Foundations for school

Connect the literature. Challenge assumptions. Understand function.

Regeneration, aging and scientific reasoning.

Five foundations

  1. Regeneration restores tissue after damage. It is not the same as slowing aging.
  2. Proteins have different roles. Their amount alone does not tell us how active they are.
  3. A model organism helps answer a bounded question. It is not a miniature human.
  4. Association is not causation. Controlled perturbations and countertests help distinguish them.
  5. Science can acknowledge uncertainty and revise claims when new evidence arrives.

Evaluate a claim

“In old mice, intervention X changes a memory test. Therefore X rejuvenates the human brain.”

Task: identify the observation, extrapolation and unsupported conclusion. Propose two additional tests.

Answer guide: the mouse finding is a model result; the human claim adds a hypothesis. Independent replication, functional endpoints and controlled human studies are distinct further steps.
