South America



Introduction

South America is a continent of extraordinary contrasts. It contains the high Andes, the vast Amazon Basin, dry Pacific deserts, fertile grasslands, tropical wetlands, glaciers, islands, megacities, and thousands of communities with distinct languages and traditions. In this aiMOOC, you will investigate how physical geography, history, culture, economics, and environmental change are connected.

The course is designed mainly for learners in lower and upper secondary education, but its inquiry tasks can also be adapted for vocational education or introductory university courses. You will practise geography and social-studies knowledge while developing English skills in describing locations, comparing regions, explaining cause and effect, evaluating sources, and presenting evidence.

The satellite view helps you notice the continent's broad shape, the green Amazonian lowlands, the lighter dry regions, and the mountain chain along the western edge. Before reading further, describe three patterns that you can see and write one question about each pattern.

By the end of the course, you should be able to locate the countries and major physical regions of South America, explain how landforms and climate influence settlement and economic activity, recognize the continent's cultural and linguistic diversity, examine important historical processes, and evaluate strategies for sustainable development.


Orientation: Location, Shape, and Political Map

South America lies mainly in the Southern and Western Hemispheres. The Pacific Ocean borders it to the west, while the Atlantic Ocean lies to the north and east. The Caribbean Sea is northwest of the continent, and the narrow Isthmus of Panama connects South America with North America. The continent stretches from equatorial environments in the north to cool temperate and subpolar environments in the far south.

South America contains twelve sovereign states: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela. French Guiana, on the northeastern mainland, is an overseas department and region of France rather than an independent state.[1]

Physical Geography

South America's physical geography can be understood as a large system. The young Andes rise along the active western edge of the continent. East of them are immense river basins and old uplands. Farther south, broad plains, plateaus, and glaciated landscapes create very different climates and ways of life.


The Andes and the Pacific Margin

The Andes form the dominant mountain system of western South America. They were created by the movement of tectonic plates, especially the subduction of oceanic crust beneath the South American Plate. This active margin explains the region's volcanoes and frequent earthquakes. The Andes also create steep differences in altitude over short horizontal distances, so climates, vegetation, farming, and settlement can change rapidly from valley floors to high plateaus and snow-covered peaks.

The Altiplano is a high plateau in the central Andes, especially in Bolivia and Peru. Communities there have developed farming, herding, architecture, clothing, and transport practices adapted to cold nights, strong sunlight, thin air, and seasonal rainfall. Aconcagua in Argentina is the highest mountain in the Americas.

The Andes act as a major watershed. Many tributaries of the Amazon begin on their eastern slopes, while short rivers descend westward toward the Pacific. Mountains also influence transport: roads, railways, and pipelines must cross steep passes or follow valleys.


The Amazon and Other River Basins

The Amazon River carries more water to the ocean than any other river, and its drainage basin is the largest on Earth.[2] The basin reaches across several countries and connects Andean headwaters, floodplains, forests, wetlands, towns, farms, and the Atlantic coast. Rivers are transport routes, food sources, cultural spaces, and habitats, but they can also spread pollution from mining, industry, and settlements.

Other major drainage systems include the Orinoco in the north and the Paraná-Paraguay system in the south-central part of the continent. The Paraná and Paraguay rivers are linked to the vast Río de la Plata estuary. These waterways support agriculture, cities, hydropower, fisheries, navigation, and internationally shared ecosystems.


Deserts, Grasslands, Wetlands, Waterfalls, and Ice

The Atacama Desert in northern Chile and neighbouring areas is one of the driest non-polar regions on Earth. Its aridity is connected to cool Pacific waters, stable subtropical air, and the rain-shadow effect of the Andes. At the same time, the desert contains salt flats, mineral resources, specialized organisms, Indigenous communities, and major astronomical observatories.

The Pampas are fertile temperate grasslands, especially in Argentina and Uruguay. They have supported large-scale grain production, cattle ranching, cities, and transport networks. The Cerrado is a vast tropical savanna centred in Brazil, while the Gran Chaco is a hot forest and savanna region extending across several countries.

The Pantanal is one of the world's largest tropical wetlands. Seasonal flooding creates habitats for fish, birds, reptiles, and mammals. Farther east, the Iguazu River forms a spectacular system of waterfalls on the border between Argentina and Brazil.

In the far south, Patagonia includes windswept plateaus, steppe, forests, mountains, lakes, fjords, and glaciers in Argentina and Chile. Glaciers store freshwater and preserve evidence of past climates, but they are also sensitive to changing temperatures and precipitation.


