Population Structure and Change



Introduction

Population structure describes who makes up a population. Population change describes how the size and composition of that population change over time. These ideas are central to Demography, Human geography, economics, public health, and planning.

This course is designed for Grades 9–10 and assumes basic graph-reading skills. You will learn to read population pyramids, explain changes in fertility and mortality, analyse migration, use the demographic transition model carefully, and connect age structure to schools, jobs, housing, health care, pensions, and sustainable development. You will also learn why demographic projections are useful but are never guaranteed predictions.

The map above shows that people are distributed very unevenly across the world. Population density tells you how many people live in a given area, but density alone does not tell you the age structure, growth rate, or migration history of that population.

Population Structure

A population can be described by several characteristics. For this course, the most important are age structure, sex structure, and spatial distribution. Demographers often divide age into groups such as children, working-age adults, and older people, although the exact age boundaries depend on the dataset and purpose.

A cohort is a group of people who share a characteristic, often an age range or year of birth. Cohorts move upward through age groups over time. A large birth cohort can therefore affect school enrolment first, then labour markets, housing demand, and eventually health and pension systems.

Population structure matters because two places with the same total population can have very different needs. A population with many children may need more schools and future jobs. A population with a large share of older people may need more accessible housing, health services, and long-term care.


Reading a Population Pyramid

A population pyramid is a graph that shows the number or percentage of people in age groups, usually separated into male and female populations. Age groups are arranged vertically, with younger ages near the bottom and older ages near the top.

When you read a population pyramid, look for the following patterns:

  1. Base: A broad base usually indicates many children and often relatively high recent fertility.
  2. Middle: Bulges can show large cohorts, past baby booms, or migration into working ages.
  3. Top: A wider top usually reflects more people surviving to older ages.
  4. Asymmetry: Differences between sides or age groups can reflect mortality, migration, conflict, or other historical events.

Do not assume that every wide base means rapid future growth or that every narrow base means immediate decline. Migration, changing fertility, and the size of adult cohorts can alter future patterns.

The TED-Ed lesson demonstrates how population pyramids can reveal both past events and likely future pressures. After viewing it, try to explain how a large youth cohort might affect a country ten or twenty years later.


Expansive, Stationary, and Constrictive Shapes

Textbooks often describe three broad shapes. An expansive pyramid has a relatively broad base and becomes narrower with age. A stationary shape has more similar widths across many younger and middle age groups. A constrictive shape has a narrower base than some middle age groups.

These shapes are useful starting points, not strict labels. Real populations are affected by changes in births, deaths, and migration, so their pyramids can contain bumps, gaps, and asymmetries.


Population Change

Population size changes through three demographic processes: fertility, mortality, and migration. A simple population balance is:

Population change = births - deaths + immigration - emigration

Natural increase is the difference between births and deaths. If deaths exceed births, the result is natural decrease. Net migration is immigration minus emigration. A country can therefore grow even with natural decrease if net immigration is large enough, or shrink even with natural increase if net emigration is large enough.

The map above illustrates that population growth rates vary strongly between countries. Global averages can hide very different national and regional trends.


Fertility

Fertility refers to actual childbearing in a population. One common measure is the total fertility rate, an estimate of the average number of children a woman would have if current age-specific fertility rates continued through her reproductive years.

Fertility can be influenced by education, health, access to contraception, housing costs, employment, cultural expectations, family policy, age at partnership and parenthood, and individual preferences. No single factor explains fertility change everywhere.

A fertility rate near the so-called replacement level does not make population size instantly stable. Age structure creates population momentum: a large generation entering reproductive ages can produce many births even when each person has fewer children on average.


Mortality and Life Expectancy

Mortality refers to deaths in a population. Mortality patterns depend on age, health conditions, nutrition, sanitation, medical care, safety, conflict, environmental risks, and many other factors.

Life expectancy summarizes the average years a person would live if current age-specific mortality rates continued. Falling mortality, especially falling infant and child mortality, can produce rapid population growth when fertility remains high. Longer survival also changes age structure by increasing the number and share of people reaching older ages.


Migration

Migration is movement that changes a person's usual place of residence. Immigration means moving into a country or area, while emigration means moving out. Migration can be internal, such as movement from rural areas to cities, or international.

