Drawing the Human Figure



Introduction

Drawing the human figure means learning to observe, simplify, construct, and communicate the body in space. In this Grades 9–10 aiMOOC, you will practice the figure as an artist: first as movement, then as proportion, structure, anatomy, perspective, light, and expression. The goal is not to create one "perfect" body. Real people vary in height, build, age, posture, mobility, and proportion. Artistic proportion systems are measuring tools, not standards of beauty or worth.

You can work with pencils, charcoal, fineliners, digital drawing tools, or a mixture of media. Large paper is useful for gesture drawing because it encourages movement from the shoulder instead of tiny movements from the fingers. A timer helps you change the length and purpose of each study.

Use only school-approved, age-appropriate references. Clothed models, classmates in agreed poses, mannequins, sculptures, sports photographs, and public-domain motion studies can all be effective. Ask permission before drawing or photographing a classmate, respect privacy, and never pressure anyone to model. Teachers should preview external media according to school policy.

Leonardo da Vinci's studies of standing, kneeling, and sitting figures show how artists have long investigated relationships between body parts. Historical systems can sharpen observation, but your drawing should respond to the individual person and pose you actually see.

By the end of the course, you should be able to identify the main action of a pose, compare proportions, build the body from simple three-dimensional forms, use a small set of skeletal and muscular landmarks, handle basic foreshortening, organize light and shadow, and revise a drawing using evidence from observation.


Foundations of Figure Drawing


Gesture: Capture Action Before Detail

A gesture drawing is a rapid study of action, direction, and rhythm. Instead of starting with eyes, fingers, folds, or outlines, you search for the main movement of the whole pose. A useful first mark is often a line of action: a sweeping line that suggests the dominant directional flow through the head, spine, torso, and weight-bearing parts of the pose.

Gesture is not the same as scribbling quickly. A strong gesture simplifies on purpose. Look for the tilt of the shoulders, the tilt of the pelvis, the direction of the limbs, the bend of the spine, and the relationship between the figure and the ground. Ask: Where is the energy going? Which side stretches? Which side compresses? Where is the weight?

A short sequence can train different kinds of attention. In a 20–30 second pose, search for the main action and the largest angles. In a one-minute pose, add the masses of the rib cage and pelvis. In a two-minute pose, connect the limbs with simple volumes and check balance. The time limit is not a race; it forces you to prioritize.

Proportion: Compare Relationships

In figure drawing, proportion means the size relationship between parts. Artists often use the head as a convenient unit when checking a standing figure. Such systems are approximations. They change with the individual, age, viewpoint, pose, and amount of foreshortening. Treat them as questions to test, not formulas to impose.

A practical way to measure is comparative measurement. Hold your pencil at arm's length, keep your elbow straight, align one end with a point on the subject, and mark another point with your thumb. Compare that distance with a second distance. You might compare head height with torso length, shoulder width with hip width, or upper arm length with forearm length. Keep the pencil in the same plane and avoid moving closer or farther between comparisons.

Another useful check is alignment. Imagine vertical and horizontal lines through landmarks. Does the ear sit above the shoulder? Where does the hand fall relative to the thigh? Is one knee higher than the other? These relationships often reveal proportion errors faster than measuring every part separately.

Historical proportion diagrams by artists such as Albrecht Dürer demonstrate the desire to organize the figure through geometry. Compare the diagrams with real people and ask what the systems explain well and what they fail to capture.


Structure: Turn Shapes into Volumes

A flat outline can describe a silhouette, but convincing figure drawing also depends on three-dimensional thinking. Simplify the body into forms you can rotate mentally: a ball or block for the head, an egg or barrel for the rib cage, a box or bowl for the pelvis, cylinders for the limbs, and wedge-like forms for hands and feet.

This construction method is sometimes called mannequinization. Its purpose is not to make the final person look robotic. It gives you a temporary framework for pose, perspective, and proportion. Once the framework works, you can refine it with anatomy, contour changes, clothing, and value.

Use cross-contours to show direction around a form. A curved line wrapping around a cylinder tells you which way the limb turns. The rib cage and pelvis can be thought of as masses with center lines that reveal tilt and rotation. When these center lines point in different directions, the torso can feel twisted rather than flat.


Anatomy for Artists


The Skeleton as an Underlying Framework

You do not need to memorize every bone before you can draw well. For figure drawing, begin with major structural ideas: the skull sits on the spine; the rib cage and pelvis are large masses connected through the spine; the arms attach through the shoulder girdle; the legs connect to the pelvis; and joints create predictable locations for bending and rotation.

Useful skeletal landmarks are places where bone affects the surface clearly. Examples include the clavicles, the top of the sternum, the ridge of the pelvis, the kneecaps, the elbows, the ankle bones, and parts of the wrist. Landmarks help you place joints, compare sides, and understand where forms change direction.

When studying the diagram, do not copy every label into your drawing. Trace the big relationships first: skull to rib cage, rib cage to pelvis, pelvis to knees, and knees to feet. Then locate the shoulder girdle and arms.


Muscles: Learn the Big Surface Groups

Muscles change the visible surface as the body moves. For Grades 9–10 figure drawing, focus on a small set of large groups rather than medical detail. Study the deltoid around the shoulder, pectoral region of the chest, trapezius across the upper back and neck, major abdominal masses, gluteal region, quadriceps at the front of the thigh, hamstrings at the back, and calf muscles below the knee.

A muscle diagram is most useful when you connect it to movement. Raise an arm and notice how the shoulder mass changes. Bend a knee and observe how the thigh and calf relate. Twist the torso and look for stretching on one side and compression on the other. Anatomy should explain the pose; it should not replace observation.