Climate and Natural Hazards

South America has equatorial, tropical, arid, Mediterranean, temperate, mountain, and subpolar climates. Latitude matters, but it is not the only influence. Altitude, ocean currents, prevailing winds, distance from the sea, and mountain barriers all help determine local conditions.

The cool Humboldt Current, also called the Peru Current, flows northward along much of the Pacific coast. It supports highly productive marine ecosystems and contributes to cool, dry coastal conditions. On the opposite side of the continent, warm Atlantic waters help supply moisture to eastern regions. The Andes force moist air to rise, producing heavy precipitation on some slopes while creating dry rain shadows elsewhere.

The El Niño–Southern Oscillation can alter rainfall, temperature, fisheries, floods, droughts, and wildfire risk across the continent. Its effects vary by location and event, so responsible analysis must compare local evidence instead of assuming that every region responds in the same way.

Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, floods, droughts, fires, and glacial hazards affect different parts of South America. Risk depends not only on the natural process but also on exposure, building quality, warning systems, poverty, governance, and access to emergency services. You should therefore distinguish a hazard from a disaster: a hazard becomes disastrous when it seriously harms vulnerable people, infrastructure, or ecosystems.


Biodiversity and Ecosystems

South America contains exceptional biological diversity. Tropical forests, cloud forests, savannas, wetlands, deserts, coasts, islands, grasslands, high mountains, and cold southern environments support species that are adapted to very different conditions. Examples include jaguars, spectacled bears, vicuñas, capybaras, giant otters, condors, macaws, anacondas, poison frogs, and countless plant and insect species.

An ecosystem is not just a collection of species. It includes relationships among organisms, water, soil, climate, nutrients, disturbance, and human activity. The Amazon rainforest influences regional water cycling, while Andean ecosystems regulate water supply for communities at lower elevations. Mangroves protect coasts, wetlands store water, and grasslands support both wildlife and farming.

Major pressures include deforestation, habitat fragmentation, mining pollution, infrastructure expansion, invasive species, overfishing, unsustainable hunting, urban growth, and climate change. These problems are connected to global demand for food, minerals, energy, timber, and land. Effective conservation therefore requires action at local, national, regional, and international levels.

Indigenous and tribal territories are important for biodiversity and climate protection. Research summarized by the Food and Agriculture Organization emphasizes the value of secure rights, community governance, and the knowledge of Indigenous and tribal peoples.[3] Conservation should not remove communities from their lands or treat them as obstacles; it should respect rights, consent, livelihoods, and locally grounded knowledge.


People, Languages, and Cultures

South America is culturally diverse because of long Indigenous histories, European colonization, the forced migration of enslaved Africans, later immigration from many world regions, and continuing movement within and beyond the continent. Identities vary by country, region, class, ethnicity, language, religion, generation, and personal experience. Avoid describing the continent as though it had one single culture.


Languages

Spanish is official in most sovereign states, while Portuguese is the official language of Brazil. English is official in Guyana, Dutch in Suriname, and French in French Guiana. Hundreds of Indigenous languages are also spoken. Widely known examples include Quechua, Aymara, Guaraní, Mapudungun, Wayuunaiki, and many Amazonian languages. Several have official or co-official recognition in particular countries or regions.

Language maps simplify reality. A colour may show the most widely used or official language without showing multilingual families, regional varieties, sign languages, migration languages, or endangered languages. When you read a language map, ask what its categories include, what they leave out, and when the data were collected.


Cities and Everyday Life

South America is highly urbanized, and many people live in large metropolitan regions. São Paulo, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Lima, Bogotá, Santiago, and other cities connect national economies to global networks. Cities can offer education, health care, employment, art, transport, and innovation, but they may also reveal sharp inequalities in housing, services, air quality, safety, and access to green space.

Rural communities remain essential. Farmers, fishers, forest communities, pastoralists, miners, tourism workers, and Indigenous peoples manage landscapes and produce food and materials used in cities. Rural and urban areas depend on one another through flows of water, energy, labour, finance, information, and goods.


Music, Food, Festivals, and Sport

South American cultural expressions include samba, tango, cumbia, vallenato, bossa nova, Andean musical traditions, llanera music, Indigenous ceremonial arts, contemporary hip-hop, literature, film, visual art, and dance. Foods reflect local crops, climates, histories, and migrations. Potatoes, maize, cassava, quinoa, beans, cacao, tomatoes, peppers, fruits, seafood, and meats appear in many regional cuisines, but recipes and meanings differ greatly.

