Foundations for school
Connect the literature. Challenge assumptions. Understand function.
Regeneration, aging and scientific reasoning.
Five foundations
- Regeneration restores tissue after damage. It is not the same as slowing aging.
- Proteins have different roles. Their amount alone does not tell us how active they are.
- A model organism helps answer a bounded question. It is not a miniature human.
- Association is not causation. Controlled perturbations and countertests help distinguish them.
- Science can acknowledge uncertainty and revise claims when new evidence arrives.
Evaluate a claim
“In old mice, intervention X changes a memory test. Therefore X rejuvenates the human brain.”
Task: identify the observation, extrapolation and unsupported conclusion. Propose two additional tests.
Answer guide: the mouse finding is a model result; the human claim adds a hypothesis. Independent replication, functional endpoints and controlled human studies are distinct further steps.
