Writing a Research Paper



Introduction

A research paper is more than a long report. It is a structured piece of academic writing in which you investigate a focused question, gather trustworthy evidence, explain what that evidence means, and show where your information came from. In Grades 9–10, the goal is not to become a professional scholar overnight. The goal is to learn a careful process that helps you think independently, write clearly, and support your ideas responsibly.

A strong research paper usually grows through repeated steps: asking, searching, reading, thinking, drafting, checking, and revising. You may move backward as well as forward. New evidence can make you improve your question, adjust your thesis, or search for a better source.

Learning Goals

By the end of this aiMOOC, you should be able to develop a focused research question, find and evaluate useful sources, take notes without losing source information, write a clear thesis statement, organize evidence, distinguish quotation from paraphrase and summary, cite sources, revise a draft, and explain why academic integrity matters.

You will also practice information literacy: the ability to recognize when you need information, locate it efficiently, judge its quality, and use it ethically.


What Makes a Research Paper Different?

A research paper combines your own thinking with evidence from sources. Your job is not to copy what other people have said or to collect unrelated facts. Your job is to build a meaningful answer to a question.

Some school research papers are mainly explanatory. Others make an argument. In both cases, readers need to understand the central idea, see relevant evidence, and follow your reasoning. A useful paper therefore connects claim, evidence, and explanation. The claim tells readers what you think, the evidence shows what supports that idea, and the explanation makes the connection clear.


The Research Process

Research is usually iterative. That means you repeat and improve parts of the process instead of completing each stage only once. A weak first question can become a strong question after background reading. A promising source can lead you to better keywords. A new piece of evidence can change your thesis.

Step 1: Understand the Assignment

Before searching, read the assignment carefully. Identify the required topic range, length, deadline, number or type of sources, citation style, and any special requirements. If the assignment asks for an argument, your paper needs a debatable central claim. If it asks for explanation, your paper still needs a focused controlling idea.

Turn the assignment into a short checklist in your own words. This prevents a common problem: writing an interesting paper that does not actually answer the assigned task.


Step 2: Choose a Manageable Topic

A topic should be broad enough to find evidence but narrow enough to investigate within the available time and length. "Climate change" is too broad for most school papers. "How urban tree planting can reduce summer heat in a specific city" is more manageable because it limits the place, action, and effect.

Use brief background reading to learn basic vocabulary before choosing your final focus. Background sources can help you discover names, dates, debates, and keywords that point toward stronger sources.


Step 3: Write a Focused Research Question

A useful research question cannot be answered well with a single fact or a simple yes or no. It should invite explanation, comparison, analysis, or argument. Ask whether the question is specific, researchable, significant, and realistic for the assignment.

For example, instead of asking "Is social media bad?", you could ask "How does late-night social media use affect sleep habits among teenagers?" The second question identifies a behavior, an effect, and a group.

Your question may change as you learn more. That is part of responsible research, not a failure.


Step 4: Search Strategically

Turn your research question into a set of keywords. Search engines and library databases usually work better with key concepts than with a full conversational question. Try synonyms and related terms. Use quotation marks only when you need an exact phrase and your search tool supports that feature.

If your question is about urban trees and heat, useful keyword combinations might include "urban trees heat", "tree canopy temperature", "urban heat island vegetation", and the name of the city you are studying.

A school or public library can give you access to books, reference works, newspapers, magazines, and databases that may not appear in ordinary web searches.

Step 5: Evaluate Sources

Do not treat every search result as equally trustworthy. Evaluate who created the source, why it was created, what evidence it uses, when it was published or updated, and whether other reliable sources support its major claims.

Ask questions such as: Who is the author or organization? What expertise do they have? Does the source provide evidence and references? Is the information current enough for this topic? Is the purpose to inform, persuade, entertain, or sell? Are important limitations or competing views acknowledged?

For fast-moving topics, recent information can matter. For historical or literary questions, an older primary source may be exactly what you need. "Newer" does not automatically mean "better"; relevance and reliability depend on the research purpose.

Use lateral reading when possible: leave the page, investigate the author or organization, and compare the claim with independent sources instead of judging only by the page's appearance.


Primary and Secondary Sources

A primary source gives direct evidence from the time, event, person, experiment, or object being studied. Examples can include letters, speeches, photographs, interviews, survey data, laws, artworks, or original scientific reports.

A secondary source analyzes, interprets, or explains primary sources and other evidence. Examples can include scholarly articles, history books, reviews, and well-researched explanatory works.

Neither type is automatically better. The right choice depends on your question. A paper about how a law was written might use the law itself as a primary source and legal or historical analysis as secondary evidence.


Step 6: Take Notes and Track Sources

Record source information as soon as you decide a source may be useful. Keep the author, title, publication information, date, page number when relevant, and stable link or database information together with your notes. This makes citation much easier later.

Separate three kinds of notes clearly: direct quotations, paraphrases, and your own ideas. Put quotation marks around exact copied wording in your notes so that you do not accidentally treat it as your own later.