Football is widely followed, yet it is only one part of the continent's sporting life. Volleyball, basketball, cycling, athletics, surfing, martial arts, Indigenous games, and local sports also matter. Festivals and sport can strengthen community identity, create employment, and attract tourism, while also raising questions about commercialization, public spending, and inclusion.


Historical Perspectives

Human societies have lived in South America for thousands of years. The continent's pre-colonial history includes many urban, agricultural, maritime, highland, and forest societies. Examples include Caral or Norte Chico, Chavín, Nazca, Moche, Tiwanaku, Wari, Chimú, Muisca, and numerous Amazonian and southern peoples. The Inca Empire became the largest state in the pre-Columbian Americas, but it was only one part of a much longer and more diverse history.

Machu Picchu was built in the fifteenth century in a dramatic Andean environment. UNESCO recognizes the site for both cultural and natural values, and its protection requires careful management of tourism, infrastructure, ecosystems, and archaeological heritage.[4]

From the late fifteenth century onward, European expeditions and empires transformed the continent. Spanish and Portuguese conquest involved warfare, alliances, forced labour, land seizure, religious change, and epidemic disease. Enslaved Africans were transported across the Atlantic, and their descendants shaped every aspect of South American life. Indigenous resistance, survival, adaptation, and cultural continuity were central throughout the colonial period.

Historical maps are evidence, not neutral mirrors. This sixteenth-century European map reflects the geographical knowledge, political interests, artistic conventions, and errors of its time. When analysing it, ask who made it, for whom, with what information, and whose knowledge is absent.

Most South American states gained independence in the early nineteenth century, although paths differed. Independence did not automatically end slavery, inequality, Indigenous dispossession, regional conflict, or foreign economic influence. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, states expanded, borders were contested, export economies grew, migration increased, cities expanded, and societies experienced periods of democracy, dictatorship, reform, revolution, and social movements.

Contemporary South America continues to be shaped by debates about citizenship, inequality, memory, land, race, gender, migration, public services, democracy, and environmental justice. Studying history helps you see why present-day patterns cannot be explained by geography alone.


Economy and Sustainable Development

South American economies produce agricultural goods, manufactured products, services, energy, and minerals. Major activities include farming, ranching, fishing, forestry, tourism, finance, technology, transport, copper and iron mining, lithium extraction, and oil and gas production. The importance of each sector differs sharply among countries and regions.

Natural resources create opportunities but also difficult choices. A mine may generate export income and jobs while affecting water quality, landscapes, health, and Indigenous rights. Large farms may increase production but also contribute to habitat loss or land concentration. Hydroelectric dams may provide low-carbon electricity while flooding ecosystems and changing river communities. Responsible evaluation must compare benefits, costs, risks, and who has the power to decide.

Sustainable development aims to improve human well-being without destroying the environmental systems on which future generations depend. Useful strategies include transparent land-use planning, protected areas, restoration, circular production, renewable energy, efficient public transport, climate-resilient farming, pollution control, fair taxation, responsible tourism, and legal recognition of community and Indigenous rights.

Regional problems cross borders. Smoke, river pollution, wildlife trade, climate change, migration, energy networks, and transport corridors cannot be managed by one country alone. Cooperation is therefore necessary, but it must include accountable institutions and meaningful participation by affected communities.

The Amazon should be studied as a connected social and ecological system rather than as an empty wilderness. It includes cities, farms, rivers, protected areas, Indigenous territories, extractive industries, and international borders. A strong case study might compare forest conservation, cattle ranching, mining, transport infrastructure, community economies, and global commodity demand. Ask whose evidence is used and whose voice is missing.


Case Study: Andean Verticality

In the Andes, altitude creates ecological zones within short distances. Communities may connect high pasture, upland fields, valleys, and lowland forests through trade and seasonal movement. Modern roads, cities, tourism, mining, and climate change interact with long-established knowledge of water, crops, and mountain hazards. A useful investigation compares adaptation strategies at different elevations.


Case Study: Metropolitan Inequality

A metropolitan region can contain global companies, universities, cultural institutions, informal employment, luxury housing, self-built neighbourhoods, industrial zones, and protected natural areas. Analyse how public transport, housing policy, water supply, employment, and environmental risk are distributed. Avoid treating all residents as equally exposed or equally powerful.
