Early Humans and the Stone Age



Introduction

Imagine living without shops, electric lights, metal tools, written books, or roads. For most of human history, people lived in a world like that. They solved problems by observing nature, sharing knowledge, making tools, finding food, caring for one another, and adapting to changing environments.

The Stone Age is a name archaeologists use for long periods of prehistory when stone was an especially important material for tools. People also used wood, bone, antler, plant fibres, hides, shells, and other materials, but many of these decay more easily than stone. Stone tools therefore give archaeologists especially strong evidence about the distant past.

The Stone Age did not begin or end everywhere at the same time. Different communities changed in different ways and at different times. The familiar terms Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic are especially useful for parts of Europe and western Asia, but archaeologists use different period names in other regions.

A hand axe may look simple, but making one takes planning, skill, and knowledge of how stone breaks. A tool like this can help you think about the choices and abilities of its maker.

Learning Goals

By the end of this aiMOOC, you should be able to explain what the Stone Age is, describe how archaeologists learn about early humans, compare hunting-and-gathering with farming, and use evidence to make careful claims about the past.

You will also learn that human evolution is a branching story, not a straight ladder from “simple” to “advanced.” Several kinds of humans existed at the same time, and all people living today belong to one species, Homo sapiens.


How We Know About the Distant Past

There are no written eyewitness reports from most of the Stone Age. Instead, archaeologists study physical evidence such as tools, bones, hearths, food remains, footprints, buildings, burials, art, and changes in soil. Paleoanthropologists combine archaeology with the study of fossils and human evolution.

An artifact is an object made or changed by people. An eco-fact is natural evidence connected with human activity, such as charred seeds or animal bones. A feature is something people made that usually cannot be carried away, such as a hearth, posthole, or wall.

Context matters. A stone point found by itself can tell us something about technology. The same point found beside animal bones, ash, and other tools can tell a much richer story. Archaeologists record exactly where objects are found because location and layers help explain age and use.

Dating methods also help. Relative dating asks which layer or object is older or younger than another. Scientific methods such as radiocarbon dating can estimate the age of once-living materials from more recent parts of prehistory.

Evidence does not always give one certain answer. Archaeologists compare many clues, test ideas, and change explanations when new evidence appears.


Think Like an Archaeologist

Suppose you find a dark patch of soil containing charcoal, cracked stones, and animal bones with cut marks. What might have happened there? Write one possible explanation, then list at least two pieces of evidence that would make your explanation stronger.


Early Humans: A Branching Family Story

Humans did not appear all at once. Our evolutionary history stretches back millions of years and includes many related species. Scientists often use the word hominin for humans and our close extinct relatives after the evolutionary line leading to humans separated from the line leading to chimpanzees.

Homo sapiens, our species, evolved in Africa roughly 300,000 years ago. Other human species lived during parts of the Stone Age too. Homo erectus lived across parts of Africa and Asia for a very long time. Neanderthals lived mainly in Europe and western Asia. Denisovans are known from fossils and genetic evidence in Asia. These groups were not arranged on a simple ladder. Human evolution is better pictured as a tree with many branches.

Neanderthals and Homo sapiens overlapped in time and place, and genetic evidence shows that some groups interbred. This means the history of humans includes contact as well as separation.

This museum reconstruction represents a Neanderthal. A reconstruction is an evidence-based model, not a photograph of a living Neanderthal. Scientists use fossils and other evidence to guide such models, but some details remain uncertain.


Movement and Adaptation

Over many generations, early humans moved into different environments. They faced cold grasslands, forests, coasts, deserts, and mountains. Survival depended on flexible behaviour: finding new foods, making suitable tools, using clothing or shelter, sharing information, and cooperating.

Avoid the idea that one environment produced one fixed “Stone Age lifestyle.” Different communities developed different solutions. Human adaptability is one of the most important themes of prehistory.


Stone Tools and Technology

Stone-tool making is millions of years old. Some of the earliest known stone artifacts are more than three million years old. By at least about 2.6 million years ago, early humans were making recognizable toolkits in several places in Africa.

A toolmaker could strike one stone with another to remove sharp flakes. This process is called knapping. The sharp flakes could cut meat, plants, hides, or wood. Larger shaped tools, including hand axes, could be useful for different cutting and chopping jobs. Later toolkits included carefully prepared points, blades, scrapers, and tools made from bone or antler.

Technology is more than an object. It includes knowledge: where to find good stone, how to strike it safely, how to repair tools, and how to teach another person.


Why Stone Survives

Stone is common in archaeological sites partly because it can last for extremely long periods. Wood, baskets, cords, and hides were also important but often rot away. If we looked only at objects that survive, we might wrongly imagine that Stone Age people used nothing but stone.

This is an important rule for historians: absence of evidence is not always evidence of absence.