Balance, Weight, and the Standing Figure

A figure feels grounded when the pose shows believable support. Start by locating the feet or other contact points. Then estimate where the body's mass is carried. In a relaxed standing pose, more weight may rest on one leg while the other relaxes. This asymmetrical weight shift is closely related to contrapposto.

The shoulders and pelvis often tilt in different directions in a natural standing pose. The supporting leg tends to feel more structurally direct, while the free leg may bend. Do not turn this into a rigid formula; observe the actual pose.

To test balance, draw a simple vertical line downward from the main mass of the torso. Ask whether it falls plausibly toward the support area. In an action pose, the center of mass can move, but the figure still needs a readable relationship to gravity, momentum, and support.


Space, Perspective, and Foreshortening


Overlap and Depth

A figure occupies space. Overlap is one of the clearest depth cues: when the forearm crosses in front of the torso, the visible interruption tells you which form is nearer. Size change also matters. A hand close to the viewer may appear much larger than the same hand held near the torso.

Keep major forms simple while solving depth. Place the rib cage, pelvis, upper arms, forearms, thighs, and lower legs before refining the contour. Think of each limb as a volume with a direction in space.

Negative space is the shape around and between body parts. Look at the gap between an arm and the torso or the triangular space between the legs. If these spaces are wrong, the pose is often wrong even when individual body parts look detailed.


Foreshortening

Foreshortening happens when a form points partly toward or away from you and therefore appears shorter in the picture plane. The anatomical length has not changed; the projected shape has. This is why an arm aimed toward the viewer may appear compact while the hand looks relatively large.

To draw a foreshortened limb, start with the near and far endpoints, then connect them with a cylinder or tapered box. Add cross-contours to show the turning direction. Use overlap to clarify which section is in front. Compare the apparent length you see rather than forcing the limb to match a memorized proportion.


Light, Value, and Form

Drawing a figure convincingly does not require shading every muscle. Start with a clear separation between light and shadow. Squint at the reference to reduce detail and identify the largest value groups. Ask where the light comes from and which planes turn away from it.

A form shadow appears where a surface turns away from the light. A cast shadow is produced when one form blocks light from reaching another surface. The core shadow, reflected light, and soft transitions can be added later, but the first priority is a readable light family and shadow family.

Use value to support structure. A simple shadow shape across the rib cage can help describe its turning. A darker value beneath the jaw can separate the head from the neck. Avoid outlining every muscle equally; let edges become harder or softer according to form, light, and focus.


Contour, Silhouette, and Clothing

Contour is not a single unchanging line around the body. The visible edge responds to anatomy, overlap, compression, fabric, and perspective. Some edges are sharp because one form overlaps another. Other edges are soft because the surface turns gradually.

The silhouette is the outer shape of the figure. If the silhouette clearly communicates the pose, the drawing can remain readable even before interior detail. Test your sketch by imagining the figure filled with one flat tone. Can you still tell what the person is doing?

Clothing can reveal the body beneath it. Folds often radiate from points of tension such as elbows, knees, shoulders, waistbands, and places where fabric is pulled or compressed. Instead of drawing every wrinkle, choose the folds that explain action and structure.

For school figure drawing, clothing is also a practical way to study pose, proportion, and movement while keeping references age-appropriate and comfortable for everyone.


From Observation to a Finished Study

A longer figure study benefits from a deliberate sequence. Begin with gesture and the placement of the figure on the page. Add the rib cage, pelvis, head, and major limb directions. Check proportion and alignment. Clarify weight and perspective. Add selected anatomical landmarks. Refine the silhouette and overlaps. Finally, organize value, edges, and a limited amount of detail.

Revision is part of drawing. Compare the drawing with the reference from a distance. Turn the page upside down or view it in a mirror to make familiar mistakes easier to see. Ask another learner to describe where the pose feels balanced, stiff, stretched, compressed, or unclear. Use the feedback to make one targeted change rather than redrawing everything at once.

A useful study page contains more than one attempt. Place quick gestures beside a longer drawing, add small notes about proportion or balance, and include one corrected version. This creates evidence of your thinking, not just a final image.


Visual Culture and Representation

Human figures appear in illustration, comics, animation, fashion, games, scientific diagrams, advertising, fine art, and public information. Each field simplifies or emphasizes the body differently. An animator may exaggerate action for readability. A medical illustrator prioritizes anatomical clarity. A fashion illustrator may elongate proportions intentionally. A documentary sketch may focus on observation and context.

When you analyze figure images, ask who made them, for what audience, and for what purpose. Notice whether a work presents a narrow body ideal or represents varied ages, abilities, builds, and identities. You can learn from historical canons of proportion without treating them as universal rules.

Drawing people carries ethical responsibilities. Represent classmates and community members with respect. Avoid mocking, stereotyping, or changing features in ways that demean the subject. If you create or share a photo or video of another person, obtain permission and follow school rules for privacy and publication.


Practice Routine

A focused 25-minute practice session can combine several skills. Spend about five minutes on very short gestures, five minutes on simple rib-cage and pelvis constructions, five minutes checking proportion and negative space, and ten minutes developing one pose with clearer anatomy and value. The exact timing can change; the important idea is to give each exercise a purpose.

Keep a dated sketchbook. After each session, write one sentence about what improved and one question for the next practice. Over several weeks, this record will make progress visible and help you choose specific goals such as "clearer weight shift" or "better foreshortening" instead of the vague goal "draw better."
