Urban Growth and Megacities



Introduction

Cities are places where people, buildings, transport systems, businesses, services, cultures, and ideas are concentrated. When cities expand in population or built-up area, we describe this as urban growth. When the share of a country's population living in urban places increases, we describe the process as urbanization. These processes are connected, but they are not identical.

A megacity is commonly defined as an urban area with at least 10 million inhabitants. Megacities can create major opportunities for education, employment, trade, culture, and innovation. They can also face serious challenges involving housing, transport, water, sanitation, air quality, inequality, waste, climate hazards, and the use of land.

This aiMOOC is designed for Grades 9–10. You will learn to read urban data critically, explain causes and consequences, compare cities, and use evidence to propose more sustainable and inclusive urban futures.

The map below shows urban areas with at least 10 million inhabitants in 2025. Look for regional patterns before you read the explanation.


Learning Goals

By the end of the course, you should be able to explain the difference between Urban growth and Urbanization, define a Megacity, identify major causes of city growth, evaluate opportunities and challenges in large urban areas, interpret maps and population data, and propose strategies for sustainable cities.

You will also practise academic English. Useful skills include describing trends, comparing places, explaining cause and effect, evaluating evidence, and using subject vocabulary accurately.


Urban Growth and Urbanization

Urban growth can mean an increase in a city's population, its built-up land area, or both. A city can gain people through migration and natural population increase. Its physical footprint can also expand when new housing, roads, industrial areas, and services are built at the edge of the existing city.

Urbanization is a broader population process. It occurs when a rising share of people live in urban settlements rather than rural settlements. Definitions of "urban" differ between countries, so international comparisons require careful methods.

The map below shows the share of population living in urban areas in 2025 according to the source's definition. Use it to compare regions, but remember that a percentage does not tell you the total number of urban residents.


Why Cities Grow

Several processes can occur at the same time. Rural-to-urban migration can add residents when people move for work, education, safety, family, or services. International migration can also change urban populations. Natural increase occurs when births exceed deaths within the urban population. Boundary change or reclassification can make an urban area larger in official statistics when nearby settlements become physically connected or are counted as part of the city.

Economic change is important. Factories, offices, universities, ports, transport hubs, hospitals, creative industries, and digital services can attract people and investment. This concentration can produce agglomeration economies: benefits that occur when workers, firms, customers, knowledge, and infrastructure are close together.


Reading Urban Data Carefully

A population number is only meaningful if you know what area it measures. A city proper follows an administrative boundary. A built-up urban area follows continuous development. A metropolitan area may include a central city plus surrounding communities linked by commuting and economic relationships. Different definitions can produce very different population totals for the same named city.

The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs introduced a harmonized spatial approach in its World Urbanization Prospects 2025. In that dataset, 33 megacities had at least 10 million inhabitants in 2025, and 19 of them were in Asia. The number is projected to reach 37 by 2050. When you use older videos or textbooks, check their publication date because the number and ranking of megacities change over time.

Megacities

Megacities are important because of their scale, but size alone does not tell you whether a city is prosperous, sustainable, equal, or well planned. Cities with similar populations can have very different densities, transport systems, housing markets, climates, political structures, and histories.

Megacities are not spread evenly across the world. Many are in Asia, and large urban populations are also growing in parts of Africa and Latin America. At the same time, most of the world's cities are much smaller than megacities. This means that studying megacities is useful, but it should not make you ignore small and medium-sized cities.

The skyline of Mumbai illustrates one highly visible part of a megacity: dense development, major infrastructure, and high-value land. A skyline does not show the full city, so you should avoid judging living conditions from one image.

The following video was published in 2017. Use it as a historical source: compare its figures and projections with the 2025 UN data above rather than treating every number in the video as current.


Opportunities in Large Cities

Large cities can connect people to specialized jobs, universities, hospitals, cultural institutions, markets, and public services. Dense networks of firms and workers can support innovation and productivity. Major airports, ports, railways, and digital networks can connect a megacity to national and global flows of people, goods, capital, and information.

Density can also make some services more efficient. When many people live near one another, high-capacity public transport, district energy, shared public spaces, and nearby services can serve large populations. These benefits are not automatic. They depend on investment, planning, affordability, access, and governance.

