Introduction

Music is made from sounds that are organized in meaningful ways. Three important ideas help you understand how music works: pitch, melody, and harmony.

Pitch tells you how high or low a sound seems. Melody is a sequence of pitches that you can hear as a musical line or tune. Harmony happens when different pitches sound together and support the melody.

You do not need to play an instrument to study these ideas. You can explore them by singing, listening, clapping, using a classroom instrument, or trying a digital music tool. By the end of this aiMOOC, you should be able to describe pitch, follow and create a simple melody, recognize basic harmony, and explain how these three ideas work together.

Pitch: High and Low Sounds


What Is Pitch?

Pitch is the way your ears and brain place a sound from low to high. A tiny bird can make a high-pitched sound. A large drum can make a low-pitched sound. In music, pitch lets us tell one note from another.

Pitch is connected to frequency, which means how many times something vibrates each second. Frequency is measured in hertz, written as Hz. In a simple sound, faster vibration usually produces a higher pitch, while slower vibration produces a lower pitch.

Do not confuse pitch with loudness. A sound can be high and quiet, high and loud, low and quiet, or low and loud. Loudness is connected mainly to the size, or amplitude, of a sound wave. Pitch is connected mainly to frequency.

Look closely at the wave picture. A wave with more cycles packed into the same space has a higher frequency. A taller wave does not automatically mean a higher pitch; it mainly represents greater amplitude.


Vibration and Frequency

Sound begins when something vibrates. A guitar string moves back and forth. Vocal folds in your throat vibrate when you sing. Air inside a flute vibrates. Those vibrations make pressure changes that travel through a material such as air.

In the animation, the wave changes frequency. When the pattern repeats more often in the same amount of time, the frequency is higher.

Try this safely with a ruler:

  1. Place part of a ruler over the edge of a desk and hold it firmly.
  2. Let a long section stick out and gently flick it.
  3. Listen to the pitch.
  4. Shorten the free section and flick it again.
  5. Compare the sounds.

The shorter free section usually vibrates faster and makes a higher pitch. This is similar to what happens when a player shortens a vibrating string on a guitar or violin.


Notes, Pitch Names, and Octaves

In much Western music, pitch names repeat in the pattern A, B, C, D, E, F, G. After G, the letter names begin again. A piano keyboard makes the repeating pattern easy to see.

When one note and another note have frequencies in a 2-to-1 relationship, we hear them as closely related pitches called an octave apart. For example, a note with twice the frequency of another sounds one octave higher. The pitch name repeats even though the exact frequency is different.

A standard reference pitch used by many musicians is A above middle C at 440 Hz, often written A4 = 440 Hz. You do not need to memorize many frequencies in this course. The important idea is that frequency gives a measurable way to describe vibration rate, while pitch is how we perceive highness or lowness.


Melody: A Musical Line


What Is a Melody?

A melody is a sequence of pitches heard as a connected musical line. A melody may move upward, move downward, repeat notes, leap between distant pitches, or combine all of these movements.

Think of melody as a musical sentence. One note alone is only a pitch. Several pitches in an intentional order can form a recognizable musical idea.

A melody also has rhythm. Pitch tells you which notes are high or low, while rhythm tells you when the notes happen and how long they last. Changing the rhythm can make the same pitches feel very different.


Steps, Leaps, and Repeated Notes

When a melody moves to a nearby pitch, we can call the movement a step. When it moves to a pitch that is farther away, we can call the movement a leap. When the same pitch happens again, it is a repeated note.

Many easy-to-sing melodies use mostly steps with a few leaps. This gives the listener both smooth motion and variety.

Try saying these pitch letters aloud as if you were planning a melody: C–D–E–E–G–E–D–C. Ask yourself:

  1. Where does the melody move by step?
  2. Where does it repeat?
  3. Where does it leap?
  4. Does the overall shape rise, fall, or do both?


Scales as Pitch Collections

A scale is an ordered set of pitches. Scales give musicians useful pitch collections for melodies and harmony. One familiar example is the C major scale: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C.

You can think of the scale as a musical ladder. Going from one scale note to the next is like moving one rung at a time. A melody does not have to use every note of a scale, and it can repeat or skip notes.