Migration can change population structure quickly because migrants are often concentrated in particular age groups. Working-age migration may increase the labour force and change demand for housing, schools, transport, and services. Migration can also affect places of origin through population loss, remittances, family separation, return migration, and changing age structures.

When analysing migration, avoid reducing people to numbers. Demographic data describe patterns, while individual migration decisions may involve work, study, family, safety, environmental pressures, or other reasons.


The Demographic Transition Model

The demographic transition model describes a broad historical shift from high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates. It helps explain why population growth often accelerates and later slows during social and economic change.

A common version of the model has four main stages:

  1. Stage one: Birth rates and death rates are both high, so long-term growth is slow.
  2. Stage two: Death rates fall while birth rates remain high, so natural increase becomes rapid.
  3. Stage three: Birth rates fall, so the rate of natural increase slows.
  4. Stage four: Birth and death rates are both low, so natural increase is small.

Some textbooks add a fifth stage for populations with very low fertility, ageing, and possible natural decrease. The model is a simplification. Countries do not all move through identical stages at identical speeds, and migration, policy, conflict, economic shocks, and cultural differences can produce patterns that the model does not capture well.

The pyramid shapes above help connect changes in birth and death rates with changes in age structure. The demographic transition is therefore not only about total population size; it is also about the changing proportions of children, adults, and older people.

Ageing, Dependency, and the Demographic Dividend

A population ages when older age groups make up a larger share of the total. Population ageing usually results from lower fertility, longer life expectancy, or both.

A common dependency ratio compares the number of younger and older people with the working-age population. A frequently used convention treats ages 0–14 and 65+ as dependent ages and 15–64 as working ages. This is only a statistical approximation: many people under 15 or over 65 are economically active in some way, and many working-age people are not in paid employment.

Changes in age structure can create opportunities as well as challenges. A demographic dividend is the potential for faster economic growth when the working-age share becomes relatively large and people have access to good education, health, decent work, rights, and supportive institutions. The dividend is not automatic.

An ageing population may increase demand for health care, long-term care, accessible infrastructure, and pensions, but it can also bring benefits through longer working lives, experience, volunteering, caregiving, and new forms of consumption and innovation. Good analysis therefore avoids treating any age group only as a burden.


Density, Urbanization, and Spatial Change

Population structure and change also have a spatial dimension. Population density measures people per unit of land area, while urbanization describes the growing share of a population living in urban areas.

High density does not automatically mean overcrowding, and low density does not automatically mean abundant services. Infrastructure, housing, transport, land use, governance, and environmental conditions shape how population density is experienced.

Urban growth can result from natural increase within cities, migration from rural areas, international migration, and the reclassification or expansion of settlements. Rapid urban growth can create opportunities for education, employment, and services, but it can also increase pressure on housing, transport, water, waste systems, and green space if planning does not keep pace.


Population Projections and Data Literacy

A population projection estimates a possible future population using assumptions about fertility, mortality, and migration. A projection is not a prophecy. If assumptions change, projected outcomes change too.

The United Nations World Population Prospects is a major source of demographic estimates and projections. The 2024 revision estimated a world population of about 8.2 billion in 2024 and projected a peak of around 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s, followed by a slight decline to around 10.2 billion by 2100. These figures are projections based on evidence and assumptions, so later revisions may differ.

When you evaluate demographic data, ask: Who produced the data? What year does it describe? Is the figure an estimate or projection? What definitions are used? Are age groups comparable? How large is the uncertainty? Does the graph show absolute numbers, percentages, or rates?

Why Population Structure Matters

Population structure affects decisions in many areas. School planners need to know how many children may enter classrooms. Employers and governments monitor the size and skills of the labour force. Health systems plan for maternal care, childhood health, chronic disease, and ageing. Housing and transport planners examine where people live and how populations move.

Demographic change also raises questions about fairness. Policies can distribute costs and opportunities differently between generations, regions, migrants and non-migrants, and households with different resources. Good demographic reasoning combines statistics with social, economic, geographic, and ethical analysis.

Useful learning products may include annotated graphs, maps, interviews, policy briefs, presentations, videos, spreadsheets, and data-based investigations.

Transfer is shown when you can apply the same reasoning to a new country, city, historical period, or dataset and justify your conclusions with evidence rather than relying on the shape of one graph alone.