Effective notes are selective. Record ideas that help answer your research question, not everything that looks interesting.

From Question to Thesis

A thesis statement expresses the central claim or controlling idea of your paper. It should answer the research question clearly enough to guide the paper, but it can remain a working thesis while you are still researching.

For an argumentative paper, a strong thesis usually makes a claim that requires evidence and reasoning. For an explanatory paper, the thesis can state the main interpretation, relationship, or conclusion that the paper will develop.

Avoid a thesis that merely announces the topic. "This paper is about school start times" does not tell readers what you have concluded. A stronger version could state that later start times can improve student sleep and attendance when schools also plan transportation and after-school schedules carefully.


Test Your Thesis

Ask whether your thesis is specific enough for the paper length, supported by the evidence you found, and open to explanation rather than being a simple fact. Then check every major section of your outline: each section should help develop, support, qualify, or challenge the thesis.

A thesis can change during drafting. Revising it to fit stronger evidence is better than forcing evidence to fit a claim you no longer believe.


Organizing the Paper

An outline helps you decide the order in which readers should meet your ideas. A useful structure for many school research papers includes an introduction, several body sections, and a conclusion. Your teacher may require additional parts.

The introduction provides context, narrows the topic, and leads toward the thesis. Each body paragraph or section should have a clear purpose. A topic sentence signals the main point, evidence supports it, and explanation shows why that evidence matters. Transitions help readers follow the relationship between ideas.

The conclusion should do more than repeat the introduction. It can synthesize the main findings, explain why they matter, identify limitations, or point toward a reasonable next question.


Build Paragraphs with Evidence and Reasoning

Evidence does not speak for itself. After a quotation, statistic, example, or paraphrased finding, explain how it supports the paragraph's point and the paper's thesis. This explanation is your reasoning.

A useful check is to highlight every piece of source-based evidence in a draft and then look at the sentences around it. If a paragraph contains evidence but little explanation, add analysis. If it contains only your opinion, add support.


Address Complexity and Counterevidence

Good research writing does not hide evidence that makes the issue more complicated. If a trustworthy source challenges your claim, examine it. You may need to qualify the thesis, distinguish between situations, or explain why one interpretation is more convincing.

This is especially important for topics involving public policy, history, science, or social questions, where evidence may be incomplete or interpreted differently.


Using Sources Responsibly

Responsible research gives readers a clear boundary between your ideas and borrowed material. You should be able to tell whether a sentence is a quotation, a paraphrase, a summary, or your own analysis.

A quotation repeats exact wording and requires quotation marks or another approved quotation format plus a citation. A paraphrase restates a specific passage completely in your own wording and sentence structure while preserving its meaning, and it still requires citation. A summary condenses the main ideas of a larger passage or source and also requires citation when the ideas come from that source.


Avoid Plagiarism

Plagiarism occurs when you present someone else's words, ideas, data, images, or other work as if they were your own without appropriate acknowledgment. Copying and changing only a few words is not an acceptable paraphrase.

Academic integrity also means representing sources accurately. Do not invent quotations, citations, page numbers, data, or sources. Do not cite a source you have not actually checked. If you use an AI tool in a research assignment, follow your teacher's rules and be transparent where required; AI-generated text is not a substitute for verifying evidence in reliable sources.

Cite as You Write

A citation tells readers where borrowed information came from. Most school papers use an in-text or note citation connected to a full entry in a Works Cited, References, or bibliography section.

Citation systems such as MLA, APA, and Chicago use different rules. Follow the style required by your teacher and use a current official or school-approved guide. The purpose is consistent: give enough information for readers to identify the source and understand what material came from it.

Drafting, Revising, and Editing

A first draft is a working version. Focus first on ideas and structure rather than trying to perfect every sentence immediately. Use your outline as a guide, but change it when the draft reveals a better organization.

Revision asks large questions: Does the paper answer the research question? Is the thesis clear? Is the strongest evidence included? Does each paragraph have a purpose? Are different viewpoints handled fairly? Are source ideas explained rather than simply dropped into the paper?

Editing comes after major revision. Check sentence clarity, word choice, grammar, punctuation, formatting, citation consistency, and the accuracy of names, dates, quotations, and page references.


Peer Review

A peer reviewer can show you what a real reader understands and where the draft becomes confusing. Useful feedback is specific. Instead of "This is good," a reviewer might say, "The second paragraph gives evidence, but I do not yet see how it connects to the thesis."

When receiving feedback, ask questions before defending the draft. You remain responsible for the final choices, but patterns in several readers' comments can reveal real problems.

Final Research Paper Checklist

Before submitting, verify that the paper answers the assigned task, states a focused thesis, uses relevant and credible evidence, explains the evidence, distinguishes your ideas from source material, includes all required citations, follows the required citation style, has a complete source list, uses clear paragraphs and transitions, and has been proofread.

Also open each important source one final time. Check that quotations are exact, paraphrases are faithful to the source, cited page numbers are correct when required, and links or publication details identify the right work.