Urban diversity can support creativity and cultural exchange. However, a city should not be described only through its wealthiest districts or iconic buildings. A fair analysis asks who benefits from urban opportunities, who carries environmental or financial costs, and whose needs are included in decisions.


Challenges of Rapid Urban Growth

Rapid growth can place pressure on housing. If formal housing supply is too limited or too expensive, people may live in overcrowded housing or informal settlements. Informal settlements are not all alike, and residents often build strong communities and local economies. The key geographic questions are access to safe housing, secure tenure, infrastructure, services, and political voice.

Transport can become slow, expensive, and polluting when jobs and housing are far apart or when roads are overloaded. Water and sanitation systems may need to expand faster than city budgets and institutions can manage. Waste collection and treatment can become more difficult as consumption rises. Air pollution can result from transport, industry, construction, and energy use.

Rapid land conversion can also increase urban sprawl, the outward expansion of low-density development. Sprawl can consume farmland and habitats, lengthen journeys, and make infrastructure more expensive to provide.

Climate change adds further risks. Coastal cities may face sea-level rise and storm surge. Hot cities can experience stronger urban heat. Heavy rainfall can cause severe flooding, especially where drainage is limited or natural floodplains have been built over. Risk is often unequal because lower-income households may have fewer resources to avoid hazards or recover after disasters.

Urban Form, Density, and Sprawl

Urban form describes the physical pattern of streets, buildings, land uses, open spaces, and transport routes. A compact city places many activities close together. A sprawling city spreads development across a larger land area. Neither label alone tells you whether a place is pleasant or fair; design quality, housing choice, public space, transport, and access to services matter.

Density can support frequent public transport and short trips, but very high density without enough housing quality, parks, schools, drainage, or public space can create problems. Low-density development can provide more private space, but it often increases travel distances and land consumption. Good planning tries to connect land use with transport and public services.

Sustainable and Resilient Megacities

A sustainable city aims to meet present needs while reducing environmental harm and protecting future options. A resilient city prepares for shocks and stresses, such as floods, heat waves, earthquakes, economic disruption, or infrastructure failure, and can recover while protecting people.

Important strategies include affordable and secure housing, compact mixed-use development, reliable public transport, safe walking and cycling, efficient water and energy systems, waste reduction, green spaces, trees, wetlands, floodable parks, and climate-aware building standards. Urban policy also needs social inclusion: people affected by plans should have meaningful opportunities to participate.

Bus rapid transit can move many passengers using dedicated corridors, efficient stations, and frequent service. Curitiba in Brazil is widely known for the long development of its bus-based public transport system. The image below shows a raised station platform designed for quick, level boarding.


Nature-Based and Climate-Smart Solutions

Green roofs, street trees, parks, restored wetlands, permeable surfaces, and shaded public spaces can help cool neighborhoods, absorb rainwater, support biodiversity, and improve everyday life. These measures work best when they are connected to wider infrastructure and social policies rather than used as decoration.

Technology can support planning through sensors, mapping, open data, and better service management. However, a "smart city" is not automatically sustainable or fair. You should ask who controls the data, who can access the technology, what problem it solves, and whether less expensive non-digital solutions might work better.


Comparing Megacities

A useful comparison does more than list population sizes. Choose the same indicators for each city and ask how they are connected.

Do not assume that every part of a megacity has the same living conditions. Neighborhood-level differences are often large. Use maps, photographs, interviews, statistics, and local reporting together so that one type of evidence does not dominate your conclusion.


Academic English for Urban Geography

In geography, strong explanations connect evidence to a clear claim. Use words such as because, therefore, however, whereas, compared with, and as a result to show relationships.

Useful sentence patterns include: "The map suggests that ..."; "One cause of this pattern is ..."; "A major consequence is ... because ..."; "Compared with City A, City B ..."; "This source is useful because ..., but it is limited by ..."; and "A more sustainable response would be ... because ...".

When you describe a trend, state the direction, scale, and time period. When you evaluate a policy, identify who benefits, who may lose, what evidence supports the policy, and what trade-offs remain.
