactly is happening?: Describe the situation with facts.
- What do I want to change?: State the goal in one clear sentence.
- Who is affected?: Think about people who may be helped or harmed.
- What limits must I follow?: Notice rules, time, materials, safety, and fairness.
- How will I know the problem is solved?: Decide what a successful result should look like.
Example: Your group keeps running out of time during a class project. A weak definition is "Our project is bad." A clearer definition is "Our group has 30 minutes left, three tasks are unfinished, and we need a fair way to divide the work."
When a problem feels too big, break it into smaller parts. This is called decomposition. A smaller problem is often easier to understand and solve.
Step 2: Prepare
Prepare means thinking before acting. First collect the information you need. Then brainstorm several possible solutions.

During brainstorming, try to create several ideas before judging them. A strange idea can sometimes lead to a useful one. After you have options, compare them.
Useful questions include:
- What information or materials do I have?: Use what is available.
- What different strategies could work?: Look for more than one path.
- What might happen if I choose this idea?: Think ahead.
- Which idea best fits the goal and limits?: Choose using reasons, not only feelings.
- What will I do first, next, and last?: Make the next actions clear.
A plan does not have to be perfect. It needs to be sensible enough to test.
Step 3: Try
Try means putting your plan into action. Build, calculate, write, test, ask, measure, or perform the action you planned.
While you try:
- Watch what happens: Notice results instead of only hoping for success.
- Record useful evidence: Write down measurements, mistakes, comments, or other clues.
- Work safely: Follow classroom, home, online, and tool-safety rules.
- Stay patient: A first attempt may not work.
- Change small parts when needed: Do not keep repeating a clearly failing action without thinking.
Trying is not the same as guessing. A good try follows a reasoned plan and gives you information.
Step 4: Reflect
Reflect means checking the result and learning from it.

Ask:
- Did the solution reach the goal?: Compare the result with your success criteria.
- What evidence shows that?: Use observations, measurements, or feedback.
- Why did parts of the plan work or fail?: Look for causes.
- What could be improved?: Name one useful change.
- What can I use next time?: Carry the lesson into a new problem.
Reflection is not only for failed solutions. Even a successful solution can often become safer, faster, fairer, clearer, or easier to use.
A Worked Example
Imagine that the classroom recycling bin is often filled with non-recyclable rubbish.
Define: The class notices that wrong items are being placed in the recycling bin. The goal is to help students sort waste correctly. The solution must be easy to understand and must not block the walkway.
Prepare: The class gathers information about which materials can be recycled. Students brainstorm ideas such as labels, pictures, a short announcement, or moving the bin. They choose to make a picture label and place it above the bin.
Try: The class uses the new label for one school week and records how many wrong items appear each day.
Reflect: Students compare the results with the week before. If mistakes decrease, the label helped. If mistakes stay high, they may need clearer pictures, a better location, or another idea.
This example shows why evidence matters. "I think it worked" is weaker than a result you can observe or measure.
Choosing Fair and Safe Solutions
A solution can work technically and still be a poor choice. Good problem solving also considers people.
Before choosing a solution, ask whether it is:
- Safe: Could someone be hurt?
- Fair: Does one person carry an unfair share of the cost or work?
- Accessible: Can the people who need the solution use it?
- Responsible: Does it waste materials, energy, time, or money?
- Respectful: Does it protect privacy, dignity, and agreed rules?
For social problems, listen before deciding. You may need to understand different feelings and viewpoints.
After watching, think about how calm listening and clear choices can fit the Define, Prepare, Try, Reflect cycle.
Different Models Can Still Connect
Not every book or teacher uses the same number or names of problem-solving steps. Some models use four steps, some use five, and others use more. The important idea is that strong problem solving usually includes understanding the problem, planning, acting, and checking the result.

Helpful Problem-Solving Habits
Ask "why?" carefully. If you only describe the first symptom, you may miss the real cause.
Use evidence. Facts, measurements, examples, and observations make decisions stronger.
Draw the problem. A sketch, diagram, table, timeline, or flowchart can reveal patterns.
Explain your thinking. When you say why you chose a plan, another person can check your reasoning.
Expect revision. Changing your plan after learning something new is not failure. It is part of thoughtful problem solving.
Know when to ask for help. Some problems involve safety, health, bullying, threats, or emergencies. In those situations, problem solving includes telling a trusted adult and following safety rules.
