Introduction

A map is smaller than the real place it shows. Map scale tells you how a distance on the map is connected to the matching distance in the real world. When you understand scale, you can estimate how far it is from one place to another, plan a route, and compare different maps.

Understanding Map Scale


Why Maps Need Scale

Imagine drawing your whole neighbourhood on one sheet of paper. The roads, parks, and buildings cannot be drawn at their real size. They must be reduced. A map scale tells you how much the real world has been reduced.

For example, a scale of 1 cm represents 1 km means that every 1 centimetre you measure on the map stands for 1 kilometre in the real world. If two places are 4 cm apart on that map, they are about 4 km apart in reality.

Map scales have been used for centuries. Older maps often included decorative or simple distance scales so travellers and sailors could compare positions and estimate journeys.


Three Common Ways to Show Scale

A map can show scale in several useful forms.

Ratio scale 1:100,000 One unit on the map stands for 100,000 of the same units in reality.

A ratio such as 1:100,000 uses the same unit on both sides. If you choose centimetres, 1 cm on the map equals 100,000 cm in reality. Since 100,000 cm equals 1 km, this scale also means 1 cm represents 1 km.


Useful Metric Conversions

You often need simple unit conversions when working with map scales.

Measuring Distance on a Map


Straight-Line Distance

For a straight route, place a ruler between the two points and measure the map distance. Then use the scale.

Suppose a map has the scale 1 cm represents 2 km. If two towns are 3.5 cm apart on the map, multiply 3.5 by 2. The real-world distance is 7 km.

A useful rule is:

Real distance = map distance × distance represented by one map unit


Using a Bar Scale

A bar scale can be especially easy to use because it already shows real distances. Measure the distance between two points with a ruler, a strip of paper, or a piece of string. Then place that measured length next to the bar scale.

Look closely at the map above. It includes both a direction marker and a scale bar. These map features help you understand where places are and how far apart they are.

Measuring a Curved Route

Roads, rivers, and walking paths are often curved. A straight ruler may not follow every bend. You can use a piece of string instead.

  1. Place the string along the curved route from start to finish.
  2. Mark the start and end points on the string.
  3. Straighten the string.
  4. Measure its length with a ruler or compare it with the map's bar scale.
  5. Convert the measured map length into the real-world distance.

This gives an estimate. Small bends, thick map lines, and tiny measuring errors can change the result a little.


Working with Ratio Scales


Reading the Denominator

In a ratio scale such as 1:50,000, the second number is called the denominator. It tells you how many real-world units match one map unit.

For a scale of 1:50,000: 1 cm on the map = 50,000 cm in reality = 500 m = 0.5 km.

For a scale of 1:25,000: 1 cm on the map = 25,000 cm in reality = 250 m.

For a scale of 1:200,000: 1 cm on the map = 200,000 cm in reality = 2 km.

Always write the unit in your answer. A number without a unit does not tell the reader whether you mean centimetres, metres, or kilometres.


Large-Scale and Small-Scale Maps

The words large scale and small scale describe the size of the scale fraction, not the physical size of the paper.

A map at 1:10,000 is a larger-scale map than a map at 1:100,000. It usually shows a smaller area with more detail. A map at 1:1,000,000 is a smaller-scale map and usually shows a much larger area with less detail.

Topographic maps use scale together with symbols, place names, and relief information. When you compare two maps, check the scale before deciding which one gives more detail.

Route Planning

Map scale helps people estimate walking, cycling, driving, and hiking distances. If you know a route is about 6 km long, you can compare it with another route, estimate how much time it may take, or decide whether the trip suits your plan.

A map can show straight-line distance between two places, but a real route may be longer because roads and paths bend around hills, rivers, buildings, or other obstacles.


Maps Beyond Earth

Scale is useful wherever people make maps, including maps of other planets. Scientists use scale bars to understand the size of landforms and the distance travelled by robots.

This map shows part of the route travelled by NASA's Curiosity rover on Mars. Its scale bar lets readers compare distances on the image with distances on the Martian surface.


Resizing a Map

Be careful when a printed map has been enlarged or reduced. A written ratio such as 1:50,000 may no longer be correct if the map size changes. A bar scale printed together with the map changes size at the same time, so it can still be useful after proportional resizing.

Common Mistakes and Smart Checks

A good map reader checks the units, the scale, and the reasonableness of the answer. Mixing centimetres with kilometres without converting is a common error. Measuring from the wrong zero mark on a ruler can also change the result.

If your calculation says that two nearby points on a town map are thousands of kilometres apart, check again. If two cities on a country map come out only a few metres apart, the units or conversion are probably wrong.

For curved routes, measure carefully and accept that the result is an estimate. Repeating the measurement is a good way to check your work.