Fire, Food, Clothing, and Shelter

Controlled fire changed daily life. Fire could provide heat and light, help cook food, keep some animals away, and create a place where people gathered. Archaeologists look for ash, charcoal, burned bones, and heat-changed stone when they investigate ancient hearths.

Most people in the Paleolithic lived by hunting, gathering, fishing, and collecting. The exact foods depended on the local environment and season. Plants, nuts, roots, fruits, shellfish, fish, birds, and mammals could all be important in different places.

Clothing and shelters helped people live in difficult climates. Archaeological evidence includes needles, hide-working tools, postholes, stone rings, and rare preserved plant materials. Caves were used in some places, but many Stone Age people lived in open-air camps and built shelters.

Art, Symbols, Music, and Meaning

Stone Age people did more than search for food. They made ornaments, used pigments, carved objects, created images, and in some places made musical instruments. These objects show creativity and shared traditions.

This historical illustration reproduces cave art from Altamira in Spain. Cave paintings can show animals, signs, handprints, and other forms. Their exact meanings are often unknown. It is safer to say what the evidence shows before guessing what people believed.

Burials can also offer clues about social life. Some graves contain objects or pigments, while others do not. Archaeologists may study burial position, age, injuries, objects, and surrounding remains. They must be careful: a burial can suggest beliefs or relationships, but it does not give us a complete explanation of a person's thoughts.


A Source-Checking Challenge

Look closely at the Altamira image. Separate your notes into three groups: what you can observe, what you can reasonably infer, and what you cannot know from the image alone. This is a useful method for studying any historical source.


The Three-Part Stone Age Model

In many school courses, especially when studying Europe, the Stone Age is divided into three broad periods. The dates differ by region, so learn the changes as well as the names.

Paleolithic means Old Stone Age. It covers the longest part of the Stone Age. Communities generally depended on hunting, gathering, fishing, and collecting, and many groups moved as resources and seasons changed.

Mesolithic means Middle Stone Age. In parts of Europe it describes the period after the last Ice Age and before farming became established. People used varied environments, and many toolkits included small stone pieces called microliths.

Neolithic means New Stone Age. In many regions this term is connected with farming, herding, settled communities, pottery, and new forms of stone technology. Not every community adopted all of these at once.

The three-part model is useful, but it is not a single worldwide calendar. For example, farming began at different times in Southwest Asia, China, Africa, New Guinea, Mesoamerica, the Andes, and other regions. Different communities also continued hunting and gathering while neighbours farmed.


From Hunting and Gathering to Farming

After the last Ice Age, some communities in several parts of the world gradually began managing and domesticating plants and animals. This process happened independently in more than one region and took many generations.

Farming could make it possible to produce food in one area and support larger settlements. People could store grain, keep animals, and build more permanent homes. New work included tending fields, herding, grinding grain, making pottery, weaving, building, and exchanging goods.

The diagram connects Neolithic farming activities with tools. Treat it as an illustration, not as a picture of one exact village. Real Neolithic communities differed greatly from place to place.

Farming did not simply make every part of life “better.” Settled life could create new opportunities, but it could also bring harder workloads, crowded settlements, disease risks, conflict, and unequal access to resources. Historians compare evidence instead of treating history as an automatic march of progress.


Domestication

Domestication is a long process in which humans influence the reproduction and traits of plants or animals over many generations. Wheat, barley, rice, millet, maize, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and other domesticated species have different histories in different regions.

A domesticated species is not the same as a wild animal that has simply become tame. Domestication changes populations across generations.


Case Study: Skara Brae

Skara Brae is a Neolithic settlement on the Orkney Islands of Scotland. It was occupied roughly between 3100 and 2500 BCE. Its stone-built houses survived unusually well, giving archaeologists a detailed view of Neolithic home life.

The houses include stone features often described as beds, storage spaces, hearths, and dressers. Covered passages connected parts of the settlement. Because wood was scarce in Orkney and stone survives well, the site gives us an unusual picture of a community that used stone for buildings and furniture.

The reconstructed house helps visitors imagine the interior. Remember that a reconstruction combines archaeological evidence with informed choices. Ask which details are directly supported by finds and which might be modern interpretations.


What Skara Brae Can and Cannot Tell Us

Skara Brae can tell us about house plans, hearths, stone furniture, tools, food remains, and the way buildings were arranged. It cannot tell us every person's name, exact thoughts, spoken stories, or the full meaning of every object.

This difference between evidence and interpretation is central to archaeology.


Case Study: Stonehenge

Stonehenge in southern England was built and changed in stages. The first monument at the site was created about 5,000 years ago, and the famous large stone settings were raised around 2500 BCE during the late Neolithic. Work and changes continued for centuries.

Moving and shaping the stones required planning and cooperation. The monument is aligned with the Sun at important points in the year, including the solstices. Archaeologists have also found burial evidence and nearby settlements. Even so, there is no single written explanation from its builders, so some questions about its purposes remain open.