The picture above shows a simple notated scale pattern. Music notation places notes higher or lower on a staff to show pitch relationships. You do not have to read every symbol yet; notice how the vertical position of the note heads helps show the direction of the melody.


Melodic Shape or Contour

The path of a melody is called its contour. A contour may rise, fall, make an arch, make a valley, or stay around one small area.

You can draw a melody contour without writing music notation. Put a pencil on paper and move the line upward when the melody rises and downward when the melody falls. This is a useful way to show what you hear.

Try it with a short tune you already know. Hum the tune quietly, then draw its contour. Compare your line with a classmate's line. Differences can lead to a useful listening discussion: Which notes sounded highest? Where did the tune change direction?


Harmony: Pitches Sounding Together


What Is Harmony?

Harmony is created when different pitches sound at the same time or when chords move from one to another. A melody can be sung alone, but adding other notes underneath or around it can change its mood and color.

For example, one student may sing a melody while another holds a different pitch that fits with it. A pianist may play a melody with the right hand and chords with the left hand. A choir can sing several different notes at once.

Harmony does not mean that every combination must sound smooth. Some pitch combinations sound stable and settled; others sound tense or unsettled. Composers use both kinds of sound to create movement and expression.


Intervals: Two Pitches Compared

An interval is the distance between two pitches. You can hear pitches one after the other as a melodic interval or at the same time as a harmonic interval.

For Grades 5–6, the most important skill is not naming every interval. Instead, listen for whether two pitches are close together or far apart and whether they create a relaxed or tense sound.


Chords and Triads

A chord is a group of pitches heard together. A common kind of chord is a triad, which has three different pitch classes.

One simple example is the C major triad: C, E, and G.

Play C, E, and G together on a keyboard or digital instrument if one is available. Then play the three notes one at a time. The notes are the same, but the musical effect changes because harmony depends on pitches sounding together.

A scale can provide notes for several different triads.

At this level, focus on the idea that chords can support a melody. You do not need to memorize all the chord names in the picture.


How Melody and Harmony Work Together

Imagine a melody as the main character in a story and harmony as part of the setting. The setting can make the same character feel calm, excited, mysterious, bright, or uncertain.

A note in the melody may belong to the chord sounding at that moment. Sometimes it does not, which can create brief tension before the music moves to a more settled sound.

Listen for these questions:

  1. Can you follow one main melodic line?
  2. Do you hear extra pitches underneath or around it?
  3. Do the background pitches stay the same or change?
  4. Does the harmony sound settled, tense, bright, dark, open, or full?


Putting Pitch, Melody, and Harmony Together

Pitch, melody, and harmony are connected but different.

A composer may begin with a few pitches, arrange them into a melody, and then choose harmony to support that melody. A performer may make the same written melody sound different by changing the instrument, dynamics, tempo, or accompaniment.

Try this three-stage challenge:

  1. Create four to eight melody notes using mostly neighboring pitches.
  2. Change one pitch so the contour has a clear high point.
  3. Add a second line or simultaneous notes in a few places and listen to how the harmony changes the result.


Listening Like a Music Detective

Careful listening is a skill. You can train it by focusing on one musical feature at a time.

First, listen only for pitch direction: Does the sound rise, fall, or repeat? Next, listen for melody: Can you follow one musical line from beginning to end? Finally, listen for harmony: Are other pitches sounding at the same time?

Do not worry if you cannot hear everything at once. Musicians often listen to the same passage several times for different purposes.

A useful listening routine is:

  1. First listen: What do you notice?
  2. Second listen: Follow the melody.
  3. Third listen: Focus on background notes or chords.
  4. Fourth listen: Explain how the harmony changes the feeling of the melody.


Common Misunderstandings

Pitch is not the same as volume. High pitch does not mean loud. Low pitch does not mean quiet.

A melody is not just any group of notes. The notes need an order and rhythm that make them function as a musical line.

Harmony is not the same as melody. Melody usually unfolds as a main line through time. Harmony describes how pitches combine at the same time and how those combinations change.

A chord is not always three notes. Triads are common three-note chords, but other chords can contain more notes. In this course, triads are a useful starting point.

Music theory does not replace listening. Words such as pitch, melody, scale, interval, chord, and harmony help you explain what you hear and create.
